You know what really works to kill "first"? getting immediately banned for posting it. Eventually people get the hint.

It worked for Zero Punctuation [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation/3540-Hunted-The-Demons-Forge]. heh.

Is that really such a problem to warrant such attention? Spam is spam either way, and as such will e dealt with like trolling and the likes.

I have a much less aggressive way to get rid of "first". We change it so rather than saying it when you are the first person to comment on a video, you say it when you are the first person to have sex with a virgin. The kind of people who actually would say "first" have little to no chance of getting laid, so I doubt we'd ever have to hear 'first" again. There, problem passive aggressively solved.

That may be so, but I could spout ninety-nine words of absolute bull$#^! and finish off with that. For someone such as myself, it's not a problem to say so many words that say nothing at all, even if it all only leads up to me saying one simple word. Not that it matters. I could spend that time going on some pointless rant, or I could spout absolute nonsense in that span of words. The sky's the limit! Hell, I could just save this post and post it every time I was actually first at some topic. At this point, (here) I've already written one hundred words! So hah! First!

And there you go, OP. Someone just tossed themselves in mod wrath's way just to passive-aggressively make a point.
i rather like how WHs post came in at 15th and i can only wonder if that was coincidental or a deliberate shot at all the "first"ers who miss and haven't the decency to edit themselves into their proper place.

They could always take my advice and just do away with the forums altogether. That would definitely reduce the number of low-content posts.

Edit:
It seems whenever I have a totally sweet idea and tell the Escapist about it, it gets shot down by everybody because none of them can take the greatness. And then I have to spend HOURS responding to every little nitpick and variable; most of the time it's just the same three arguments being made over and over again in slightly different words. So, just a little advice, if you come up with something to discredit this awesome idea with, first read through this thread. If you see somebody else already made pretty much the same point as you did, just quote or snip-quote their comment and say "I second that." It'll save me a lot of time.
Erm? Really? Not to put to finer point on it, but if you want to be taken seriously, stop being so damn holier than thou about it. It'll just piss people off after all and if you really want a discussion, that's never a good thing.

My idea which I think would be much simpler than yours? Have "First!" and any variation of said word get picked up by the system and a ban is applied, instantly.

Works out well enough.

The "FIRST!" posters aren't THAT bad.
And honestly, I'd rather have "FIRST!" posters then pretentious asshats who throw a tantrum whenever something contradicts them.

Epic Idea.

People have fun saying first on posts for whatever reason. I don't see any reason why it should be prevented. I've never had the opportunity to do that myself, but I've got to admit it would be tempting.

The only difference your idea would make is they would say First! And then some random stuff to fill in the rest of the words. Which, okay, might not a worthless post. But if all they are going to do is just say First and then filler, it becomes worthless. Giving people temp suspensions or take out the banhammer to people only saying "First" would eventually make people get the hint.

Low content posts are already moddable. Are you talking about literally locking it to prevent fewer than 100 words or so?
How I wish you would have said "First!"
You could have put your actual content in a spoiler with 'First!' as the title.

OT: I think that the escapist does a really good job with weeding out that stupidity. Other sites should just to that.

FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIRST.

But, I've never really seen anything wrong with posting 'First!' Yeah, it's pointless and stupid, but it isn't like it's wasting a lo of time to take the fraction of a second to realize all the guy said was 'First!'

Sorry, but you can't really say "Here is my idea. Here is a problem to my idea. I have no solution to this problem, but I'm confident in saying it is not a problem". It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

Not to mention, acting like a prick just because everyone doesn't immediately take to an idea of yours is not a good way to win people over.

Anyone else notice the irony in the fact the original poster, in a thread suggesting a way to get rid of useless low-content posts, demands people to simply post "I second that" if their point has already been made?

If the community could be so trusted to post 100 useful words as the first comment, then why do we even need this system in the first place?
