Is no one actually reading it? I'm not talking about being cool I'm talking about how asshats as a collective have turned into the definition of being gamers and that AFFECTS US!

Am I the only one who thinks there are connections between perception of a person and treatment of that person?

See, the thing is I just stopped caring years ago. If I find it fun, I find it fun. It isn't up to anyone else to decide how I feel about something. If I don't like the game, I play a game I do like.
Light is right if you constantly wonder what others think of you then your bound to always be depressed.
I don't mean me, I mean the larger parts of the community. I am depressed about them. I don't do any of that shit but I know that I am considered a part of the same group by the societal pigeon-hole system.
I do all of that shit (didn't read, but I think I can guess :p), and I'm satisfied with who I am.

Namely, you guys.

By being the proud owner of a uterus, I am instantly excluded from their address, and find that it speaks very specifically about... Well, the games most of you guys are playing. Mostly American FPSs, with the occasional WoW, and the Indie Bundle. Of course, when you're in a situation where you'd be worried about describing yourself based on the level of, "Cool," I suppose it would be talking specifically about this subsection of the gaming cultureverse.
You know. I just find it silly that they're naming sterotypes and accidently forming new ones at the same time.

I'm not too worried. The meaning of 'Cool' will change in about thirty seconds or so. It's such a fickle thing which Is why I'm not offended.

Take a read and I think you will feel as depressed as I am.
What are you talking about? None of his reasons are based on sound reasoning, it's mostly an organized rant which stinks of prejudice---as if he's ashamed to be called a gamer.

The sad, lonely, virgin stereotype has all but completely disappeared: gaming is not a fringe element anymore, it is part of popular culture. It's kinda saying mustaches suck because Hitler had a mustache; there are games tailored to eight year-olds, and then there are games made for douchy frat boys.

No, the industry does not thing we are all 17-Year old douchebags. Why? Oh, I don't know, it's maybe because Nintendo has one of the most popular consoles, and gaming titles that are meant for KIDS!

Video Game Storytelling not at the level of B movies, ok, maybe it is. But here is my problem with this kind of mentality: ITS A DIFFERENT TYPE OF PLATFORM! Seriously, if you try to make a movie adaptation which is word-for-word true to the Aeneid, then it's gonna suck major balls. It's going to be really, really boring. But books are meant to be read at slower pace and with a peace of mind, movies are meant to convey with the same message spiced up by on-screen action---and games have to dot it with a LOT of it. Yes the plot, scripts, and characters can be bettered, but this is NOT a reason for not liking the games. If you ask me, Indiana Jones has "B" movie plot, but it still fucking rocks. And besides, the way he puts it:
"Faceless Space Soldier Guns Down Many, Many Aliens" is just plain distortion of the idea. Who is Hamlet if he's not but a confused, Emo teen?

We are NOT obsessed with shiny fucking objects. Yes there are twats that will look at that, but really, I still play Age of Empires II, I still play UT, I still play super mario (sometimes). After this, I think this guy is just tripping on acid.

And lastly, it's not our "sense of entitlement" that drives piracy or has taken over the gaming community. It's the fucking anonymity of the fucking internet. I think the article--not the content--itself is joke. Really, is it only gamers that have this sense of entitlement? How about all those people downloading songs, softwares, operating systems and etc? How about those? Are they gamers? And if really every one has such a strong sense of entitlement, how the fuck has the gaming industry grown to this gigantic level that it is today? It's kinda saying the mall sucks (they do) just because there are shop-lifters. The game developers aren't in it for charity sake, they make money and that's why they are still in business. This guy should take a simple Micro Econ class.

It's a very weak piece and not even humourous by crack standards, so let's rip it apart point for point:

5.We Can't Shake the "Lonely, Anti-Social Virgin" Stereotype

Are you a virgin or an anti-social? If not, then why feel attacked?

4.The Industry Thinks We're All 17-Year-Old Douchebags

This one is about the portayal of women in games. Why it is poor argument: film, commerce and the music industry are no better in this regard.

3.Video Game Storytelling is Still at the Level of B Movies

Games are about gameplay.
Even then the average blockbuster movie doesn't have a good plot either and hollywood still gets away with that.
#3 is like arguing films and books still haven't reached the gameplay level of Pong.

2.We're Still Obsessed by Shiny Gadgets

Also applies to cars, phones, action movies and interior design, just to name a few. The looks of a thing are valued in almost every aspect of culture.
GFX whoring does not even apply to all games, only AAA titles.

