Hopefully, this Christmas I get an Organization XIII coat/cloak/hoodie/robe thing. That's like 15 costumes in one. I'd be set for life.

Okay, so I have exactly one week before this cosplay thing I was invited to. I'm broke. I really want to dress up as a character I know about. But I also don't want to be L or Light from DeathNote (because they're too original and I like shoes). At this point I don't care what gender the character is. I need someone I can become straight out of my closet. I have tons of different types of black clothes (from plain dresses to pants suits) and accessories I didn't just want to be a generic Loli but I will if I have to. Thoughts?

TL:DR: Quick, easy, no money required cosplay ideas, please!
So, you are female? I still have no idea how tall or short you are. Considering how it's still too risqué to go blackface then it's probably best to expand on appearance you have already. My brother went as Mr T in full black face but I think it would have worked better if my brother had naturally black skin, you know?

My opinion on cosplay is you either go 100% or you don't do it at all. Cosplay demands a certain amount of effort otherwise it is just depressing for everyone else at the event, they feel like they've come to some 2nd rate gathering.

Don't cosplay for the sake of trying. Cosplay for the sake of playing a fitting tribute to a character. This is why it's important to have a good costume, otherwise you are going to show your character in a bad light.

So the best cosplay is something you are interested in, what characters interest you?

But that's just my opinion. I don't want you to feel pressured to cosplay if you either can't afford it or honestly don't have the inspiration.

I'm gonna have to pull a Professor Oak here and ask, for the sake of cosplaying, are you male or female? I know you said gender doesn't really matter in this case, but that can only go so far.

All things considered...uh, maybe just wear a tatty pink dress, slap on some eyeshadow, fashion something that looks like a big needle and call yourself a little sister?

Edit: Okay, because I'm such a nice guy I'm going to give an informed suggestion based off your actual appearance (you can thank my stalker-like forum searching abilities). Loren Cehack from Turn-A Gundam. Here's some happy-snaps for a cosplay desiring escapist chap...ette (I'm too fond of rhyming):

and many more at this link (best not Google Image the character, you'll get pages of hentai 0_0).

As for the gender of the character, I believe it's male but on an occasion or two he's had to cross-dress for some reason (hence the picture of him in the dress...I've never seen this anime personally).

I am a girl. I am black. Medium skin tone. But I don't feel that should limit me. About 5'6 medium/average build. Round face pointy chin big eyes small nose. idk. I really want to cosplay because I've always wanted to but had felt really discouraged because most characters don't look like me so I never thought to buy a costume. I got a little confidence but now I'm stuck in a rut.

I am a bit picky with my anime/games and that has limited me. But I'm interested in:
Code Geass
Darker Than Black
Devil May Cry(that counts)
DeathNote(though I didn't complete it)
Kingdom Hearts
Final Fantasy X and XIII

All good for cosplay ideas...if you have time and money. I guess I'm stuck with Loli. :p

As for what I'm working with:
Tons of frilly black shirts
" " white shirts
Black tutu
Knee high black boots/ gray fur at the top
black gray striped fingerless gloves
tons of black headbands
black wig...though I really can use my own hair
I have lots of Chuck's and pairs of black pants

Grr...I'm stuck with loli, I suppose it's the only thing that would look nice. :p

Thank you, that was really thoughtful and kind. I'm gonna have to look into this one for another time. :)

You seem to have a lot of options, you've got those great Japanese games, those have such elaborate and bohemian outfits and that's not even getting to the extraordinary hair.

I'd go with Trish from Devil May cry as the black corset and jeans are distinct and you did say you have tons of different types of black clothes. But the hair really is the iconic piece that if you could get just that one item you'd nail the look in one one go. We are talking one big wig here, something that'll go down to your waistline.

If you could somehow get hair that was ridiculously long, that was down to your ankles I think that would make the character more recognisable.

Unfortunately I have no idea how to do that unless you happened to have a wig that big. I wouldn't know how to make one or anything.

On the other hand final fantasy and kingdom hearts costumes are so intricate and unique you could spend an age and fortune replicating them. I think Trish in your best bet in terms of convenience vs iconography.

You could do Dr.Death, Mr. Despairs brother from Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei All you need some cheap dress clothes you could probably find at a goodwill or someplace of the sort. For mannerisms just overreact to people saying your name and bang your head against the wall. If you need help watch the 6th episode of Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei. Hope this help becasue if not I've got nothing.

Go as one of the Homunculi from Full Metal Alchemist. They all wear black, and even though they are all pale white, I've seen black people go as them. Lust is the most awesome (and only female) one, so you might want to go as her.

I cosplayed as Greed earlier this year. Later this year I'm cosplaying as Natsu from Fairy Tail. No shirt FTW! (you might want to check out the females from Fairy Tail, they have some interesting cosplays. If that doesn't suit you a lot of the females in Bleach only wear black and white).

You could try to look like this lovely... person.

But more seriously, someone mentioned Trish from DMC. That sounds like a neat idea. Or anyone from Devil May Cry for that matter. Their outfits aren't particularly complex.
