I love FF VII, VII, X (I even enjoyed X-2. Shut up, I did), and XII.

I've tried playing the older FF titles but they all take place in these fantasy lands with castles and kings sending you on quests and junk. At least as far as I can tell. Problem is, these settings have never ever appealed to me. It's the same reason I can't play The Elder Scrolls but love Fallout 3. The typical fantasy setting does not appeal.

So anyway, I was hoping some of you would know of titles I'm unaware of.

I'll take suggestions for GBA, PS2, and PS3. If such things exist for a crappy Walmart PC then I'll give those a shot. I do know about the Persona series but they're generally pretty expensive even on PS2 and I'd hate to blow that much on something I don't know for sure I'd like.

Well I was about to suggest Final Fantasy IX, but considering that game does sort of have a more medieval setting, I guess it won't appeal to you. Still, I feel you should at least watch some videos of the game on Youtube to see if you'd like it or not. It's a fantastic game in my opinion.

As for the PS2, I would suggest Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2. Both are really good games in my opinion.

Also, if you ever get yourself a Wii, get Xenoblade Chronicles. Also a very good JRPG. Plus, The Last Story comes out in just a couple of weeks here in America, so that's always nice.

I despised the art style in IX, I'm sure the game underneath is solid but I just couldn't get past the art.

I never played 6 but I was going to give it a shot.

Kingdom Hearts also did not appeal. I got into the genre via FFVII and I like the turn based style. Kingdom Hearts just comes across as button mashery to me.

I would suggest forking over the $$ for Persona 4 to be honest, it sounds like that game would be right up your alley. Urban fantasy setting (no high fantasy stuff there), and the gameplay is somewhat similar to FFX, which I assume you love based on your display picture, so I'd check it out!

Otherwise maybe you could look into Rogue Galaxy, Lucifers Call/Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga or even maybe Valkyria Chronicles (PS3), which is more Strategy game with RPG elements in it, but its really quite good in my opinion, worth looking into since it's pretty cheap these days.

Gotta recommend my favorite game of all time: Persona 4.

Also, give Shin Megami Tensie:Nocturne a try

I recommend MOST Shin Megami Tensei games, especially Persona. I also recommend Shadow Madness and Xenogears.

I am in exactly the same boat as you. There is just one problem. It does not exsist. I have been unable to find a JRPG that I love as much as FF VII-X, 9 is the best, I saw your other post about disliking the art style and I understand but I had to say it :), I have found only one JRPG I liked as much as them and it is for the 360 and it's setting is the Industrial Revolution with magic instead of steam power.

Oh my god yes! 1 MILLION TIMES YES!

This game is absolutely freaking amazing. It has a "turn-based" system, but it's just an absolute blast to fight stuff in that game.

I will admit that the learning curve might be slightly steep (personally I didn't have much problems) and there are times where the game can get a bit grindy at certain points (not a minus for me since the combat was so enjoyable).

However, the characters and the weird story were just so damn enjoyable. Also, the game has one of my favorite features ever, being able to customize the appearance of a character without it having any effect on the statistics of that character/how they do in actual combat. It seems like a small thing, but changing the outfits of characters actually affected how I viewed them since the changes in costume apply to cut-scenes as well as battle.

At the very least you have to take a look at this game. :D

Legend of Dragoon. It gets a lot of people claiming it's a FF ripoff. It's a good game though.

I'd say give Metal Saga for the PS2 a whirl, which is set in an interesting future.

Zoids Saga (GBA) takes place in a similar era.

Then there are the Shadow Hearts (PS2) games which take place in the early 1900s.

Wild Arms 3 (PS2) had a western aesthetic.

Also if you don't have anything against SRPGs, Front Mission 4(PS2) might deserve a look.

Since you liked FFX I'd go with Digital Devil Saga,it's basically FFX if FFX was badass, had more cannibalism, and was running on Hindu philosophy.

Also those people recommending the other SMT games are very right and you should listen to them.

VI is more of a steampunk setting, so I'd recommend it if you haven't tried it already.

Other than that...

Eh. The FF series is in a league of its own, but games like Shadow Hearts and the MegaTen series are also fantastic.

EDIT: Also, Persona is NOT expensive. Both P3:FES and P4 are $20 on Amazon, since Atlus reprinted them.

I also recommend the Persona games and Shadow hearts from the new world.
What this guy said.

Resonance of Fate puts you in an environment that has a certain dystopian, slightly futuristic feel to it, but combined with a heavy dose of steampunk (which is a rare occasion, since steampunk is most often combined with a more Victorian setting). The combat system is also something quite unique - not in the least because all staffs and swords have been replace by handguns, submachine guns and grenades.

The Persona games (and pretty much all Megami Tensei titles) have a sort of present day/near future vibe going on revolving about the occult and sometimes a bit of the good ol' post-apocalyptic stuff.

However, I do not concur with his opinion about Shadow Hearts: From The New World. At all. I've played the entire trilogy (and the original Koudelka of which this series is a spin-off) and I found it to be the most disappointing closure to a trilogy ever. Seek out Shadow Hearts: Covenant instead (I would also recommend the original Shadow Hearts, but the combat system is underdeveloped and the graphics are simply ghastly - good music and story though).

From The New World just doesn't have that much going for a plot. Also, where the previous installments managed to combine a deep, heartfelt story with some more awkward situations and snarky humor, this title places too much emphasis on the constantly present silliness and just doesn't take itself seriously. The combat hasn't evolved since the latest installment and the Stellar Chart system is a step back from the Key of Solomon mechanic. The game only features a handful of fusions as opposed to the 20+ fusions from Covenant and the game features the worst vampire character of the series. Actually, I think it just has the worst cast in general of the entire series. Somehow, even the overall presentation feels a lot more soulless than the previous ones.

They still have Yoshitaka Hirota doing most of the music (which is awesome), but that' it.

Some other recommendations:
- Valkyria Chronicles (It's something different, maybe watch a video first and then decide.)
- Xenogears and the Xenosaga trilogy (They have a futuristic tone going on.)
- The Star Ocean series (Space travel and stuff like that, also visiting backwater planets.)
- Chrono Trigger (Okay, you'll visit some castles, but you'll also visit a post-apocalyptic wasteland and such.)

So you want neat worlds eh? No traditional fantasy? Hmmm...
Shadow Hearts: Covenant is definitely a good call... takes place in WW1 Europe
Xenosaga 1 and 3 (Skip 2, just read a summary or something) take place in a full on Sci-Fi Setting.
Persona 3&4, Digital Devil Saga 1&2 The Persona Games take place in Modern Japan and Digital Devil Saga takes place in a crazy post apocalyptic future.

Fallout 3 has you born on screen and has an all around fantastic introduction to the world you'll be a part of. New Vegas chucks you into a desert and says good luck. It didn't grip me the way 3 did.

I did try Resonance on the 360 and just couldn't be bothered to even finish the tutorial. It did sound like a really interesting game though so I may give it another go.

And I'll definitely look into the Shin Megami/Persona games. Thanks guys.
