This is most likely the 329,584,097,234th time someone has asked this but I was wondering what book I should begin reading.

I'm looking for something in-depth and in a fantasy/sci-fi setting, the thing is I'm the sort of reader that if I'm not sucked in quickly, I'll put the book down and never read it again. I don't like people using Tolkien's races, other than Tolkien unless they do a decent job of it. So really I just want something a bit original (in the writing, style and depth), gripping and worth the ride. I also don't mind Japanese style writing (manga whatnot).

I haven't read many book before but I have read;
- Orcs, Stan Nicholls
- Colour of Magic, Terry Pratchett
- The Wee Free Men,Terry Pratchett

And for Manga I read/have read;
- Persona
- Soul Eater
- I Luv Halloween
- Fullmetal Alchemist

Exactly. That's it. I'm too picky and for no reason at all, give me something mega to read. I'm also purchasing Dune, Game of Thrones (and that series) and Mogworld in the coming days, just need more.
Ignore everything else suggested here and go pick up anything by Brandon Sanderson. Mistborn, Elantris, Way of Kings, Warbreaker. It's the best fantasy there is, bar none.

Hunger Games (as said above) is one of my top 3 favorite book series including Enders Game (another OMG series and an older series) and Beautifal Creatures(more romancy than anything and a much newer series... so it isnt a completed series)
of the three read Hunger Games now because the movie is coming out next year and when i say read the Hunger Games, i mean read them all(3) you wont regret it

You should check out Chinda Williams Chima's book. She has two series, one is AU, and the other is "earth" as in there is magic, but like HP also is in the "real world." But I prefer her AU Seven Realms books the first one is called "The Demon King." She has a good style and is fairly original.

I guess if you like fantasy, Lord Of The Rings is probably the best pick of the lot. I'd recommend the Inheritance series (Eragon, Eldest and Brisingr) but even as a long standing fan since the age of about 14 I can tell you it is most definitely a rip-off of the aforementioned title and is, in-all seriousness, probably only epic in my eyes because of the focus on dragons.

If you want character development, fantastic plot and possibly the best fantasy book of all time (though I wouldn't know, I haven't read them all) go for the former. You want dwagons? go for the big shiny on-going series, but endeavour to never, never watch the movie.

also this, if you're gunna read it do so before the lord of the rings 'cause there's spoilers.

Lights Fantastic is the sequel(or prequel, I forget) to the Colour Of Magic so if you liked Rincewind and his luggage -I fucking loved them- that's a good one. I also loved Monstrous Regiment and Going Postal.

Into the darkness by harry turtledove.

Half Fantasy epic, half speculative fiction, 100% excellent. Part one in a series of six doorstopper sized books with over a dozen main characters. I recommend it highly though it is adult fiction so there is sex and rather brutal acts of violence.

Why does no-one read Robert Rankin or Jasper Fforde? :(
I love Jasper Fforde! *brofist* (not often I find someone else who does)

OT: I'd recommend Fforde too. And I do enjoy Jim Butcher's Dresden Files series - written in a bit of a neo-noir style about a wizard in Chicago - although that might be primarily because I'm listening to the audio books and James Marsters does the reading. Mmmmmm, James Marsters... other than that I've got nothing, too tired to think.

EDIT: Oh and more Pratchett. Love me some Pratchett. And Neil Gaiman. Heck, combine the two and read Good Omens.

Try Neuromancer by William Gibson if you're in the mood for sci-fi. If you like Deus Ex, it'll be your kind of thing.

I am an avid reader, and I may have the perfect set of novels for you.

I recently discovered my new favorite author, Ken Follet (pron: foi-et), and some of his remarkable novels.

I have only just finished another one of his books, "Place Called Freedom," which I highly recommend to anyone ~18 plus. His novels are very mature, sparing no detail from brutal encounters to passionate love-making (and the occasional mixture of the two), but the dialogue and plots of the wonderful worlds he creates are instantly captivating.

My favorite books of his are a short series based in medieval England, and spanning the lifetimes of their main characters and ultimately many generations. Beginning with the first novel "Pillars of Earth" set in around 1100 a.d, the series follows not just one, but many characters through their lifelong journey from early childhood to their emotional endings, and occasionally, an early grave. Spanning a great deal of time, the story emerges again a couple centuries later with "World Without End." There are many twists and curveballs that keep you on the edge of your seat throughout both novels, and based on your need for instant immersion, I feel that these books would do just the trick.

I can't stress enough that this is VERY far from anything Manga, but it is something I imagine anyone asking for reading advice on a gaming site to thoroughly enjoy.

Read Philip K Dick. He was a great sci-fi writer. If you ever liked Blade Runner, Total Recall, A Scanner Darkly or Minority Report, you'll definitely enjoy the original sources... muuuccchh better thean the films.

Try Ubik, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep or The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, and other reality shattering books by him.

There were a lot of good suggestions here, but they seemed to have missed a few key reads.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. SciFi Comedy. A nice large read and helps you survive should you find yourself hitchhiking in the galaxy.

John Dies at the End by David Wong. Comedic Horror. If you want unique, this is the book for you. This book has spread like wildfire through word of mouth. I've lent my copy to several friends and theyve all enjoyed it thoroughly.

The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay. Everyone I know that read the series not only really liked it, but couldn't put it down. I normally hate reading since I have trouble getting into books, but I remember staying up until 4 in the morning reading the second book.

Obligatory Ender's Game/Shadow referral!

Also, the entire Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Shao Kahn shares his thoughts.