1.We Have Some Serious Entitlement Issues

So all gamers are pirates huh?
With some ignorant crap about DRM thrown into the mix. Wong is dull and ignorant.

Only 3 of my good friends know I game... the rest think I just work alot and do something else. I hide it because I just don't want them to think I'm a hardcore gamer and do nothing else but game, which I don't. All these reasons are invalid to me at least.

5: I shake it off every day.

4: Doesn't effect because that's the industry, no people I hang out with on a regular basis.

3: Same as #4.

2: Everyone is now-a-days.

1: The only issues I have is with trust and a couple Game Informers just because I got them for free.

I am a gamer and I don't give a shit what you or anybody else thinks about that.

Love it, leave it, or prepare to get pwned.

That's my arguement.

True. I guess I'm just a bit annoyed at how Cracked is kinda exclusive of women in the way it writes. It has some truely interesting content, but its like watching BET: I'm reminded every three seconds that I'm not the target audience, and therefore odd in my own classification for partaking in this form of entertainment, and often get talked about in said content in a very strange manner.
Good point though; there's no real point to being offended by this stuff. And yet I did kind of get offended. Is it bad that I usually figure out where I am in my menstrual cycles by how pissed I get at things on the internet?

I don't care if people think I'm a gamer or not. In fact I take pride in my video game playing all the while maintaining a good social life with all my friends from school. None of them care because they understand that's the thing I do. Plus I've learned to not really pay a bunch of attention to other peoples opinions since they are, of course, Opinions.

That article can be SOOO taken down with a nice punch of logic or two.

1) I can say the same about Comic books, Movies and a whole lot of other things. Everything has their bad point, not games only.

2) Moot point. We have the same stigma types in Movies (Watchmen) and a few others, also, unlockables are unlockables, they're for fun, not supposed to make sense. Fan-Service if you will.

3) You forgot Shadow of the Colossus, Nico Bellic (SP?) actual has a story ON HIM, and Bioshock also was very well told. All of them can take any B rated movie and have it for breakfast, and most movies are old rehash of pretold stories (EI: Avatar = Brazilian Amazonian Forest and Chinese oppression from outside).

4) So is every other medium...big deal.

5) Valve, Blizzard and a few other developers like Relic would like to have a word with you.

I could expand what I just pointed out, but frankly, anyone with a brain can see where I'm coming from and where I'm going.

i enjoy being labled as a gamer. no other labels apply to me otherwise. i just wish i had enough nerd status to feel like i earned the title. alas, i don't have enough time or money to pursue the things they do (modding computers, playing tabletop, etc).

Bah, I suppose not but it's probably smart to do so. Getting offended over the internet to me is more of an 'Ignore it, or they win' kind of thing.

But this news or 'list' does not compare to anything written on MSN news. MSN news offends me quite often so I decided to stop reading it. One article said ''Men are hairy apes whom should be chased with a razor'' without classification of saying Some, or other implying that everyone was involved. It makes me a sad pandaperson.

In fairness however, you can't really write about a target audience with such manner without someone getting offended.

well, that's the joy of being a satirical news reporter. you get to find new ways to get people butthurt about something every week.
just like how Stephen Colbert goes straightfaced into interviews with diplomats and the like, just to confuse and annoy them.
just like how Yahtzee interviews games, but rips on them so the fanboys get mad.
just like the Onion makes an ENTIRE fake newspaper every week!

people love it, hate it, and love to hate it and that's what it's all about.

I think it's pathetic how in the last decade, video games became mainstream simply because Microsoft and Sony had the money to buy advertising, product placement, and recognition in pop-culture and that "gaming" has become synonymous with playing XPS and MMO.

I'll be the first person to admit that I fucking hate both of those genres and society's idea of what constitutes "gaming". What about Mario? Zelda? Megaman? Oh wait... those titles are for kids and don't qualify as "real" games for "real" gamers because they aren't soaked in gore and don't feature sexuality.

Each and every one of you that bought into this high school stereotype is to blame and you are the reason why you don't get anything "original" anymore. You enable the media to portray gaming as being nothing more than WoW, MW2, and GTA. You enable the developers to keep cranking out the same tired space marine bullshit titles because they know that for all of the bitching you do on the internet, at the end of the day, you'll rush out and buy the newest Space Marine derivative to play online with all of your little "clan/guild/corp." members.

You have no one to blame for this stereotype but yourselves.
