I am unemployed. Well, I've been effectively unemployed for almost two weeks now.

Let's rewind.

I got this job at the bakery in July. The pay was minimum wage (as is to be expected these days) but the hours were good. More good news was that my friends work there as well and my other coworkers are decent. The job itself was amazingly easy if repetitive and the money kept coming in.

Two months ago my hours were cut in half. I was concerned but I kept the job because I couldn't find another one. Two weeks later my hours were cut again until I only had 8 hours a week. I could barely pay my bills for January and I had to borrow some money from my parents to pay for February's bills. The last week of February I had only 4 hours. Same with the first week of March. This week I have had no hours and none next week either.

Why the pay cuts? It's bullshit. Our store's profits have gone up in the last five months. Today I just talked with my department manager and asked about the hours. She can't give me any, the managers above her are cutting even more hours. She's pretty pissed too, having taken cuts to her "guaranteed" 30 hours of work.

So I quit. Just half an hour ago. I did it calmly and politely with my department manager. This Saturday I come back with my apron and my discount card. This is the first time I've ever quit a job I don't hate. It feels bad but my hard work has been rewarded with cut hours and now I'm not getting paid at all. I'm effectively a name on a list now so I'm pulling out now and spending all of my time looking for new work. When I did quit, I did it in front of a union rep so maybe the managers will get in some shit. Who knows, who cares.

I've had it better than others but I've never had to type up a two weeks notice before. How many jobs have you quit? Were they under similar circumstances? I like my immediate boss but it's pretty clear the store managers don't really care about their employees having financial needs.

I'm just disgusted. Also hey, my first semi-rant post on the Escapist. How about that...

I've quit quite a few jobs in my time, mostly for a reason though. I've quit because I was moving away, found a better job or was about to be fired mostly.

I've been employed at a restaurant when it went bankrupt though, not fun but I don't blame my employers for it. The restaurant was their life and it really was sad to see their family go through such a difficult time.

The important thing to remember is that work isn't a one-sided thing, you deserve the money you work for and if they are cutting your hours you're fully in your right to quit. Worry about your own bills and let them deal with theirs.

How did you get such an awesome bakery job though? I thought most baking happened very early in the morning. (maybe that's just bread?)

I've quit several jobs, most I don't remember why because its part and parcel of the corporate ladder, one that does stick out in my mind (like that hot vixen we've all dated that we can't get out of our heads*) was Project Accountancy in the Gaming industry where while I was promoted with each new promotion came the cost of my free will within what I was allowed to do as an Employee such as creating provision accounts for writing off, my authority to my team, my working hours changing from flexi to fixed, not being able to accept gifts for reaching targets...

...and to the company hiring an outside auditing team for 6 months to come up with a mission objective for me and my team (even though we were a profit making department thanks to our work ethics) that we would have to follow, on the day of the auditing team objective deadline, I handed in my resignation.... one of the auditors actually swore, and jokes on them I was the only one that new how to do month end because another auditor had dicked about with our systems and couldn't revert it back

OT: I quit my job at an amusement park about a year ago because my transportation (public transit) wasn't reliable enough for me to continue commuting there. I would almost always arrive late, no matter how early the bus left. Shame, because I really liked the place, too.

I've quit three jobs.

When I had my first adult psychotic break and accompanying "nervous breakdown," I was working two jobs and my shrink told me that I probably needed to be working none, so I quit. One was very understanding, my immediate supervisor at the other one (whom I'd always gotten along with very well, so I'm not sure what this was all about) threw an absolute fit about it and basically told me that I should get over myself and keep coming to work because I was inconveniencing him. Due to the things I said, I'm pretty sure I'm not rehire-able there.

The other one was just a mess. I'd worked there for over 5 years and our area's supervisor had *always* had a problem with me. She tried to block my being hired and then she looked for every excuse to jump my ass and write me up. Her higher ups kept promoting me and that infuriated her. So, one day, I injured myself on the job.. not a serious injury, but I needed medical attention.. and she went completely apeshit trying to prove that I'd intentionally done it to myself to.. well, I don't know to what end, really.. I didn't miss any work except the couple of hours I was at the emergency room getting sorted. So, long story short, I was suspended "pending review of security tapes" (there were none in the area I was injured) and so I just said "fuck it" and quit before they could fire me over BS.

I read the title and thought you were quitting The Escapist, which would have sucked.

On topic now: I've quit 3 jobs. First job was awesome, and is still the most fun I've ever had at a job, and the best coworkers I've ever had....unfortunately it was at a Pizza place with an owner who couldn't run the place and was for barely minimum wage.

My second job I quit was because the management was way too overbearing for lifeguarding a 4ft deep pool and a 6 lane lap pool.

The final job, was out of time. I had classes and a different job that got in the way of it

That sucks but if you did a good enough job and the department manager liked you enough you can use her as a reference. That helps a lot in getting a new job. Also don't forget to list everything you can on a new resume. Things like you have handled money, you dealt with people so you have good social skills. Think of everything you can and then list them in such a way that they appeal to the widest sense possiple. The more people think you can do, the more likely you are to get the job,

Heh, that just means you complain a lot less than the average bear Escapist. I seem to have a rant post once a month

I quit my last job because I had just gotten back from vacation and my manager was being fired. As a result of his firing, every other person at the store decided to quit (we were all friends with the manager before being hired). Since I would be working with a new manager, would have to help fix the shitty state that the store was in, and would be working with a bunch of noobs that I'd have to train, as WELL as catch up with the school that I had miss... I decided to quit as well and extend my holiday. I don't really miss the job, there was a lot of problems I had with it even before my vacation. I felt kind of bad for the new manager since she would have no experienced people to fall back on, but I blame the greater company for not giving any of us an incentive to stay.

I quit McDonald's last year. I'm in a fortunate situation, I started when I was 16 and I'm in college and living at home so I wasn't in desperate need of money but meh it was nice being able to buy random shit that you want.

I hated the job though, was given 6am starts which was ridicuolous and I quit after a couple of months. All of the managers thought they were amazing because they finally had a bit of power over someone and just gave everyone shit for no reason. I quit after 6 or 7 months and never regretted it, I'm grateful I'm in a position where I didn't have to rely on a job at McDonald's. But yeah McDonald's sucks, don't get a job there if you can avoid it

though i would have been about my hours when they dipped below what i needed to pay my bills i do not like having to get money from some one else to pay MY bills, it rubs me all kinds of the wrong way

I've quit one job before, but that was only because I managed to find a better one somewhere else (where I currently am).

Although I need to start looking for another job. While this one gives me slightly more hours they keep putting me off getting a full time one so I guess I'll start to look elsewhere.

I've seen something similar happen to my dad TWICE...So I know how bad it sucks. Good luck in the future, and I hope that those managers get what's coming to 'em.

i left my job due to my manager having a go at other employee's and me, she once left me by myself and told me to serve customers in rush hour, with one person making burger. while she went to go have a smoke break [which your not allowed to have one].

when i complained the Head manager pretty much said 'well ive never seen her act this way.' so she got away with it. even when i had 5 signatures by other employee's.

I've quit two jobs, but only because I've moved on to better things. I quit being a small time waitress to quit being a small time retail assistant, to stay being an office wench as I am now.
