As well as the "V", but the "V" can also mean "two", as in; "I want two of those."
What? Never ever seen anyone use the so called "V" when they want to be rude.

Uhh gestures... not wearing shoes inside(does that even count? even if it does, doesn't all of the world do that except US)?

Honestly?
No, I only know it was in use before then and that the poular reasoning behind it, that the french would cut off an archers fingers, makse no sense as they would simply execute them.
I don't know it would seem a fairly good form of torture.

I mean how do you break a soldier? You make sure he can't fight anymore. But I do understand where you are coming from though.
True as that may be, they can't fight if they're dead.
But as I said its probably more a psychological thing to break Prisoners... or even better, propaganda from the British side that whomever their enemy is wants too take their ability too fight.
Well that would be pretty good propaganda.

I have a feeling your sociology experiment isn't going to work too well. Most people who are on the internet are from countries that have extremely similar gestures, especially hand-shaking and thumbs-up.
it honestly doesnt matter, as long as its from another country its fine, im not one to cut corners on project but there is no set curriculum for sociology in the state of idaho so the class is pretty much garbage
So why don't ya'll study the effects potatoes have on society?

That would seem much more Idah.... Idah... umm.... Idahoian? Idahoan? Denizen of Idaho?

Whatever. You get the picture.
Just because we are called the potato state doesn't mean we are all hicks and just think about potatoes, also idahoian
ummm... I'm a Virginian and I love potatoes and would sincerely have no problem with Idahoan's (that's what Google says is the correct name....... just saying) being hicks who think of potatoes.

And actually? The effects of potatoes on society is awesome. Without it, Western culture may not have become the dominant force in the world. So... it's really not a dis (and yes, I have actually studied it... lol :p )
Meh most of us say idahoians so its whatever i guess, but just the way it was phrased sounded rude

Seriously? Never seen anyone use the "V" for rudeness? Well I have, but then again, it may not be a common sign, but it happens.

Also: A yes, the shoe thing, that's really good example of cultural difference. Bravo.

I'm from Britain, and people only do that sometimes, and those that do are usually seen to be a bit stuffy and overprecious about their carpets.

According to the Greek side of my family, if you put your hand up palm-forward towards someone, which people in Britain or the USA might see as saying 'stop', in Greece people use it as a nasty gesture meaning 's**t in your face', although it's usually accompanied by those words, too (in Greek, of course).

Also, I don't know how many other countries do this, but in Britain, if we're about to cross the road and a car stops for us, we quickly put our hand up in a similar way as we cross, palm towards the driver, in order to say thank you. Drivers might do the same to other drivers that let them pass, although it'll be accompanied with a double flash of their lights in case they don't see the hand gesture.
