For me the pet name always just comes to be after seeing it.

Agro? That horse is fucking awesome in Shadow of the Colossus.
Wasn't it Argo?
It was Agro.

If the dog is a girl, name it Epona. You must stick with the video game horse motif!
I always pronounced it like Wanderer. "AHGRHUH!!" Never could understand that child.

OT: I just named my Warhound in Dragon Age "Garrith" on a whim. It means nothing to me, but it rolls off my tongue nicely.

Pascal. In the Super Nintendo version of Shin Megami Tensei, you could fuse him with demons. Level 40+ demons. At the beginning of the game.

Like Kerberos.

I'm all in favour of historical characters. My cousins have a mini foxy named Xerxes, so perhaps Darius? or Caesar?

If you like Dragon Age you could name it Barkspawn, can't really think of anything else off the top of my head though

I named my cat Sparta.
Whatever name you pick, even if it doesn't seem to fit right away, it'll grow on you.
You can name it Pebbles or Plank or whatever, and it'll still end up being a good name.
If not right away, then eventually.
