I was watching the latest episode of Penny Arcade: The Series http://www.penny-arcade.com/patv/pa-the-series/224/
and they were playing Mortal Kombat. They didn't especially seem like they knew what they were doing some of the times and that culminated in the creation of this strip: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2011/4/20/

Now I realise that episode wasn't the best advertisement of the game but I think it looks kind of cool. I've thought for a while that fighting games look kind of cool and I think me and my friends could possibly get into it.

So what do you make of fighting games, Escapist community? Are they satisfying? Do you enjoy them? If so, which are your favourites? I mostly play shooters, RPGs, platformers, that sort of thing. Do you think that kind of taste in Games could accomodate a Fighter?

Sure! Fighters are definitely more multiplayer-oriented - pretty boring by yourself, an awesome game with your friends. Smash bros is of course the classic, but you really can't go wrong with one of the major ones. I'd argue smash is a little better as a party game because it's easier for someone who doesn't know how to play to get into it.

I don't like fighting games. They're nearly always about exploiting the cheapest tactics in the game, and take control away from you too much when you're getting hit.

One of the game series I enjoy most is the Tales of Series. From there, it's not a very big leap to go to something like Super Smash Bros. However, those are probably defined as "brawlers" as opposed to fighting games.

I don't normally like traditional fighting games (Tekken, DoA, etc), but I did actually enjoy the new Mortal Kombat. It's not particularly difficult to pull off special moves and do some pretty effective combos. Part of the issue may be that fighting games are, in my opinion, best played in the company of who you face, anonymous online opponents just doesn't fuel the same competitive drive for improvement in me.

That's odd...those guys played Blazblue. And even did a two strip series no it. They should EASILY be able to get the hang of MK...

Anyway, I like 'em. But only in small doses. I don't have the dedication to keep playing a fighting game for more than 1-2 months.

There's Fatalities and lasers and that's really all you need to know.

(Sub Zero and Scorpion are most likely gonna be my first tattoo)

The comic strip was referring to the end of a fight in MK, when your opponent stands in place waiting for you to "finish him". Makes perfect sense. Actually giggled at the comic too.

MK has pretty much been the only fighter that I've ever been in any way successful at. It's not that I don't like other fighters, I just suck at them.

Are we talking about fighting games in general or just MK? Because since it's original iteration way back in the early 90s the games have played very differently from other fighters.

I usually always suck at fighting games. Never really found one I could commit enough to time to get good at.

Don't hate them, but losing constantly = no fun so I don't play them often.

Oh man... there are so many things wrong with this assertion I dunno where to begin...

But, I won't trip. You don't like them and you probably couldn't care less about what I have to say, so I'll leave it at that.

GG and BlazBlue. I love those series.
Yeah, I've seen those ones reviewed. I like the style of them very much. In my opinion if your series can get away with not being 3D, gorgeous, crisp 2D is the way to go. Just my opinion.

Talking about all Fighters. I'd like to hear any experience from across the genre.

Fixed my post. But to be honest, I haven't played that many, for that reason. A little SSBM and Brawl, Soul Calibur, some of the older MK and Street Fighter.

I don't like Fighting games because they are just a more complicated version to beat-um ups and take away the RPG elements.

I recommend Castle Crashers

It's just the pressure to perform the finishing moves. I remember that feeling when playing the original in the arcades. You got the guy all set up, you know the move, then you fuck something up and let off some weak-ass punch that finishes him off instead of pulling his heart of his chest and dry humping it.

I'm sorry but if you can't pull off fatalities with some real degree of success in MK 2011... It's not a fault of the game.

You just really.

really.

REALLY.

[HEADING=1]SUCK[/HEADING]

[sub]Sorry to those who suck too badly to pull off a single fatality. But seriously, there's even a training mode FOR fatalities. It gives you tips/advice to do it. I mean for the love of Rah, how much do you need the game to hold your hand?[/sub]

I prefer the Soul Calibur series and things like that, but I've been known to dabble in a Fighter or two. Best when you're with friends though.
