This is my first post everyone, please be nice.
I like to think of myself as an anime fan, but lately I've struggled trying to find a new one to start watching. I have seen all the Dragonball, including Z and GT, series, as well as all of Naruto, Bleach, and Fullmetal Alchemist. I started Death Note but lost interest after the "L" arc was over. I prefer shows with a good story as well as a decent amount of action.
So any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Do you like comedy?

Clannad has a good story, quite a bit of comedy sprinkled everywhere, and it's actually funny. Very little action though. It is still a great anime though, so try it. There's also Elfen Lied, which has a LOT of blood, action, etc, but I'm reluctant to recommend it since the anime sucks ASS compared to the manga. If you don't mind reading mangas, read the Elfen Lied manga. It has a great story, but it's pretty damn NSFW with a lot of blood, nudity, and other crap for mature audiences. Oh, and add some incest, a few other fetishes, and other crap. Fanservice paradise... Not that I'm into that crap, but it's not something very negligible, and some might not want to read/watch stuff like that, but whatever...

I've never actually tried watching an anime comedy. I usually stick to the action packed ones since American cartoons are just awful. I'll definitely give these shows a shot though. Thanks for your suggestion!

I would recommend Darker than Black, it has a fantastic story, plenty of action and is just long enough that it doesn't become stale and boring.

History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/KenichiTheMightiestDisciple]is a fantastic anime about a boy's journey to becoming a man - it's got some fairly deep storylines and characters, whilst still having plenty of action and excitement, plus it still manages to constantly and deliberately make fun of itself. :)

I don't suggest you read further than the intro on the site, btw, for spoiler's sake.

(The name on the website I linked is different because it's the name of the manga.)

If its decent ploit you looking for you may like darker than black.
The ploit is good but the problem I think some people mite have is that bases in alternate reality and not much told about the would at the start apart from the basic stuff like the stuff about fake stars people called Contractors. But theirs stuff you will need to pay attion to that comes up in covions about the would they live in. But overall its good. be warned it can get dark, charators get killed (but make it more intesting to see how lives.)and its mostly episodic storys. The actions is well animated But for me they were pritty short, but better to have short but sweet fight than a long drone out one.

I like to go into more but there a lot to the show and tine nite picks I had, but I can't bowered and i don't wont to spoil it.

Try the one my avatar's from.

Most people don't know about it, so I assume you've probably never seen it.
If you like Harem anime with wacky antics throughout, watch it. It's called UFO Ultramaiden Valkyrie.

Neon Genesis Evangelion. It fits your "good story and good action" clause.

Watch it. Now.

What are you still doing here reading this post? Go.

Black Lagoon, nuff said here. It's an interesting story about the outdated moralities held by those too ignorant to see that the world has no use for them anymore and the sad truth that to survive, these moralities must be abandoned. Also, it's about modern day pirates in Thailand and one of them is this hot chick in a sports bra who has these two guns and boom headshots everyone and there's this one maid and holycrap she's the terminator and what the hell, the main character doesn't fight but why is he so badass whoa who is this blond russian chick and why is she so cool damn did john woo direct this series i dunno but that nun is packing a golden desert eagle. Seriously, check it out. Probably the most badass anime to come out in a long, long time.

One Piece is more entertaining than Bleach and Naruto.

Hellsing OVA (not the regular anime) is probably the greatest anime thing I have ever watched.

Avatar: The Last Airbender not an anime but it acts like one and it deserves to be respected like one. Watch it, you won't be disappointed.

I'm just going to name any that I liked:

Neon Genesis Evangelion
Rebuild of Evangelion 1.0 and 2.22
Elfen Lied
Darker than Black
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai
Hellsing Ultimate
RahXephon
Angel Beats!
Ghost in the Shell
Baccano!

Also if you like psychological or aniomes that have a great story try but not so much story try:

Serial Experiments Lain

Full Metal Panic: Fumoffu!
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Desert Punk
All of the Ghost in the Shell movies and series'
To name but a few...

Don't bother with Gantz... soooo, slow. You'll find yourself crying, saying "Please, just DO something... Anything!" Then they do, and you're dissapointed. The alleged build up's never worth it.

Well having seen what my friends calls "WAY TOO MUCH ANIME" you really should try out atleast one of the following:
Eureka Seven
Darker Than Black
Air Gear
Trigun
Soul Eater
RahXephon
Those are probably the only ones I can recommend since I don't really watch that much action...
Not to advertise but I'm just gonna throw a link up that have really helped me find new anime:

Watch Trigun - it's got a decent amount of action while also being rather comedic.
You could also watch Code Geass (the English dub of it) alongside the English dub of Trigun just to contrast Johnny Yong Bosch accidentally causing a genocide and Johnny Yong Bosch shouting "Love and peace!" at people.
