Also, I do want to say Conviction or MGS 4, but those aren't exactly good "stealth" games as they are good "action" games.
Conviction, maybe so, but Metal Gear Solid 4 is the best Stealth game ever if you play it right.
But you don't have to "play it right". The game doesn't encourage stealth and that doesn't sit right with me.
Crank up the difficulty and the only way you will survive is playing it stealthy. I went for non lethal playthroughs and getting all the emblems and what not. There's really no other way on the higher difficulties.
Hmmm, you might be right.
I went for normal during my playthrough, so it was ridiculously easy - endless credits and camo.
It was a fucking good game though, too bad the cutscenes made so little sense.
Once the trophy update is out, I'm going for a second playthrough.

I'd give the Hitman series a whirl. Much better than Splinter Cell: Conviction for Stealth, in my opinion.
They out for pc?
Yes, all four of them.
The last one is the best one by far, imho.
I rented blood money a while back for the 360, this was back when the whole concept of using any form of thought apart from kill EVERYONE was new to me and i didnt really like it, but i have a feeling i would like it alot now, i think ill go download Buy Steal IMAGINE it now.

if you have a PS2 i recomend the Sly Cooper series. fun, cartoony, decent stealth mechanic and the story holds together well. (also you can get it realy cheaply)
Love Sly, but all these years later it kind of feels like 'Baby's first stealth game' Well not 'Baby's' per se, more like '7 year old's' but that doesn't ring quite as well.

Thief or Hitman were the decent stealth games really, I know you said the graphics annoyed you on thief but I think you should give it another go, it really is a class game.

All the other stealth games you can pretty much get away with blasting.

OR MGS games on european extreme difficulty, can't get caught or it's game over.

The Chronicles of Riddick game is an excellent stealth game. First Person Perspective with a great melee system. Riddick's eyeshine is awesome. It's the only movie based video game besides the Warriors on Xbox/Ps2 that i'd recommend readily. Plus you get twi games on one disc!

you could try the original splinter cell, it's slightly better than conviction, and i enjoyed it.

(Yes i did have a slight brain haemorrage at that time)

Well there's your problem, normal was a bit of a cakewalk if you've played a previous game in the series. I'm surprised you've only played it once since you're only considering a second playthrough. There's too many easter eggs!

I went for the emblems, buying as many items as I could, using as many different and interesting techniques as possible and one of my favourites was taking photos of the...I'll let the video do the talking.

You see, I don't happen to be an MGS fan.
In fact, I haven't played any MGS games before this one.
The fact that I enjoyed it is still surprising me, but getting all the stuff you listed takes far greater devotion to the game than I can have with Conviction, Just Cause 2, Uncharted and Top Spin 3 still waiting to be finished.

Hitman Blood Money
Hidden and dangerous 2
Death to spies: Moment of truth (3rd person only)

But the best pure stealth games is Thief 1 & 2 which I still play to this day, feel sorry for you that graphics is that important to you.

I would have to say MGS4; great, free gameplay and a fantastic plotline.

Also you get to electrocute people with a small, motorised robot. What part of that isn't awesome?

Have you tried Thief: Deadly shadows? I only saw one and two mentioned so far, Deadly Shadows is the third one as far as I know, and it is an amazing game with pretty decent graphics.

Any one of the Hitman games or Thief: Deadly Shadow if you can't stand the graphics of the older ones.

I'd be really careful when selecting a 'stealth' game. The vast majority are extremely poorly programmed. Sure, the graphics are good or whatever - but what's the point of a game where there is only ONE right answer, and until you magically guess it, you're going to fail/die and be stuck with horrendously long loading screens every single time.

I've yet to see one that had multiple REAL options (rather than just ways of committing sometimes humerous suicide) or gave enough hints to arrive that the magical RIGHT answer without spending hours on the wrong possibilities to really have much faith in this genre.

If anybody can point out a few good examples (and having played many of the games in this thread so far, I'm not convinced that'll happen), I'll be more than happy to reconsider it.

You had problems with Thief Two so I'm not sure you'll like the graphics in Deus Ex any better, but it does happen to be my favorite game of all time.

I see what you mean. I love the whole Metal Gear series, so I was dying to play it the way I'd played all the others. I recognise that the fact that it can be played all guns blazing on the middle-to-lower difficulties does put some people off.

Oblivion lets you use a stealthy character, the mechanics are pretty good. Not great, mind you but that game is a modder's dream.
really? I hated the stealth in oblivion
the assassin/thief guild quests are IMPOSSIBLE w/out invisibility
