The thing is that I always joke about this stuff around people that I know, around people, that are well "sensitive" or just utmost strangers then I talk with a full heart of compassion and limitless love *sprinkles fairy dust*.
For one, me and my friend Chris always joke about how his girlfriend would have to be a necrophiliac to ever want to have sex with him or have a irresistable urge for pavements, because he's flat as a board!
I could play an instrument on his ribs.

There is a line there you have to be careful with of course, I make jokes to my black friend (who we have nicknamed tobi - no joke -) and he never cares. Why? One, it clearly isn't ment to be offensive, Two, he is my friend and me and him joke like that, three, He is proud to be black he is okay with what he is.

these three things are very important. If the joke is even (regardless of intention perceived as being offensive you can cause real harm. Nobody in their right mind makes racist jokes standing in line at the grocery store about the people around them. you don't know them, they don't know how to take what you said. and lastly I can make a joke about Tobi being black because HE IS PROUD TO BE BLACK, now some people do not have that luxury, injured people, handicapped people, physically and mentally - despite my punctuation I do not fall into the latter category XD - are not usually proud of their handicap. Tobi can stand up as a black man and have nothing to be ashamed of whereas people who have no legs, who never got to play sports, never got to drive a normal car or blind people who don't know what "blue" is are not proud of their inability and thus not only is it in poor taste, it is simply cruel and hateful to mock them.

that being said if you share the characteristic it dosn't really matter. I see mexicans crack mexican jokes all the time, blacks crack black jokes all the time, and white people crack nationality jokes because that is about as close to judging race as it gets for white people lol

Well I get where your coming from. For instance, at my lunch table we do some low blows at each other.If some one does a really good one, then the other person just roles with it. Yet when were not together or just passing each other in the hall way we stay clear of that shit. Just depends on who you with. Naw I think you're being to hard on yourself there. My dad is black and native american, my mom is white (Irish if we are being specific). Am I in some way racist cause of my jokes with tobi? do i somewhat resent my father which causes me to make these jokes? No, I find them funny. Do I really think chuck norris is a God? No. Do I really think every black person is gonna steal my car and every mexican is gonna come grab every penny i drop? about as much as i believe every bishop is after my nuts. (To clarify: That is to say I do not believe so lol) people really can throw around racist jokes without any ill will to the race. even more so for people who often come into contact/ are related to/ or used to a race.

of course I don't have a P.H.D. so honestly I could be wrong, but as far as I am concerned racist jokes =/= racist in the slightest bit... IMO

The core element in comedy is absurdity. That's why I love racist, sexist, and fucked up jokes. Because that's what they are; absurd. The problem with racism is legitimate hate. There's no use in stifling lighthearted humor, because that's not present.

I have red hair (although it's not as red as it used to be). I worked out many years ago that not only is it socially acceptable, it's actually expected that people will take the piss out of us gingers.

This got me thinking, if this form of totally unjustified humour is tolerable to everyone, fuck it, I'm gonna take the piss out of anything I feel like. It's open season!

In all seriousness if you truly had no prejudices then you wouldn't feel the need to make this thread and yes jokes can be harmless and funny; but making light of a cripple's inability to walk is very insensitive if they are upset by the fact that they can't.

I'm all for making jokes about friends and family because you know how they feel but yelling a black joke at a black man and howling with laughter doesn't seem like the kind of world I want to live in...it seems like Xbox LIVE.

I find that, once you ease friends into the fact that you can and WILL insult damn near anything for any perceived fault, you can get away with tearing into people for just about anything and get a laugh.

It's the Lewis Black style of comedy that I enjoy. Just progressively say things more insulting until you can get away with saying the worst ideas you think of. If there's anything we need more of in society it's for people to discuss everything openly.

This doesn't mean that I have to necessarily think bigoted or racist thoughts. Rather, it means that I should point out that that lady has a hairy lip the second I notice it. I should point out when somebody does something stupid and I can insinuate why that is in the most demeaning way possible. I expect to be treated harshly in return, I find it refreshing and enjoyable.

Well, Escapists, this is how I know I'm not a bigot.
For one, when I make a joke about handicapped people, then I later on top that with a joke about black gay handicapped people and some even wander why I do these absurd jokes about the worlds most sensitive things.
My reason? Is because I said, "fuck it, I'm going to start tearing everyone a new pair of balls" because I will allow everyone to make a joke about me, if it's about how flamboyant I am,weight or my comical expressions.
So why not eliminate the hate in this world with jokes and gain a bit of laughter as well?

If you need to start a thread to tell everyone how much of a non-bigot you are, you may be dwelling on the topic of race too heavily. Most people don't have a problem with off-color jokes, there is no need to try and justify them as long as you aren't trying to hurt or offend those you direct them towards.

Stephen Hawking doesn't type he can only move a few muscles in his face sensors detect these movements so that he can control his voice-computer thingie...anyway I'm normally the first to declare that equality means that black people aren't allowed to yell 'white boy' at me in the street and that cripples shouldn't call me a 'dirty, filthy biped' because my limbs still function; but there is a HUGE difference between lighthearted jokes with friends and just being nasty.
Case in point you said Haking wouldn't be upset, I'm sure if we go and tease him with witty puns for five minutes he'll cry...but you can still be the bigger man and walk away right?
