Whatever you do, don't get the latest generation Motorola phone. The Moto G runs android all right, but it's a low-budget, low-quality POS. I've had it for 5 months and I already want to murder its whole family.
I decided to get a Motorola Droid Turbo. It's a hell of a lot bigger than I wanted, but it has a great UI and a ton of features that I like, as well as a fantastic battery (or so I'm told), so I guess 2 out of 3 points isn't so bad. At least it's fairly thin and because it's built sturdily I probably won't need a case for it so that keeps it a bit smaller.
Go for a Nexus phone, they are the flagship for the android OS and will always run the latest version of Android. They dont have any of the custom modifications to the OS that other manufacturer's have so updating is always a breeze.
