A ward is a barrier. A warden is one who maintains that barrier. Though it is often associated with prisons, it does not directly refer to imprisonment, merely separation. In oversimplified prison terms: the warden maintains the walls, the guards maintain imprisonment.

However, the "peacekeeper" (<--) definition opens up some other possibilities: *cough, cough*Karas*cough*

Police/Patrol
Officer/Protector
Enforcer
Responder
Pacifist/ier
Tender (caretaker not currency)
Repel (-er/-ent/-ist/-ier)

and a few more mystical-ish words:
Animist (referring to expert on anima/animus, not animal)
Veil (-keeper, -tender, etc.)

Veil Would be a good name for who they work for.

You could always go with Witcher, but maybe the fact that Geralt has some special powers would be a disqualifier. Dunno what exactly you're looking for, but this thread reminded me of The Witcher 1 and 2.

I just finished The Witcher, which is a game where you fight spirits and monsters, so I'm going to go with witcher.

Also it appears that some people here don't seem to know what a necromancer is.

I need a word for people who fight spirits/monsters

BESIDES exorcist...

If you have more than one idea, thatd be awesome

Also think as if the word is used as to describe a profession
Ghostbuster
Ghosttouched
ethreal stalker
Grim Enforcer (finds people who try to cheat death through unlife)
Paranormal Exterminator
Helsing's Guard (monster slayers)
Angels( of death, vengeance, retribution)
Cryptozoologist (studiest mythical beast, yeti, loch ness, etc..)
MIB (aliens)
Rangers (in D&D, favored enemy: undead, incorpreal)

I might think of some more...

EDIT:

reapers

oh, and ghost could be ethreal OR astral, depending on the writers view point, of the level of death.

Other stuff to think about:
Is the word you need a class or rank in a heirarchy?
Does this "class" and the reaper/s have a working relationship? are they complimentary, supplemental, antagonistic?
What do you call the people they work for? would this name complement them?
What types of abilities do they use and would the name reflect that? (feel free to use broad terms, but not too broad, like "magic")
Do they use a particular tool that may be iconic or related to their class?
Are they required to be secretive/hidden? do others know about them?
Do you want the word to be a real word or made-up/fantastical-sounding?

PS: Thesaurus is your friend. Look up something, click around and see where the words take you.
If all else fails, grab a handful of Scrabble tiles and use them to make a word (adding vowels if needed). heh.
