For years and years now I've done this odd thing where for no obvious reason I'll suddenly have a painful or embarrassing memory flash into my mind. It's very sudden, sometimes quite painful and sometimes I'll not be able to help but shout short words or phrases from the memory. I was chatting to someone I met who studied psychiatric nursing who told me it was not, as I had thought, a fairly normal thing to happen and told me it can be a symptom of, or sometimes a contributing factor to, deeper psychological issues. Right, I thought, maybe I should get this checked out. So got my doctors appointment ready so he can check it out and if he thinks it's serious refer me to a specialist. However because I'm an absolute idiot, I forgot to write it down and have now completely forgot what the bloody thing is called. If any of you suffer from it, or have some expertise in the field and recognise the symptoms can you tell me the name so I have something to say to my doctor pretty please.

In short, what is the condition called that causes you to have sudden and incredibly vivid flashbacks to painful or embarrassing memories?

Well their called intrusive memories, but there our a number of things that can cause them. Anxiety, PTSD, repressed memories of sexual or physical abuse.

I don't know the name of it, but it sounds familiar. I get a cringeworthy memory suddenly jump me out of nowhere and I end up saying "die die diediedie" to the memory under my voice. I always thought it was something that happened to most people to be honest.

Not too sure about this, but it looks as though you're having dissociative abreactions, not a condition in itself, but a symptom that suggests at what Zmerc has indicated.

It's a form of subconscious catharsis through release of excess emotion caused by certain memories.

Hope that helps...

That simple? I thought for sure it'd have something long and complicated sounding. Oh well, now I have something to tell the bloke, cheers!

Intrusive thoughts can be a symptom of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) but that's not exactly the same as intrusive memories, I guess, and the shouting out loud thing is new to me.
