If you end up liking this series(or even just the first book) also look into the Codex Alera series, but the same author. A bit "higher" fantasy, and a lot of fun to read.Draconalis said:

"Lord Foul's Bane" By Stephen R Donaldson is a superb book and I highly recommend you read it. Also "Orion" By Ben Bova, "Red Star, Winter Orbit" By William Gibson, and "Shogun" By James Clavell.

The Twenty Palaces series are a bit darker and have a different sort of magic and monsters than I'm used to which I found interesting(very quickly became one of my top 3 favorite series).

A Song of Ice and Fire Series by George R.R. Martin. Its describes as fantasy for people who don't like fantasy.
i am reading "blood of elves" which is the first in a saga featuring garalt of rivia. its really the only book that has ever kept my attention and made me want to read more. granted it is an easy read. its not a short book, but it goes by fast because of its fluid style and voice. epic story too.
I'll third the Jasper Fforde suggestion, and add the Johannes Cabal books by Jonathan L. Howard. I'm enjoying the second one right now.
