When your free trial to Xbox live gold is up if you are a constant gamer like everyday get the 12 month deal. If you only play during the weekends the three month deal is best. Always play the demos before buying or unlocking the full version, and mute the bad kids.

So, in order to save 60 dollars a year (which is next to nothing) you want him to buy a 300 dollar system he has no games for?

I'd say get it now while they have the Halo Reach celebration offer. 40% OFF for 12 month subscription! As for connection type the wireless adaptor is expansive as shit. You'd be better off trading in your old console and buying a slim is you want to go down the wireless route. The other option (which is what I ended up doing) is to run the ethernet cable through the walls from point to point. If you know anyone or can do this yourself then this is the way to go. (or if the price for an electrician to do it is cheaper then the adaptor the do this!)

Don't buy a headset.
What if I want to speak to my mates?
Find alternate means, or be prepared to do a lot of muting.

Xbox Live seems to attract some of the less savory twelve year olds.
Like skype?
The xbox comes with a headset.
The wireless adapter I've had for 2 years. Mind you...I barely played my xbox 360. But it works wonders. Buy the year subscription now before the price goes up

I heard recently that the price for live will be getting higher so if figured I should buy it now while it's not as pricey (even though it should be free but whatever microsoft... you dicks) so do you guys have any suggestions of what I should get. I'm looking into getting a wireless adapter. I already have a wireless router and I'm shit with this stuff so I'm not sure whether I need an adapter or not. I heard wired has a better connection but my xbox is upstairs and we can't get an extention through the house and having it go down the stairs is a stupid idea. It's in my room upstairs and I can't move it downstairs. So I figured I could buy one of those Halo Reach cards that give you 14 months, 2 of them free, for £40. But If I need an adapter it needs to be wireless and a good one is £55. I also worry about putting microsoft points on and how to do it because we arn't in the best financial situation right now. We can afford the Gold and the adapter but I'm not so sure about the points. The second I post this I'm going to continue to look I just want advice from those who have been through it. Before anyone says "just go check out the site," I'm doing that right now I just wonder what you all found the easiest method to be.
I'm not sure I'll be much help for most of this, but the whole Microsoft Points thing is optional really (unless you're planning on buying a lot of stuff in the Marketplace). I had a Live subscription for months before I ever bought any at all. Now I only get them when I really want them for something and can afford it. There's a lot of free stuff out there for download too if you keep your eye out.

As for peripherals like the adapter, buying through a site like ebay or refurbished stuff was about the only way I ever got "official" things at a reasonable price.
