So i just started playing dark souls a week ago. The reason being i hated the way you lose experience if you die, i'm a perfectionist in my games so that part really stood out to me and i hated the game for it in the start. So i entered this mentality that souls don't matter if i lose them so i started playin the game fanatically.

Dark souls is probably the best game ever (subjective opinion), i like how the whole game is up to you, where there would be a quick time event in 99% of games dark souls lets you figure it out. It feels like a realistic experience if dungeon crawing is real. Traps everywhere, enemies try to cheese you. The lore is not in your face, it's all up to you and your imagination WHICH IS AWESOME and after watching all the lore videos on youtube i'm just amazed how much subtlety can enhance the game world and experience.

I pretty much breezed through the game (i am kinda good at every game except COD) except smough and ornstein. I am probably on my 40th try on them and in most games i would probably just say fuck it and delete the game but dark souls makes me want to try to beat them just because i want to find out what+s gonna happen next.

THE FREEDOM IN THIS GAME IS AMAZING, usually i hate having lots of freedom because i like to collect everything and multiple branching paths make me rage if i choose the right path so i have to backtrack to the wrong paths and collect everything but dark souls just does this awesomely.

It's like they combined zelda, god of war, diablo and made the best game ever.

Anyways i know im late and im sorry if this shouldn't be posted but the existence of this game just makes me feel so happy and i just had to share my happiness with the escapist.

Dark souls 2 coming soon to PC so i better slay tom and fuckin jerry soon

Sharing happiness? Well that's ...different. Honestly i'm glad you like it. We need as many supporters for these games, so that developpers realise there is a market for it. And to be honest i'm surprised no one tried to make Darksouls clone yet. Out of curiosity , what class did you end up rolling?

Good old Snorlax and Picachu (joke ©Daystar Clarion, all rights reserved), a truly frustrating boss fight. My first moment like that was the Black Knight in Undead Burg. I must have spent 2 hours mucking about trying to best him with a longsword, all mano e mano, until I gave up and just poked him to death with a spear.

I went with wanderer (i really like all kind of curved weapons, katanas, falchions etc), i don't really like the heavy armors so i'm rolling with a dex build. I did some basic research before playing the game, running with a lightning uchigatana level 3 and quelaags furysword and grass crest shield for the stamina regen. I got the dark wood grain ring and im gonna revert my katana back to normal since my friend told me elemental weapons lose scaling and i have 31 dex so a +15 katana probably does more damage then a lightning one.

One question, how good are fist weapons in this game? Later on i would like to dual wield claws and roll with the shadow armor because i like looking like a ninja. And can you parry with a fist weapon?

Second question, i got the gargoyle helm from the belltop gargoyles i'm using it for now but it seems not that good compared to it's weight and i want the fastest rolls possible.

@Berty yes the knights are so frightening in the start but once you "master" (you never truly master anything in dark souls haha) they kinda become easy.

P.S. i haven't put any points in faith and intelligence, is that bad?

Yeah, I recently beat Dark Souls a few weeks ago, so I was late too, but yeah the game is a lot of fun. The game is discussed to death here, though.

pound for pound the thief armour (I think it's referred to as "Black Thief Armour") has excellent defensive properties whilst allowing you to flip around like a boss. Not as good as the Bandit armour, mind.

I think fist weapons let you parry. If I recall rightly the Blacksmith in the Undead Parish sells Cestus so buy a couple of those and have a go, but I don't know whether or not they allow you to riposte or backstab.

EDIT: Faith and intelligence are only really useful, in my opinion, if you want to focus on sorcery or miracles to deal damage. The buffs tend to run out to quickly and take too long to apply to be worth it. Plus there is always Pyromancy which requires neither intelligence nor Faith.

Oh, there will be. Isn't Capcom already working on some dark fantasy game?

As Dark Souls becomes popular, so too shall we have to endure the endless copycats trying to get a slice of the pie.

Yeah Deep Down I believe it was called. There is also the upcoming Lords of the Fallen which is supposedly inspired by Dark Souls, and I think I heard a rumour somewhere that Sony was doing something with the Demon's Souls IP. I wouldn't mind a few Dark Souls copycats so long as they are good.

OT:

Yes, yes it is awesome. I think I've played through it with various character builds about 10 times now.

I have zero faith in whatever Capcom is doing anymore. And I think I heard something similar regarding Demon's Souls, but that just smells like Sony going "Oh hey, we still got the rights to Demon's Souls. Let's quickly make a sequel and bank it on brand recognition."

