Star Wars: Dark Forces is pretty great and can be tough as heck. The sequal is pretty good, too.

Knights of the Old Republic 1 is an absolute stand out CLASSIC game, plus it'll play on practically any computer. KoTor 2 is also excellent (not as good as the original) but has a few more required specs. Needs a graphics card with HW T&L so if you have an Intel chipset in your computer watch out for that.

Failing that, you could always get Pychonauts, thats more fun than a big pile of whimsical monkeys, to paraphrase a certain Mr.Yahtzee.

I recently bought Persona 3 (and Persona 4, but I wanted to play three before four), and I must say it's a brilliant take on an RPG! Not some final fantasy rip, either. It's like the Sims meets Diablo, meets Final Fantasy (for the stand around in combat, aspect). There's a time limit, and a whole heap of mystery!

I'm so addicted to Persona 3, that I only got 5 hours of sleep last night. Phew! I highly recomend it, if you don't mind stepping back to the PS2 era. I don't mind, personally. But that's not everyone. :)

You needn't worry about playing through P3 before P4.. the stories don't have anything to do with them, and other then graphically, P3 is a lot more in depth then P4, and feels like a successor rather then a predecessor (I'm not going to say sequel/prequel, because they really aren't that.) I much prefer P4 because I find it more simple, and I appreciate simplicity.

I'm actually really glad that I picked up P3, and opted to play it before P4. I've got the bonus edition one, and the complexity really gets me going. I often get bored with RPGs when their complexity runs thin. Here, it's layers and layers of Sims style Life, and an over arching theme of Doom!

Also an RPG set to a clock is damn sexy. I've often pointed at the timers in Final Fantasy that count my play time, and comment about how cool it'd be if there was an arbatrary time frame in place. After 99 hours, it's game over. :) Don't tell me if this is the case in P3, as I suspect I only have an in game year to make progress to the games end.

I'm about to experiance the first Full Moon since the game began. I'd play through it, but I must sleep. If P4 is anything like P3, even simplified, I will be in heaven. So far, P3 is an RPG dream come true. :)

Preferably either 2 or 3.

American McGee's Alice. Do it, you know you want to.
American McGee's Alice! What a game that was...

Man the Cheshire Cat freaked me when I was playing that, not to mention the opening video.

To the OP: Never mind any game preferences, go get Alice!

Jade Empire is a fairly good RPG too, especially cos its all martial arts and not ridiculously large swords and angst hair. Plus its got a fab plot and its made by Bioware so you know its gonna be fairly awesome.

Deus Ex
Planescape Torment
Ultima VII (With the Exult source port)
System Shock 1 & 2
Operation Flashpoint

Buy any of these, and you'll be busy for a while.
