I agree.. I couldn't even get through half of Titan Quest without epic boredom kicking in. Just thought I'd throw it out there since everybody compares it to Diablo, and that was on your list.

"did vampire, nothin special there"

Weird, I really thought that game had character to it. The major problems were the horrible bugs and glitches. But the community patches helped to clear that up for the most part. I actually didn't finish it on my first try.. it was a couple of years later when I reinstalled the game out of boredom and then suddenly I couldn't put it down until I finished it.

On a side note.. have you tried Gothic 3 since the latest community patch has come out? Do you think it's worth giving that game another go?

Also, I've heard very good things about Arx Fatalis.. haven't tried it myself yet, though.

For those who don't know, it is an abandonware site. These are games who have let their copyright expire so they are now freeware.
Just wanted to point out that this is a bullcrap myth, there is no such thing as a game losing it's copyright and suddenly, it's "free."

Not how it works.

Copyrights last at least 50 years, bare minimum, and most if not all are renewed before that happens.

And even when it does expire, it's still not "free."

Every single one of the games on that site are just as illegal as any torrent or fileshare of a game you can find.

Anyway, throw my vote in with Vampire: The Masquerade and Arcanum, both very much worthwhile and definitly worth finding.

Anachronox has JRPG style combat, but it's absolutely hilarious so you should check it out.

Other than that, Mass Effect just came out. It's pretty short as far as rpg's go, and the sidequests are iffy, but the main game's fantastic and the dialogue system is really organic.

There is no reason to get nasty and hostile about it.

You are a little right, and a little wrong. First off a large percentage of the games on there are freeware. So there are more then a few that are in fact 100% legal free. Share and enjoy.

I don?t know about copyright length. I thought it was only 25 years. But regardless very few publishers that would extend copyrights for games. It costs money to do it, and unless there is some profit in it, there is no reason to pursue it. If it is a franchise like Mario or something, then of course. But the old stuff.. why bother. If a game loses it?s copyright, then it is, in fact, free to distribute. But if the copyright is actually 50 years, this has not occurred yet.

That being said there are more then a few games on there that are technically illegal. But abandonware means the game is no longer distributed through any retail outlets. Underdogs is very quick to pull anything on their site which is still available in stores, being distributed digitally, or has been re-introduced through some sort compilation pack or something. They are allowed to operate in full view because the publishers know that at worse they make a few bucks from site advertisements and at best they maintain awareness of games gone by. They have been active for a very long time, I doubt they have gone unnoticed by the likes of EA, Sierra, Activision, or any of the other major publishers. Yet they still have pretty extensive catalogs of their old games. I could be wrong, but in this age of sue-first-ask-questions-later I take this to be as close to an official ?OK? as you are likely to get. :)

when you guys are referring to Vampire: The Masquerade, are you talking about the first one or Bloodlines?

I don't mean to appear snide but did you play KOTOR or just dismiss it because it was Star Wars? I don't go for RPGs and detest Star Wars but KOTOR was one of my favourites on the Xbox. I spent three days over the Christmas period playing it. I'd literally wake up, play, sleep, wake up, play, sleep and so on. These were my precious days off work too so I was obviously pretty absorbed.

Of course if you did play it and didn't like it, I'll just get my coat.

Not quite right. Many of the games on that site have been made into freeware by the publishers. And UD is very careful about not leaving up links to games whose publishers are making them available through other means (like Planescape, in fact).

As for "illegal" - well, that's not always the same as wrong. It might be illegal to download a game off that site, but if the owners of that game aren't making it commercially available and have no intention to do so (particularly when that game is 15+ years old, as many on UD are) then it's a moral grey area.

I was referring to Bloodlines. Haven't played Redemption, so I can't make a comment about that. Sorry for not being clear.

i did try KotoR for about 30 mins/1 hour, and i had no problems with the gameplay and such, but theres something about star wars that fuels my inner rage, i dont really know why, but i really cant connect with those games, nor the movies for that matter.

oh and for those that havent noticed yet, i'm a snobby twat when it comes to picking games. :)

And i cant remember if i actually ever completed vampire... maybe i'll give it another run. And i finished Gothic 3 on my first run just because had done the previous 2, i have tried with the new patch but didnt notice much different in the first 2 hours and after that i got bored with it and didnt feel like playing the entire game again.

