I need to have my computer protected against viruses and malware and other unpleasant stuff. Care to recommend anything? I don't mind paying for it, though I certainly don't mind getting it for free either.

Kaspersky has never failed me, I strongly recommend them.

http://www.kaspersky.com/

You will have to pay for their antivirus products but its very much worth it if you ask me. There are probably some free ones out there that do a decent job but if you don't mind paying what is really quite a modest price, you can't go wrong with Kaspersky. I've used them for the last 3 years and have had absolutely no troubles with viruses and the like.

Free stuff:

Microsoft Security Essentials - haven't used it but if you have a registered copy of Windows (I think that was the requirement...so that's all Windows) you can get it straight from Microsoft. What I do know is that it's light and it has been recommended by a lot of people I trust the judgement of.

Avast! - What I'm currently using on my Windows. I've used it for a few years now and it works.

Avira Antivir - what I used before Avast! - it was all right the only slightly annoying thing was that it would occasionally pop up with an ad for the full version. Never bothered me though.

AVG - haven't used it but I believe it's slightly easier to operate. Or not, I dunno - I've seen it come pre-installed with some PCs I also usually install it for other people if they are clueless to what they want.

The last three here also have a paid version with extra features. I didn't really find most of them worth it for a home user, though.

If I'd go for a paid solution, I'd go for NOD32 - I've used it in the past and it was satisfactory.

Kaspersky is the ultimate solution, though. For a home user it might be an overkill but it works and it works really well. I think it's a bit pricey though, at least compared with the others.

i Will second Avast! been using it for years and never had a major virus attack there is a free version (just antivirus i use this one) but you can pay and get other stuff like firewall etc. I used also AVG back when i was using a 32bit computer and i never had any major problems with viruses when i had that protection either.

Only paid one i have used is Norton and it wasn't a good experience i had to reformat my pc roughly every month due to nasty virus attacks. This was a very long time ago when i used it (looking back to 2005 when XP was the norm) and maybe they have cleaned up there act.

You got to keep your system up to specs. Feed it an orange, or put some yoghurt in the disc drive.
And remember, plenty of fresh air and sunshine. That keeps a healthy computer.

I've used the free version of Avira Antivirus for the last 5 years or more and I never had any issues. Although be aware that the free version does pop up a "buy me" window at times, but I've gotten so used to it I don't even notice it anymore.

If you have Windows 8, the embedded security does a decent job, and as long as you're smart you shouldn't have a problem.

Otherwise, I've used AVG and Avast before. Both were satisfactory. Avast was maybe a little lighter resource-wise, but I don't know how it is right now, it's been years.

Generally though, if you're smart with your browsing you shouldn't really need a heavy anti-virus.

I use Avast! as well. It's pretty nice for a free program.

For malware scans, I use Malwarebytes, Emisoft Anti-Malware picks up what MB misses.

Microsoft Security Essentials.

Efficient, unobtrusive, and all-around remarkable.

Advanced System Care with Antivirus

It isn't free, but it's everything your computer needs, system monitoring and maintainance, malware protection, antivirus and a bunch of other tools that are all awesome.

edit: It's called Advanced SystemCare Ultimate now.

Been using Avast! for about 8 years now and it's been working out great.
Anything that've gotten past it have been caught by it's bootscan so far.

Like a lot of people are saying Microsoft security essentials or Avast.

Its what I used to put on computers when I worked clearing off viruses on peoples computers and replacing there anti-virus systems which were almost always Norton, -shivers- never get Norton.

Ubuntu works great.

Other than that Microsoft security essentials is actually quite good and you can turn it off unlike some other anti-virus programs...

I like Avast! so much that I put a business level version in at work. Their free product is what I recommend to anybody who asks. The others mentioned are also good and you can't really go wrong with any of them.

Microsoft Security will probably do a decent job. But I like to use Kaspersky. I used to use Norton, and it generally did pretty good (although a few trojans slipped through), but it was a system resource hog. Kaspersky doesn't seem use up my system resources too much.

Kaspersky's not that expensive either.

Linux.

...Okay, smartass answer aside, I say that Microsoft Security Essentials should do the job just fine. I also advocate Kapersky, but I haven't used them enough to get a feel for how well it does as I don't really use an antivirus. =P

I've been using Avast (free edition) ever since I got this laptop. Hasn't failed me once.

Although I don't really go to shady sites/put myself in potential virus situations so you should take my recommendation with a grain of salt.

I don't mind being the third to say that running Linux is the best antivirus... Windows has always been a fragile little bird, expect it to die once every couple of years.

For my Windows installations, I use AVG Free, because it's sitting highest in the ratings at the moment.
But again, I expect said installations to shit themselves and die every two years or so.
