Your kirby facepalm is about all that needs to be said about this series' writing. The first MGS got kinda weird with the possessed hand (Ash with a chainsaw anyone?) and Psychomantis. But as the series went on it just got worse and worse.Weaver said:

Hideo Kojima has to be some kind of insane genius because he made a storyline that puts most anime to shame, is so convoluted that it could break a person's sanity trying to tie everything up neatly and yet is compelling enough to keep us coming back OVER 9 games (more if you include the VR missions which was awesome but had nothing to do with the storyline... I will however "explain" Metal Gear, it is a cool spy action game series, with cool spy action stuff in it, but story wise that is selling it extremely short.
