If your into crime dramas

The Shield: a show that follows the life primarily of one corrupt cop who leads a whole team of other corrupt cops its a really good show that shows the downward spiral as these guys get in deeper and deeper the belly of the criminal beast. It also follows two homicide detectives who are great characters and a young Latino police captain who is trying graduate to political office.

Oz: a prison drama that follows the lives of various prisoners in a new experimental facility within a older prison. Although i hope you have strong stomach because there is alot of rape, male nudity, and brutality in this show but it is a very good drama after you clear the first seasons predictable arc.

For those of you that liked IT crowd and the mighty boosh, there's a show on neflix called
"Snuff Box", which might amuse you. Be warned, the clip I've included features the concept of rape
for the purpose of comedy.

Rome

It's no I, Claudius, but it is definitely a worthy disciple. A historic drama depicting a fairly accurate look at the lifestyles of the plebs and the patricians, with a heavy focus on Caesar's conquest of the Gauls, all the way up to the defeat of Marc Antony and the formation of The Roman Empire, mostly told from the point-of-views of two soldiers who are two of the biggest badasses to ever be in the same show together. If you're a history buff, you'll get a lot out of this show, but don't feel like you need to be fluent in Roman history to understand it, it works as a periodic drama as well.
Loved that show. However, I will also recommend its polar opposite, "Spartacus: Blood and Sand".

You see, everything about "Rome" screams "classy": Highly talented actors, amazing sets, great dialogue. However, the action kind of has to take a back seat - we are told about all these grand battles happening, but that's it - we just hear in detail about how Caesar brilliantly outflanks Pompey and breaks a far superior force, as if following the motto "Tell, don't show" (however, it is still great to see relatively large numbers of extras as legionaries wearing the correct equipment for the time period, i.e. chainmail, with the more well-known Lorica segmentata first appearing in limited numbers during the time of Augustus).

"Spartacus: Blood and Sand" goes in exactly the opposite direction - starting with the fact that it was shot in Zealand, i.e. on the opposite side of the globe from Italy (where "Rome" was shot), meaning they actually had to hire people of Maori descent to play all the Middle Eastern characters. And no, they don't really make use of the fastastic NZ landscape either, since almost the whole first season was shot on a soundstage. The acting also tends to be "hit and miss" - while John Hannah is absolutely brilliant as the owner of the gladiator stable, the other characters don't exactly pull off convincing Romans (or slaves from the provinces). However, the show is simply a hoot to watch, and much of that can be attributed to the fight scenes. Yes, they are completely implausible (at the rate at which gladiators get decapitated or otherwise mutilated, one can only wonder how there can be "veteran" gladiators, or how the gladiator stables can operate at a profit), but oh so much fun to watch, as are John Hannah's temper tantrum's (really, the show should have been about this guy in the first place). Also, if you thought HBO's shows featured excessively gratuitous nudity, Spartacus will blow your mind - as a rule of thumb, if there's a female character, then you *will* get to see her topless. If there ever was a show that fit the definition of "guilty pleasure", it's this one.

Babylon 5 (season 1 and 5 are crap, but everything in between is gold)
Season 5 wasn't that bad, its just that they couldn't really top the Shadow war followed by the war for Earth. It was basically used to tie up loose ends, there were some decent episodes and the final episode will make me shed some tears every freaking time.

I only watch powerful gritty dramas. If I'm going to watch something for several years (or for months at a time if it's already aired), then it better be good. It better have awesome writing and great characters.

For me, that usually means I can't watch most network series..

So, pretty much just HBO stuff.

That list is short and it is:

The Sopranos
Oz
The Wire

Oz being my personal favorite.. but I could watch any of those shows from beginning to end at any time.

The whole Byron storyline was terrible and i hate what they did with Lyta, and i'm sure they would have added the last episode to season 4 if there was no 5

Misfits: If you want a black comedy about Teens being given superpowers and then messing up repeatedly!
Merlin: a look at Merlin's late teen years as he learns magic and helps Arther establish camelot. Sort of like Smallvile with magic.
Gavin and Stacey:Best modern sitcom ever!

