yes, i need. not want. need.

anyway, i recently played through mafia 2 and the vendetta dlc isn't really doing it for me, dead rising 2 does nothing but make me want to off myself and i'm taking a break from WoW till cataclysm. i just finished pruning me music collection and good god i'm bored.

so, if you wouldn't mind sharing with me a game you really liked and think is worth a playthrough, i would appreciate it greatly.

only a few stipulations:

i don't care what genre it is, but preferably pc games only (though i do own a ps3, so if something is REALLY worth it, i'm open games for it)
and no jrpgs

tl;dr
recommend me a game to play, doesn't matter how old or new, preferably for pc, no jrpgs. many thanks.

I just finished Crysis: Warhead, so either of those come to mind. Also there's always Civ V.

In the sandbox range, what about Saints Row 2? I think it got a PS3 release. But it will take some tinkering to get it to run properly on the PC.

Saints Row 2 is fun, but it doesn't let CrossfireX or SLI run properly, and it has multiple other problems, so you can't up the graphics too much (without it freezing every ten seconds...). But once you get it running, it is highly amusing.

Garry's Mod, Half-Life 2, Portal, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and CSS. That's all the generic Valve suggestions out the way, although I do recommend them if you haven't played them.

Apart from that, Thief: Deadly Shadows and The Witcher are good, and cheap. I have both, I just have little desire to play anything that doesn't give me an explosion or headshot every 30 seconds at least.

Demon's Souls is a great time filler, if you have a lot of time that is.

Minecraft.
It's awesome.

Also, if you're looking for something free and fun: Battle for Wesnoth is alright, FreeCiv if you don't have a copy of the Civ games, and OpenTDD if you like Transport Tycoon. I love open source games.

If you want to spend money, then...Civ 5? Any of the Total War games? The Baldur's Gate saga?
Those would keep me busy for a long time.

Well, Enslaved is out tomorrow here in the UK (if that's where you be rollin).

Looks to me to be in the same vein as The Sands of Time; and any self-respecting gamer should be wanking themselves silly over something like that.

I'll quote what I said on another thread.

GET HOMEWORLD. If you like RTS games then it's a must. If not, well, the cost at which you can get it from Amazon (read: dirt cheap) means it's worth a try anyway, as it plays very differently to other RTS games. And it fits your criteria to the letter (old, PC game, works on XP).

The main selling point is the 3D gameplay, which is implemented simply yet well (I've always found something funny about the way it "adds another dimension to the gameplay" by quite literally adding another dimension). The graphics are pixellated, as you might expect from an 11 year old game, but the way they're used turns it into the most beautiful game I've played. Seriously, it's like playing inside art.

The soundtrack is hauntingly brilliant. It manages to really get across the feel of "space is really really freakin' HUGE man". The battle themes are catchy, the ambient background music (especially in the Nebula) is probably the best ever composed and the main theme is fucking Agnus Dei (basically Adagio for Strings, but with a chorus).

The story is what a story in an RTS should be. There are no real characters (just some voices with names, really), but the story instead focuses on your people and their plight as a whole. Furthermore, the story is told with great atmosphere and emotion, which makes it very compelling.

So, there we have at least 4 selling points - one tip, however: Use a walkthrough. The game is HARD.

OhJohnNo (the travelling Homeworld preacher) out.
It does play very differently to your average RTS, so be prepared.

If you decide it doesn't sound like your kind of thing, then I'd say Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2. I have them on the Xbox 360 and they are some of my favourite games, and I've heard they're even better on PC (well, the first one anyway). The games have an excellent story and good characters, and the combat - while not on the ridiculously fun level of, say, Halo - is perfectly alright and not likely to bore you to sleep. The first game also balances it out with my favourite vehicle section in any game - I don't care what anyone else says, the Mako is awesome. The handling can take some getting used to but it isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be (well, actually I dunno how well the controls would transition to PC... but I found it incredibly fun, so there).

A sandbox game? Go get Dwarf Fortress [http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/features.html], the most insane sandbox game out there.

Do use this very helpful tutorial [http://afteractionreporter.com/2009/02/09/the-complete-and-utter-newby-tutorial-for-dwarf-fortress-part-1-wtf/] to learn your away around the game. You'll need it. It even includes a version of the game with sprites to make the game less of an eyesore, and in my case actually playable.

And Minecraft too. It's like LEGO 2.0, with infinite blocks.
