Most of the "I might need it later" situations are basically just "I don't need it". If you needed it, you can be damn well sure you'd use it. However, when it comes to consumables, developers are forced to balance games around the assumption that a player might come into an encounter with nothing but the clothes on his/her back. Since devs don't dare to set up a situation in which a player might not be able to progress due to his past mistakes, consumable items are either overly abundant or not really needed or both.
Ah, I still fondly remember the days of Baldur's Gate 1, especially in the early levels, when every Healing Potion was worth pure gold. You needed them and you sure as hell used them. If you ran out, you'd often have to get creative about your tactics.
Nowdays, it's simply a matter of reaching teh critical mass of healing potions, medkits, ammo and whatnot, beyond which you are basically immune to everything...

Well i just got Borderlands, and its kinda weird when i have a scoped shotgun that lights people on fire that is $4000, whereas a non-scoped shotgun that only does a little better and has no elemental powers is $10000, but i still hold on to both.
Over the years, I've come to stop hoarding items in games, because is so much more fun to just use them.
However; back in the days of Silent Hill, once my buddy and I found the huge fire axe, we didn't use any other weapon until the last boss. We saved every rifle bullet we found, and then killed the boss 'em.

I can't think of any good recent ones, but Oblivion. I can create good potions but never put them to use because I always feel there will be another time where it would be put to better use.
Fallout 3: I kept the Fat Man in reserve for the entire game and ended up never using the damn thing.
Oblivion: I was using an Iron longsword when I had a beautifully enchanted dwemer one.
All Halo games: Rockets. Never used them unless it's against a Hunter.
Only exception is usually Call of Duty. I'll use anything I have all the time.

I never use Welkyd stones, because I keep thinking that, "Oh, if I run into a difficult fight and need to instantly refill my magicka, I can use them."
Fast forward a year since I bought Oblivion, I have NEVER used a Welkyd stone. EVER.

In any RPG, I always keep everything (unless I upgrade a weapon, then I get rid of the old weapon). I usually never end up using them because I level up like a mad man and therefore I'm usually never in danger of dying, but I keep everything nonetheless.
My newest character has been eating them like skittles (yes, eating - he's a Khajit, I'm sure that works somehow), but before that I stashed them at home for later use...SantoUno said:

Any shooter I play, I always make sure to keep the sniper rifle and either a scoped semi-automatic or a shotgun for this exact reason. Though to be fair, I do usually play as a sniper anyway (damn good at it too) so I tend to actually need them later anyway. Oh, and I tend to do this with ammo for literally everything on Bioshock, just in case. Even though I tend to prefer to just use the Fire plasmid and the automatic rifle all the time...
Otherwise, I'm forced by the game to do this on some occasions, due to my tendency to enjoy point-and-click adventures, specifically The Longest Journey (although to be fair, at least that monkey did come in useful again later, as did all the stuff I put that poor police officer through that he certainly didn't deserve...).

My main character on WoW has so much stuff in his bank that I know I'll never use. 5 pieces of Bloodstone Ore? I don't even remember what it's used for...but I might need it.
T1 armor sets? I don't even need them, I never will but they're mine and I'm not getting rid of them.
My Death Knight has been carting around a stack of Obsidian Warbeads for no good reason. Maybe on the odd chance that I decide to go and Rep Grind for the Mag'Har some day?
Other than WoW I have to admit I'm a massive hoarder in Resident Evil games. I will use my basic starter pistol for a good 89% of the game because I just assume the last boss will be a huge monstrosity that will require every single shot I have to kill it.
There's certainly nothing in the history of these titles that makes me think that the game will provide a magical macguffin weapon like say a Rocket Launcher.

This is what I hate about games with weight limited inventory. In Fallout, I love to keep lots of different armor and weapons, but the weight kills me.
In WoW, I have so many pets you wouldn't believe. I collect them. I've grinded all those little dragons, taken in part in the orphan quest every year. My favorite pet has always, and will always be my turtle though. It's always in my inventory, and it even has it's own slot on my main bar.

If a game has healing items and the gameplay isn't hard enough to use them on a regular basis or allows you to use other methods of healing (such as magic), I always, always finish the game with the maximum amount of said items. I always finish games like Pokemon or Final Fantasy with 99 potions for instance.Trezu said:
