Well, I can't recommend you anything too old, but I've got an author I think you'd enjoy. His name is Markus Zusak, and he's an Australian Author. He has two really good books: The Messenger (or I Am The Messenger) and The Book Thief. I seriously recommend them both, especially The Book Thief.
Friend, The Book Thief has been a New York Times bestseller for a total of over 4 entire years. =) Trust me, I've heard about it, and I've read it too. It made me cry.

My Life by Benvenuto Cellini. You might have read it if you're an English Major, but otherwise it is unlikely.

Anything by Arkady Averchenko. If you run into his short stories about Russian Revolution then knowledge of context would help. But otherwise his stories are a timeless satire of human behavior.

Sergei Dovlatov is somewhat known in the US. Not sure how much humor is lost in translation, but his worls made me want to laugh and cry at the same time. His style is also a unique experience without a single word that could be added or thrown away.

Water Margin or "The Scholars" by people's whose names I can't remember because I couldn't pronounce them when I first saw them.

You know that feeling you get? The one where you see a foreign name, acknowledge it is in fact a name, mumble something in your head, and then move on without taking the extra 10 seconds to break apart the syllables and pronounce it?

That was it. A chinese name, I'm sure you'll know which if you google it. The Scholars guy's name started with a W.

You should read those, they're pretty good from what I recall. Very Old Chinese Classic novels so the structure might be a bit weird if you love modern styles, but worth reading for sure.

Oh wow, you really do mean obscure then xD

Have you read the other Chinese Classics? Journey to the West and Romance of the three kingdoms are big as well. I've never read them, but they're held in high esteem.

A western Classic that isn't obscure, but is often overlooked is the Aeneid. It's almost a "sequel" to Homer's Iliad written by Virgil during the reign of Augustus Caesar. It's probably my favorite of the "greats"

Other than that, I guess I'm not sure. Philoctetes by Sophocles or Maybe The Divine Comedy if we're staying in the rough "classics" area.

I'd recommend all of those.

I've read Journey to the West, but I haven't read Romance of the Three Kingdoms yet. I'm planning on giving it a go once I'm done with Dreams of the Red Chamber. I've read The Divine Comedy too, but not the rest that you mention. They seem worth a try.

I would suggest Jam by Yahtzee Croshaw, but his style is probably too modern for your taste.