I'm more interested in what Miyazaki himself is up to. Cause I'm not sure, did he leave From Software, or is he just working on a different game for them? And if he did leave, where the hell is he now?

I was late getting onto the Dark Souls train too. Got it when it released, disliked the difficulty and sold it back. Bought it again last year on XBL for five dollars and loved the crap out of it.

I'm not gonna pretend to know what changed over the year and a half I didn't have it, but I'm just gonna be glad it did.

Playing through Dark Souls 2 now; not as good, but still worth playing.

(Damn you, Iron Keep!)

glad you like it
almost everyone i know stopped playing after they ran into the wall that is O&S, on my first run i only beat them by grinding souls get my int to 44(was playing magic focused) and soul spears are just silly.

however i am somehow completely unhyped for DS2, i know it releases in tow days on PC but for some reason i feel kinda meh about the whole thing now. maybe because i still hope that at some point in the future someone mods the lighting system back in. or at least the "thanks Obama" mod.

Be wary of happiness.

I just hate how DS2 introduced the Soul Memory system since I enjoyed fighting Duke's Dear Freja and wouldn't mind Jolly Co-oping it at will. Unfortunately after you do it 5 or 6 times you price yourself right out of the summon market. I guess I could push through with the soul collecting until I reach someone on NG7 or whatever to start getting summoned again. Oh well.

The original was one of the best games I've played in years once I got my head around the initial confusion of the weapon system. (Had no idea what scaling was)

I am glad you are enjoying the game as much as I did.
By Jove, Escapist can certainly use more joyful topics.

On the subject of Smaug and Big O:
A most general tip I can give about overcoming just about any challenge in this game is this:

When you seem to hit a brick wall in progression - stop to reflect on the situation, your available tools, and surroundings. Having done everything possible in the game, I can attest that EVERY challenge in the game can be overcome with creative/outside of the box thinking. That's one of the greatest things about it - how deviously and thoughtfully all the challenges are set up.
Skill trumps all, but a more cerebral/creative plan can overcome many a thing in DS.

Glad to hear you like it OP! Too many people avoid the game on reputation, a reputation that in my opinion is rather exaggerated. As a warning the game does lose a bit of its momentum after Anor Londo, but its still great overall (with the exception of a certain chaotic boss). If you are having trouble with O&S just remember that you can summon Solaire for that fight, other than that my main advice is to use the columns to separate them out and as cover from attacks. Beating the two of them solo on NG+ is still one of my most memorable experiences in gaming.

On the subject of a Dark Souls clone I did hear a rumor some time ago about the possibility of Sony putting together a Demon's Souls 2, though I haven't heard much on the subject and virtually nothing about it since the initial rumor (which I think I picked up in one of Vaati's videos). Personally if they did make a Demon's Souls 2 I would happily buy it (unless it turned out horrible) and play it and Dark Souls.

Recently beat those two buggers using lightning spear and a +5 fire halberd, Solare helps to if you summon him, his soul sign is on the stairs by the archer in the room prior to the boss fight. The fight is also way easier if you kill the little guy first in my opinion. Though I think you get different loot if you kill the big guy first. I've still not completed the game but I'm on my 3rd character, the first time I got to the two archers on the ledge in Anor Londo I got so stuck ended up going all the way back to Dusk to buy hidden body. Dark souls is definitely one of my favourite games. To Hixy, stuff is everywhere in DS you've just got to explore. It also doesn't really matter what stuff you use once you've practised with it. I would however recommend getting the claymore from the dragon bridge (just suicide run it if you cant kill the dragon, or come back from the church side) its got a fantastic move set and a huge range for a sword.

Can you explain to me exactly what that thing is? I see it referenced here and there, but I don't know what it means. Does it have to do with you level, or literally the number of Souls you currently have? Because it seemed to me that I was able to fight Dragon-killing Spider Thing as many times as I wanted, but eventually I got bored and went and killed her myself and moved on. It is a very fun fight though, and you do get a lot of souls out of it.

I'm currently trying to beat Dark Souls after all these years. Dark Souls II explained the game and how things work so much better than the first game, so now I don't feel completely lost like I did when I tried it so many years ago.

i dont want to sound like a cocky sob but i beat those guys first try, you know if you abuse the pillars its the easiest way to split em up? also summon solaire if you need him, he helps a lot cause hes a boss!
