Better idea: Only people with more than 20 posts can post until the fifth comment is made.

ayeha, I dont see anyone writing a one WORD post as teh first post, especially not a ZP vid. its not that you cant, I just dont see it.

besides, it wouldnt take too much time to type first and tehn copy and paste it 99 times, or just be ready when it gets posted and just paste first 100 times.

Actually, I dont mind the whoel first thing. I think its always funny to see people just try to be first and then you have four or five just saying first and then realizing their not.

Not that Im condoning it, I just think its funny.

EDIT:

besides, you could say that South park hasnt really been all that great fora few seasons now, and its not JUST trey and matt. They have a crew with them.

So for example, the first comment for a new ZP episode must be at least 100 words long.
Seriously? Most people don't write that much anyway. A way to fix it is to get people to be less egotistical, which, obvious, with the way these forums are, that won't happen (you know, people coming up with what they thing is a great idea and ends up being stupid, like naming your kid after a game, or other things, they say that other people just don't understand it rather than accepting that they disagree or that it is stupid).

Wow. Anyone else think the OP is coming across as a bit of a pretentious twat with the edited bit? And his supposedly well thought out replies to criticism?

Not just me then?

OT: There's no need to implement such a system. People who do this sort of thing immediately get punished for it. They do it enough and they get banned.

Also, never underestimate people's ability to find a way to fuck with your system, regardless of the system. People have already mentioned spamming the word limit, but I'm sure there are other, more irritating ways to avoid it. The current way works fine as it is, with eager-eyed bots waiting as soon as new content pops up.

FIRST! posts aren't that bad. I usually just shake my head at the stupid and pointless posts at this point. Though, I've noticed the mods here don't take too kindly to it. I've seen posts that would actually say something and then post "FIRST" receive mod wrath. So, it looks like any such attempt isn't looked upon positively here.

First Comment, Awesomes! :)
Yet another tiresome attempt to make "FIRST" sound funny so that you don't get deleted...
Fiiiiirs-

Very nice video :)

Also, worth noting that they don't seem to like people posting on videos before watching them. Judging from the mod edits I saw on the ZP videos.

And there you go, OP. Someone just tossed themselves in mod wrath's way just to passive-aggressively make a point.
FIRST off, where ya been? You might not remember me, though we did have at least one decent long conversation, but I remember you. Haven't seen you posting for a while. I had thought that you left the Escapist for a while there.

Anyway, I love that he wasn't even the tenth comment/reply.

I like it. Though 100 words seems like a lot. One can add something pretty substantial in let's say, 40 or 50 words...maybe even 30. There isn't really a direct connection between quantity of words and quantity of information. You could spend 50 words describing an idea, or you can use one word that means that idea.

I have a better idea! Let's just ignore it! Most people who post "FIRST" nowadays are doing it purely to see people get their backs up. Making an entire thread about it is just giving those people what they want.

People have fun saying first on posts for whatever reason. I don't see any reason why it should be prevented. I've never had the opportunity to do that myself, but I've got to admit it would be tempting.
I have never gotten to say "first" either, but like you said it is tempting, and whats the big deal anyway it's silly and harmless. Also to the OP why does something this insignificant bother you anyways?

That took me about three seconds to bang out.
agreed.

sorry OP, nice try, just gotta deal with it.

Wait, so at the core of it your bright idea to counter spam is to add a character limit? How very original....

Yeah, part of me gets the feeling he presented this idea to a moderator, got rejected, and now he is presenting it to us in the hopes we would be like "OMG DUDE! THAT IS AN AWESOME IDEA!" to try and change the moderator's mind. Of course, I have nothing to base that on except for the fact that ideas to improve the website would be best served directly to someone with actual authority to implement them.

Edit:
It seems whenever I have a totally sweet idea and tell the Escapist about it, it gets shot down by everybody because none of them can take the greatness. And then I have to spend HOURS responding to every little nitpick and variable; most of the time it's just the same three arguments being made over and over again in slightly different words. So, just a little advice, if you come up with something to discredit this awesome idea with, first read through this thread. If you see somebody else already made pretty much the same point as you did, just quote or snip-quote their comment and say "I second that." It'll save me a lot of time.
You realize that your little tirade here filled about a hundred people with angry indignation, and they'll go out of their way to annoy you, right?

Trust me, we've ALL had fantastic ideas, but sometimes those "three repeated arguments" are there for a reason... they wreck your idea.

You say "give the Escapist community the credit it deserves", but kind of cross yourself with your edit. Anyways, you find it unimaginable that people would be spammy enough to post the word "FIRST" a hundred times, but check the video threads again. Do you think anyone REALLY cares? I sure don't.

And if constant mod wrath isn't doing the trick, this won't either.
Thanks for saying what was going through my head. I guess all I have to do now is quote you to save him a little time in his precious internet life. After all, he needs to get on the problem of fixing nom'd posts.

[sub]Or he could, you know, just stop replying to people raising the same complaints.[/sub]

Umm, that's really very impractical. 100 word minimum on the first few comments on a ZP video? Let's also talk about how impractical it would be to code that successfully.

The only way to truly, undoubtedly stop "First!" comments once and for all is to, if it's your thread, to post a reply to your own thread. Then, you are technically the first. For official videos, like ZP, MovieBob, etc., have the moderators post a reply first.

Or, more logically, you can just ignore them, let them get an infraction, and carry on with life and stop worrying about something not worth caring about. -_-'

Assuming of course that there isn't a script out there already that can detect repeated words ad nauseam... like MS word has done since Word 03, I would say never to say never, the issue we have is an unwillingness on the side of website administrators on many sites to take this sort of initiative, eliminating the "first" problem requires some degree of effort I concede, but thinking in the long terms, if it requires more effort to make a "first!" post than simply typing that word, and maybe ctrl+C/ctrl+V ing a few times then such people will eventually go away, because, lets face it, the sort of people that make "FIRST!!!!" posts are generally ADHD suffering kids with an attention span of 0.5 seconds who, upon being expected to contribute something to a forum post that requires more thought than the simple pressing of some now fading buttons on a keyboard, will probably emigrate back to the cheezburger network where they belong.

Wow, this actually got me worked up and annoyed about a subsection of the online community... I wonder if this is how PC gamers feel all the time.

I agree completely with you.

I don't like people who post "first" but then I just read it, roll my eyes and move on.

Now people who take their opinion as fact and are completely opposed to anything that does not fall in line with their beliefs, THOSE assholes piss me off...

To be honest, I don't even see that many people posting 'first'. The only time that I see the first posters getting some form of mod wrath is when they comment on a video as soon as it goes up, when they couldn't possibly have watched the whole thing. In these cases, it's not the fact that they post first that's the problem. The only way to solve this would be to block comments until a certain time after the video is posted. Or, just give people who do that warnings. Which is what happens now. So really, I'm not sure that there's even a problem.

Whenever I look at the comments for a ZP video, there's usually only about 4 or less "first" comments.
And you know what I do?
I just ignore them.
Problem solved!
