No one has mentioned Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series yet? I know it doesn't technically count as an anime, but I still maintain that it is essensial to watch. Why? If you have to ask, then you haven't seen it yet.
Don't forget DBZ Abridged. Even LK himself says it's great and narrates some of the episodes. They recently released episode 11, too.

Black Lagoon is my recomendation. It's sort of like someone mashed together the best 80's American, Hong Kong action and Japanese Yakuza films into one series

This. Very much so. Black Lagoon is great.

One piece has like 400 episodes, but once you make it to the Arlong Park Arc, you will be hooked.

I am capable of enjoying:
-action
-mecha (as long as it is done well)
-fantasy (likewise)
-sci-fi
-romance (but only if it acts as a sub-plot)

I know I have exacting standards, but I am open to suggestions of animes outside of these guidelines as well.
"Exacting standards"... try almost impossible.

I want to suggest "Batman: The Brave and the Bold", but it's not anime...
Oh hell yes, but its better than Anime in the single fact that it isn't fan service.
Show me a single anime/manga without ANY FAN SERVICE what so ever and I'll read it..
There are a few from japan that translate terribly but are pretty good though.

Whatever you do, take ym advice and don't watch any of the shit currently airing in Japan at the moment. With the exception of Dyurarara! it's all RUBBISH. We're currently in the middle of what is seriously the WORST season of anime EVER MADE. Half of it's effectively porn only without the guts to have actual sex in it and half of THAT is wannabe pedophile porn. Ugh! What happened to the days when they actually made anime that was ABOUT something?!

Uh, anyway, getting back to your actual question... dude, you didn't tell me what you've actually seen already. Lacking that, I'd suggest Full Metal Panic, RahXephon and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. I could suggest many more, but that'd do for a start.

Oh god I couldn't get through that one it was good but FAR too depressing

on topic
Wolf's Rain
Scrapped Princess(Sci-Fi, Fantasy pretty good)
Shakugan no Shana(has a follow up second)
Planetes(Basically binmen IN SPACE better than it sounds)
Outlaw Star
Gunslinger Girl(it has a follow up too)
Trigun
FLCL
Elfen Lied
Black Cat(manga's better though)
Hellsing/Ultimate OVA's
Samurai Champloo
Death Note
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai(haven't seen Umineko yet but it can't be bad)
Cowboy Bebop(of course)
Ghost in the Shell(a film but you might like it)
Ghost in the Shell: Innocence(the sequel to the above)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig(what a mouthful)
Narutaru
Kamichu(you may or may not like this one it's basically Studio Ghibli the series)

That ought to have yo covered for a while.

Edit: whoops forgot FullMetal Panic and it's follow ups they are also definately worth wathcing

Well, based on your criteria, the only anime I can really suggest is Cowboy Bebop.
I find Faye annoying.

I recommend Trigun, although it depends on what one considers annoying etc. What I do find funny is how the OP has struck out most anime with what he doesn't want in it.

Pff--dare to dream, bud.

I'm gonna suggest Read Or Die (the OVA and the TV series), Puni Puni Poemy, and Mnemosyne, just because I'm sure you'll ***** about all of them, you mammariphobic misogynist you.

>Leave a gap<

There's this one anime that only comes on at midnight when the moon's full. You have to turn the TV to channel 01. It's a huge mindfuck, but you might like it.
Try me. I'm not a complete bastard. And I am certainly not Mammariphobic, I just tend to find that animes that focus soley on MASSIVE BOOBS have storylines that aren't all that engaging, and characters that are otherwise uninteresting and bland.

Eac to his own, different animes appeal to different people. I don't force my vews on you, so shoot me.

I know this has been done before, but I am in need. I have a half-term holiday coming up and need a new anime to watch.

Required fields are:
-no more than 30 episodes
-no annoying anime chicks
-must have good character design
-no furry stuff or ridiculous fan service.
-as little filler as possible
By "annoying anime chicks" do you mean "no angry bitches" or "no weak dainty prissy little whiners who cry at the drop of a hat?"

"No filler," I guess that restricts you to mostly pre-Y2K animes.

Style is an individual taste. Give me 10-20 examples of animes with styles you hate. I've seen over 300 series, so it will help give me a good idea of what to recommend.

I take it by "no fanservice" you mean "no harem series?"

I also need to know if you prefur dubb or sub. Answer all this, & I'll give you a direct link to something you can watch online.

If you like your anime to make sense, don't watch FLCL. It's like smoking acid.

There's this real interesting anime I recently found called Kampfer. It's pretty good, but there are only 11 episodes. They have a lot of dark humor.
