Like the subject line says. Japanese music, please. Rock 'n' roll. No anime openings. The older the better. Don't shy away from new stuff if that's all you've got though. Between Springsteen and Guns 'N' Roses-level hardness, please.

I quite liked a bit of Miyavi back in the day. Here's a bit of a taste:

That's one kick-ass guitar opening there in What's My Name, he's real good.

Mucc's Gokusai album is pretty cool too, worth a look. If you want to go a little harder/more dramatic Alice Nine's 9 and GEMINI albums are worth checking out, maybe Abingdon Boys School's Teaching Materials album too.

That's all contemporary by the way. Old Japanese music I sadly know very little about, outside of the awesomeness that is taiko music. Might want to change that depending on what pops in this thread.

I'd recommend X Japan but they might be a bit too extreme for what you're after. They did a lot of ballad stuff though and to be honest Art of Life is a modern classic so I dunno.

Dahlia has some songs that have a more "hard rock ballad" vibe.

Do Visual Novels count? If so? Deardrops.

Absolutely. Deardrops.

The violin with the guitar? Wonderful.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnd for a little bit harder...

Well, obviously Maximum the Hormone:

And, obviously, BabyMetal:

I realize these are probably a bit too "hard"...but I love the guitar. ._.

Honestly, a lot of my Japanese music comes from anime, so I can't really help. It's gotten me to look further into a few bands though, like High and Mighty Color and nano.RIPE.

Kishida Kyoudan and the Akeboshi Rockets. They're modern style rock, so maybe not exactly what you wanted, but I fucking love this band. They did do a couple of anime openings, but they have plenty of their own stuff too. Here's a few of my favorites from them:

Since 90% of my music is japanese, I might as well chime in. (I'm just looking for an excuse to post music anyway)

Here's an alternate arrange of a BGM track from the visual novel Rewrite. The album art is not descriptive of its content.
The Falcom jdk Band is, in my opinion, one of the best instrumental bands out there. They are responsible for a ton of great game soundtracks.
I also have to join in on the Akeboshi Rockets train, they're awesome.
This one refuses to leave my ear, so here, you have it.
This is an absolute bliss to listen to, I love the emotion in the guitar. You'd do yourself a disservice by not listening to all of it.
And here's some Hitorie. I love their fast-paced guitar play.
I'll stop there, if I were to list all japanese rock groups that I like, it would just get so long it'd be silly.

I hope some of it is to your liking!

EDIT:
Ok, I have one more to add.

Heh...Oh, have I got something for you Queen...

Seikima II is my favorite J-Metal band at the moment. They've been around for at least 25 years but I don't think they're active at the moment. A few years ago, they released a couple of best-of CDs but remixed their tracks by changing the lyrics into English. I don't know if they've toured in the US but they've done Latin American tours in the past.

After Malice Mizer split up, the guitarist Mana set up a new project known as Moi Dix Mois. It had a heavier sound than Malice Mizer ever did. Like his previous band, Moi Dix Mois saw multiple vocalists come and go. As far as I'm aware they're currently inactive and rumors of a Malice Mizer reunion are still floating around every so often though I don't think anything has materialized with that...Mana is probably busy with his clothing line at the moment.

Detroit Metal City is to Japan what Dethklok is to the US...only the anime they originated from only lasted a few episodes. Dir en Grey recently released a new CD and tour regularly but not outside of Japan...not anymore anyway. They came to the US as part of the Family Values Tour in the mid-2000's but I don't think they've been back since. The Gazette is a band I'm not a hundred-percent sure of...they may be touring, they may be active...I'm just not sure.

I dunno, outside of anime, this is about it:
<youtube=Z8N5kv0RLXI>

No idea if it's anime related, but it's been a favorite of mine a while.

Maybe it's a bit out of the realm of rock, though? I'unno.

I dont know if it'll be to your taste's since that sort of thing is 100% subjective, but onmyouza may be worth a shot for you, they are probably more metal than rock but as i said could be worth a go.

There's always the 5 6 7 8s, as seen in Kill Bill. A very 70s surf rock style. I'd link something, but i'm on my phone and lazy.

How about some Tokyo Jihen?

Their stuff is hard to find on youtube, but you can find a lot of their live performances.

Maybe not exactly what you're looking for, but still something worth checking out.

I'm tempted to make a snarky comment how needing Japanese rock is akin to needing Italian sushi, but instead I'll just leave the best.
I have a wonderful penis
There is hair on my balls
Is that the sound of a baby monkey?
No! Ninjas are here!

Hey hey let's go! Getting in a fight!
The important thing is to protect my balls!
I am badass, so let's fighting...
Let's fighting love! Let's fighting love!

This song is a little stupid
It doesn't make any sense
English is all fucked up
But that's okay, we do it all the time

Hey hey let's go! Getting in a fight!
The important thing is to protect my balls!
I am badass, so let's fighting...
Let's fighting love! Let's fighting love!
Rock on.

Well, outside of Maximum The Hormone, Man With A Mission, and High and Mighty Color, there's Galneryus:
That's all I got...

*1 hour later*

Oh... There's also L'Arc-en-Ciel...
"Technically" the first Japanese band I followed, I guess...
