It was the first volume of Fullmetal Alchemist and I really enjoyed it, I liked the story and the two protagonists as well as the whole concept of alchemy. It dipped in chapters 3 & 4 which I thought were just there to show off Edward and Alphonse's combat prowess and intelligence but overall it was a good solid read and I'll look to pick up the next volume.

I would read Deathnote if you want a good manga. Only read as far as chapter seven then read the very ending it gets kinda bad between there.

also XXXholic is a good read as well

I would recommend One Piece, Ouran High School Host Club, +Anima and Rurouni Kenshin.

'Cause they're the only ones I've read. :p

Now that sounds like the kind of manga I could get into.
Its not what you think.
It is in my mind it is.
It really isn't. It was written by CLAMP, which is about as far from what you're thinking as is humanly possible.

I agree that the second arc isn't nearly as good as the first, but the ending will make absolutely no sense if he skips ahead to it.

Fair enough. I could have told him to watch the movie instead. Then he would be really confused.

Ahhh! Japan! :hides:
Japan is coming for you! Not the Japanese, but the country itself! There is nowhere to hide! Exclamation Points!!!!!

If you want to get further into manga, don't waste your time reading multiple Shonen Jump series. Aside from Deathnote, they are all the same, with the only things changing being the characters and the method of how they save the world. If you read more than one, then you're really just wasting time because you will be able to figure ouy exactly how everything will turn out.

The Jump series' everyone's going on about right now are Naruto and Bleach. Dragon Ball Z is the classic, but is really long. It's not that any of them are bad, per say, but once you've read one, you've read them all.

Personally, I would recommend FLCL, Cowboy Beebop, or Nausica, since everybody seems to be going with more mainsteam titles.

Yet oddly enough it is classed as Seinen Manga on any of the sites i go on to read it.

death note, bleach, and fullmetal alchemist are the best.
You forgot the following:

Eden
Monster
Azumangah Daioh/Yotsuba&! (both by the same creator)
Great Teacher Onizuka (already mentioned)
Basilisk
Blame!
Genshiken
Hellsing

:)

Have I missed any? Most likely, but all of the above are worth a look in my opinion.

I must say Dragon Ball and One Piece, mainly One piece because it's just so awesome. Also the first book or two will still be looking pretty bad compared to the rest of the series.

But One Piece is gods of Manga for me.

Even if Dragon Ball is long it's still a good read. Claiming "Once you've read one, you've read them all" is just bullshit. Otherwise it's like saying all action movies are the same and you don't need to bother seeing the rest when you have seen like "The Rock" or "Face Off".

They differ enough to give you a good taste. Also predicting things in Manga isn't as easy as you think too. Try and predict One Piece for one. Good luck I tell ya.

Oh and check Fairy Tail too. It's pretty fun.

My opinion on Death note, fun in the start, way to many words later on in the series. Got to boring so I skipped chapters to see what happened.

I'm happy you found one of the good ones for your first one (and you'll find no end of good recommendations on this site...though I'm one of the few who doesn't like Deathnote that much). You are now substantially less likely to join the gibbering hordes who read...

Oh, wait, I'm thinking of anime. Is there any manga equivalent to DBZ or Naruto to get people to jump the gun and swear off the medium?