Ok, on about Titan Quest, anyone who compares this game to Diablo 2, and takes that statement seriously, is infected by stupid. The Classes are worse, and the class system is worse. The gameplay is pretty much the same, but it misses the good parts that made Diablo what it is: random maps, insane amount of items(titan quest has a lot, but not nearly this many) PVP PVP PVP, events, AND A GOOD FUCKING SERVER BROWSER, no anti hack functions AT ALL, at least diablo tried, the only thing that titan quest has that diablo doesnt, is user generated content, but i doubt this will give it nearly enough of an edge to beat Diablo 2, also, theres one big fat issue left with Titan Quest, no balance AT ALL, for instance, resistances can easily be put on 100%, some classes can kill the final boss at lvl 8, while others have trouble with him at lvl 30, on normal. The game is littered with these kind of flaws. Then the worst part, i completed the orignal game, and the expansion, and boy, was i dissapointed that i didnt get cinimatics that were even near as kick ass as those featured in Diablo 2, heck, diablo 1(i actually prefer diablo 1 gameplay wise btw) did better. Theres only one thing about Titan Quest that did make it somewhat fun, the bullshit physic's (if you can call it that) ever noticed that if you did a lot more damage then a monsters life it just went flying through screen, ragdolling in the weirdest way, i've had those cat people landing with open legs against a campfire, pussy on a barbeque huh?

"The gameplay is pretty much the same,"

I think that's why it's compared to Titan Quest. I haven't heard anyone outright say "Titan Quest is on par with Diablo" But they're in the same general genre. I will admit it right now and lay my life on the line and say..... I only played Diablo 1 for about 30 minutes.. never have played diablo 2. But for some reason I DID play Titan Quest.. and just didn't care for any of it.

"i've had those cat people landing with open legs against a campfire, pussy on a barbeque huh?"

That made me lol.

Eternal Sonata looks pretty good, especially if you like Chopin or anime or something original.

If you have NWN, Adam Miller's modules are vastly superior to the original campaign and expansions (with the possible exception of Hordes of the Underdark). They're called Shadowlords, Dreamcatcher, and Demon.

But if you have an Xbox 360 and like sci-fi, get Mass Effect. It nails that classic space opera feel like no other game I've played.
Mass Effect disappointed me a little. With all the hype and what not, I figured it would take a little bit longer than 20 hours to beat. I guess I would consider myself a gamer, but a good RPG in my opinion takes at least twice that, and even then not have a majority of the game completed. I had a level 47 character with only the 4 "collecting" side quests left to complete when I finished the game, and this is not me bragging, this is just so people won't expect a longer game.

Granted though, they have plans to release the following installments that I will purchase eventually, but I would wait a little until this one goes down in price.

I couldn't tell if we were just doing console games or computer games, but I'll put down my list of ones that I enjoyed:
- Any of the Mario RPGs (Super Mario RPG, SNES; Paper Mario, both Gamecube and Wii version)
- Final Fantasy Tactics; PS (Not really an strict RPG, kind of a combo between that and a strategy game, but I classify it in the category because it's just an awesome play)
- Dragon Quest VII; PS2 (I really enjoyed the cell animation and I'm a fan of the Dragon Quest series in general, so I am probably partial)
- Disgaea 1&2; PS2 (There is no level limit to your characters, but I wouldn't suggest this one until you play Tactics...it's like that on cocaine)
- Wait for Fallout 3...

I'm racking my brain for anything PC that hasn't been mentioned, but right now I don't have anything. If I think of something later, I'll be sure to post back...I'm also on the market for a new game b/c I just beat Assassin's Creed (and yes, I did enjoy Zero's review).

If you don't mind the graphical hit (and something tells me you don't) you should check out http://www.the-underdogs.info/genre.php?id=7 there are a lot of great RPGs for you. Best part is.. free free free!

For those who don't know, it is an abandonware site. These are games who have let their copyright expire so they are now freeware. Some noteworthy games are Wasteland (the spiritual precursor to Fallout.) System Shock (precursor to Bioshock, with a lot more RPG in it) and Planescape: Torment.
Some of these might definitely be worth a look. Much appreciated.
