Ok i recently got the Marvel App, and i decided to read the Civil War comics, and i thoroughly enjoyed it. but then i wanted to go and read something else but then got stuck at how much stuff there was to read.

so i thought ok maybe i'll have much more luck with DC, as they recently rebooted the universe and i thought what better time to get into it when they reboot it, but even then i still ended up baffled.

Now my favourite heroes from Marvel

Captain America
Ironman,
The Avengers
X-Men
and i guess the Hulk

while DC

Batman,
Superman,
Wonderwoman,
Justice League

so my question i ask is where is a good starting point, do i read detective comics and action comics or read the batman and superman comics? and where the hell do i get a start in the Marvel universe?

Oh and yeah I'm from Australia. we don't have many comic book stores.

Just start somewhere and if you need to know something you can always Google it.

Since there is always lots of continuity in comics books you won't be able to read it all trough and a reboot often gets to a point where they become parallel universes.

Just start somewhere and continue from there, eventually you will become less baffled.

I have a similar question- Where the hell starts BATMAN? Not like the detective, but normal Batman as we know him now?

Go to a comic book store. Pick up a comic that looks kinda interesting. Read a couple pages. If it holds your interest, go nuts. It generally doesn't matter where in a specific storyline you pick up, but you can try to get in on the ground level, if you're feeling ambitious.

On the other hand, maybe you can go with a trade paperback of a big universe event. Personally, I started with a one-off story about the Joker, BUT I got really interested in comics when I picked up the trade of "Blackest Night".

Either method works, really. And of course, you can ask the nice comic store proprietor for suggestions.

The sad thing about my country is that we don't have that many (none actually) comics stores, so I buy comics in E-form/or ship it from other countries... the few comics that made it here are also pretty darn expensive. This kinda limits my ability to go in and just go nuts in a store, asking questions as I go :p

There are so many alternate timelines, reboots, spin-offs...
With franchise that massive it's best to start at any given point and simply move on. I'd try to read/collect comics with some famous names.

Batman ? I strongly advise to read "The Killing Joke", "No Man's land" saga, "The Dark Knight Returns" and "Kingdom Come". In that order.

Marvel ? Damn, it's complete madness for me. :)
I'd start with Wolverine - decent character, plenty of interesting comics. "Weapon X" is a good start. So is "Origin" tale.
"Deadpool" would be obvious choice as he is modern replacement for Spider-Man. Hilarious most of times.
And of course, "The Punisher". Marvel Knights series with Garth Ennis is a must.

"X-men" ? Leave all hope ye that come by this door. Almost every character at some point was dead, amnesiac, brainwashed, had its powers switched, disabled, enabled, changed from "hero" to villain and back. Also, there's plenty of backward writing, so suddenly out of nowhere some heroes are gay, their own mothers, children, clones. Insanity i'll say. :)
I'd follow Magneto and his adventures. It's disputable, but i think that this character is responsible for at least half of interesting turning points in history of both X-men and Marvel Universe. I strongly recommend "House of M" saga.

What do you mean? Because comics don't quite age the same way. There was the Golden Age Batman, first appearance in 1939.
Then there was Silver Age Batman,(which these "ages" involved a lot of comic characters, really). He didn't change much. Mostly the suit.
Modern Batman was retold majorly by Frank Miller and others. It was sometimes after 1986 or so.
If you are referring to Modern Batman, then Frank Miller's 'Year One' is basically the best well known origin story. They even have it made into an hour animated movie now. I thought it was good.

There was recently a total reboot of continuity in DC so ignore previous works and just try the reboot comics until your comfortable with all the characters.

At the moment you're in luck because both companies are at a jumping on point for certain titles.

I sugguest for DC start with the origin or year one comic of that superhero (Green Lantern Origin or Batman Year One) and also those well known story like Kingdom Come or The Dark Knight Return.

For Marvel I guess maybe the comics that follow up after Civil War or the other big arc story like Avenger Disassemble or House of M which happen before Civil War or Secret War or Siege that happen after Civil War.

If you are still confuse what going on or don't know about a character, that what Wikipedia and Comicvine are for.

Well...when they said "reboot", it seems a fair few of the writers thought that meant "go back to when nobody except straight white adolescents was supposed to like comics". I mean, people have long criticised comics on and off for being racist, sexist and generally crap, but the reboot seems to have really taken that to heart. :(

Secondly, they seem to have liked jumping into the beginning of long story arcs, even if they were good, nobody would know about it unless they stuck it out for a few months.
