Any recommendations? Anything sci-fi, philosophical, or just generally awesome.

I reach out to the mighty knowledge base that is The Escapist community.
Shantaram [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shantaram_(novel)] by Gregory David Roberts.

It's one of the best books I have ever read.

Shantaram is a 2003 novel by Gregory David Roberts, a convicted Australian bank robber and heroin addict who escaped from Pentridge Prison and fled to India where he lived for 10 years.
This book is most glorious!

I don't know if you're into fantasy. But if you are read Sabriel, Lireal and Abhorson, It's a trilogy called the Abhorson Chronicles written by Garth Nix. Best damn books I've ever read. Maybe have a look at Mogworld too, great book.

The Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson is an amazing series.
Also, the Codex of Alera series by Jim Butcher is pretty good as well.

I recommend anything by Joe R. Lansdale. A TX author who does some very good work in sci-fi, western, and mystery. Lansdale's "The Bottoms" reads like "To Kill a Mockingbird," only with more murder and a rape or 2.

How about something silly, a bit of sci-fi and a lot of stupidity and dick jokes :)

John Dies At The End by David Wong

Awesome story, really funny, some creepy stuff, some philosophical stuff, but not too deep. Al in all very enjoyable if you are in that sort of thing.

I would recommend the Skulduggery Pleasant series- it's well-written, witty and has an interesting plot.
Oh, you wanted sci-fi/philosophical. Well, I would have to agree with the poster above who said Artemis Fowl.

In the other thread, I recommended Game of Thrones (part of Song of Ice and Fire series). I still recommend it.

However, since you are in the mood for "philosophical"... here is one you've probably never heard of. The "Master and Margarita" by Bulgakov. It's one of the greatest novels of the 20th century, but it's very poorly known in the States. Fun facts about its creation:

- After the author wrote the first draft, he burnt it, after seeing no chance to publish something like that in USSR (this is Soviet Union circa 1928, Stalin just coming into power).
- Several years later he re-wrote it. In the novel, a similar story happens to the Master, whom the devil hands back the manuscript, and says: "Didn't you know? Manuscripts don't burn."
- The book was first published more than 25 years after the author's death.
- It has a giant black cat in it named "Behemoth".
- The apartment in Moscow, where the author lived (and where parts of the book occur) has occurred in the book, has become a gathering point for russian satanists.

Note, that you by no means have to believe in God etc to read it, but it is probably one of the most powerful pieces of literature that deals with religion, sin etc. so directly.

Anything by Theodore Sturgeon, though you might want to start with his short stories.
They play with some interesting ideas without lasting long enough to get boring.

Relic by Dougles Preston and Licoln Child. Awesome suspenseful/horrer/mystery book.

EDIT: Oh, actually I recommennd Blasphemy by Dougles Preston. That book is a very science-fiction/philosophical book. But if you beleive in the Christian religion then you might find it a bit offensive.

I always say Matthew Reilly...cos you just cant get more awesome!

The only reason they havent made a movie out of any of his books yet is cos the budget would be too high.

Dune, The Divine Comedy, The Name of the Wind are all awsome books. If you want anything philosophical (in that it's actual philosophy) I recommend Kierkegaard, Sartre and Wittgenstein.

Can't believe no one has mentioned China Mieville yet. I'm currently reading Perdido Street Station, and it's an unbelievable mix of philosophy, sci-fi, steampunk and social commentary.

Consider Phlebas by Iain.M.Banks is probably the best Sci-Fi book I've ever read, and I found it to be a good introduction to the Culture series, although most people recommend Use of Weapons.

My favorite book series of all time is fairly easy reading, the Bartimaeus series by Jonathan Stroud. Easy going fantasy with lots of comedy, a great narrative style and good pacing. Start with the Amulet of Samarkand, it's brill.

One of my favorite series is the Galactic Mileu series by Julian May. It's a Sci-Fi with some fantasy elements. It's a really good series, if you'd be interested, read Intervention first, it's a prelude to the series proper, and a pretty damn good standalone book as well!