All I can think of. At any rate.

One of my favorite concepts from the show:
The power of Lactokinesis (i.e. psychokinetic control over dairy products)

Not only do I applaud the creators for coming up with something so brilliantly outlandish, but also how they managed to turn it into one of the most frightening powers that appear on the show.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
I was just talking to a friend of mine earlier today who said that he thought all animé was terrible until his roommate got him to watch this. Now, he's catching up on Death Note, which I haven't seen, but I've started reading the manga and have been thoroughly hooked.

Generator Rex
Created by a group called "Man of Action", who gained fame from Ben 10, this series got a bit deeper in its later seasons and has been an awesomely-fresh take on the "Hero works with team to fight giant monsters everywhere" formula.

Doctor Who
It's British and it's the longest-running sci-fi series ever. Also, it's BRITISH.

Walker, Texas Ranger
Because, Chuck Norris stars in it.

Avatar: The Last Airbender and Avatar: The Legend of Korra
Not to be confused with "Blue Pocahontas in Space".

Dan vs.
A rather politically-incorrect series about a guy who wants revenge on EVERYTHING.
(Wow, I actually gave an actual synopsis this time.)

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
It's a rather unconventional show that doesn't have a problem with putting good writing and abundant cheerfulness together, soon followed by major characters beating the crap out of a massive horde on shape-shifting monsters.
You have a Scootaloo avatar. Never mind...

I'll throw my two cents in and say what Pohaturon said, but the opposite. Pacific was godawful compared to Band of Brothers, and doesn't deserve to be anywhere even close to the same lists.

OT: I would recommend shows for you, but you didn't say please. Rookie error.

BBC's Sherlock is fun.
The BSG remake.
If you like anime, watch Paranoia Agent is fucking incredible.
King of the Hill.
American Dad is good and thankfully not much like Family Guy.
Bob's Burgers is really good.
Daria.
The Average Show, I think it's called. With a bird and a raccoon doing weird shit to a gumball machine man.
There's a series starring Henry the 8th that was very good.

I don't think I have much else. I hate cable TV, so I just watch things on Netflix to avoid sitting through the commercials and just deciding what I want to see.

Can't believe no one has said Castle. It strikes a brilliant balance of humour and drama, with Nathan Fillion as a Writer turned civilian consultant for an NYPD homicide squad. It is amazing.

I also agrre with Firefly, Community and Sherlock.

Boardwalk Empire has some pacing issues, it can feel very drawn out with nothing of importance actually happening, but it's worth it for the superb characters and acting. Not to mention the sets, costumes and music (excluding the awful intro.) Steve Buscemi is the only A-list actor but others are just as capable, if not more. Since it's set in the 1920s, all real-life figures you'd expect in a bootlegging drama are there such as Al Capone, played by Stephen Graham, and 'Lucky' Luciano, played by Vincent Piazza. My favourite character, however, is one that isn't based on a real-life figure as far as I know. His name is Richard Harrow, a veteran of WWI and former sharpshooter. I won't say anything more!

Archer
American Dad
Bob's Burgers (a very weird and funny--And I grew up on Family Guy)
Boondocks (very funny, and it has a lot to say about society--getting a little dated now though)
Code Monkeys (you can't call yourself a gamer without watching this, only two seasons quick to watch)
Cleveland Show/Family Guy/Simpsons (not sure if you're including this)
Community (the previous seasons are great, and it may come back one day-- five seasons and a movie)
Workaholics
Futurama (the origianl series was amazing. The new stuff is a little hit-and-miss, but the most recent season is great)

Naruto (over half way through)
Code Geass (in progress)
Trigun
Squid Girl
Full Metal Alchemist (/Brotherhood)
Fist of the North Star
High School of the Dead
Bleach
Bible Black

Can people help me out with two others? I forgot their names.
The really popular one with the evil book in the high school(?).
The other one I want to say is a .//hack, but it's about time travel or something. It's been advertised on here before.
