Yeah I really didn't enjoy it either. Heath Ledger put in a good performance but I couldn't stop laughing at Christian Bale's "badass" voice.

It was just an altogether average movie in my opinion, but everyone suddenly started bumming off it

Eh, I liked it, a lot. Probably the most fun I ever had in a movie theater. Sure, it's not the number one film of all time, but it's still very good and certainly one of the best of '08.

And Slumdog Milionaire is certainly not overrated.

Hasn't it just got as popular to hate that movie, as it is to love it?

IMO it was a great film. It wasn't, but it was very entertaining, and a great take on Batman and the Joker.

And to those that claim it wasn't about Batman as much as the Joker, I say you haven't really understood it properly. And I'm not meaning that in a pretentious filmcritic kind of way - it's sorta obvious. The villains are, and have always been, the mirror that defines Batman. Batman evoled in this film, because the Joker appeared. The Joker is as much a part of Batman as is Bruce Wayne.

What the film really needed was Harley Quinn beside Joker.
Nah. Another character to be presented would just make the film too cluttered. Besides, she's not important to Batman as a character.

Why so depressing?

Honestly though I wasn't so much for seeing this film at first. I was only really interested in Spiderman where movie-comic tie ins were concerned, but after all the five star reviews and praise I figured I'd check it out, just to see what the fuss was about.
Now I've never read the batman books or watched the show, so I didn't really know much about the film beforehand, and I must point out I didn't even know Heath was dead. Actually I knew Heath Ledger was dead, I just didn't know that guy playing the Joker was him.

And I must say, I thought the film was freaking awesome. It had a Watchmen style anti-hero vibe about it, the acting and image of the Joker was compelling and disturbing, and apart from a rather blunt ending I was very impressed with it. It's the reason I bought Arkham Asylum...which I'm actually having fun with. I might be able to get into this franchise.

I liked it very much.

It had good effects and excellent acting.

It's all a matter of personal refrence though.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. In my opinion it's currently the best superhero (sorta) movie of all time, finally ousting X-men 2, which had been sitting there just a little too long. On the other hand:

I was going to make a comment to this effect, but he did it better. Seriously, if you judge a movie based on the idiotic internet fad that sprung up around it, you're going to have a lot of problems with things like Dark Knight, 300, etc.

Because before these movies, pretty much all the batman movies haven't been very good (Lie to yourself, go ahead I don't care) Nothing really took up the dark undertones of the stories as well as these have and if you're not a fan of the fandom (As lulzy as that sounds) This is going to be a very okayish not amazing but watchable film. It's the spectacle of seeing the story in a new light, and not just the almost comical, embaressingly written 80-90's films that were... okay they were fun but... Didn't capture things in such a way that it drew you in to believe this could actually be happening. It was like watching the comicbooks performed live on stage. Pretty cool, but... lacking.

My mother had the same reaction while me and my father had to put buckets under our feets to make sure the floor was not stained with drool.

I like the Batman Mythos. So it's hard for me not to like these films.
I wasn't one of the 'Joker-fanatics' I enjoyed the whole thing. I was sitting in anticipation to see Harvey Dent's unwraveling and It did NOT disappoint.

The inaccurices in the story do not bother me either. It's a story, stories need flaws to actually be interesting. The writers took liberties with some of the backgrounds of the characters yes, but not in a way I feel destroyed anything so substantially, fans should get out their torches and pitchforks. It's like a really really good fanfic if I had to compare it to anything (Jokes about there being no such thing can go dive off a high cliff and shuddup, heard em all)

What he said.

OT:
Honestly, I like the film a lot, partly because of Christian Bale, but mainly because it looks into the darker side of Batman. While some may enjoy that, some may not. What was the honest point in this thread, starting up a real discussion or just getting someone to agree with you?

300 would be more understandable. That film was terrible and awesome at the same time. If you saw the trailer, it wasn't really necessary to watch the film, and it left a horrible taste in my mouth that some were stating that film as historical truth. I despised Zack Snyder after that...

When I saw this thread, I wondered if you would have been "that guy" (I hate to use it, but I can't think of anything else), the guy who thinks Casablanca and Citizen Kane is overrated, or The Godfather...and despite the fact that your opinion is respected (obviously) I'm not going to cast that thought off just yet.

When I first went to see The Dark Knight on release I walked in with High expectations and walked out with an extremely satisfied grin on my face. I agree that OMGHEATHLEDGER trend amplified the Hype. But as far as movies go, The Dark Knight is a masterpiece in its own right.

The movie, despite it's flaws, is great. It takes the already ambitious world Christopher Nolan made for batman and sets it against batman in ways Bruce would have never even imagined. a series of moral conflicts set up by the joker to drive his enemy into the dirt. It was done brilliantly with a lot of great action scenes and overall great performance from its cast. It's also a unique film in the sense that it's one of the first super hero films to be directed as a crime drama.

The most underrated character in the movie is Harvey Dent. His portrayal of Two Face was both completely insane and tragic. a Hero turned Villain with a story that broke my heart. Although i think he needed more screen time, Aaron Eckarts performance was top notch. I wont mention Heath Ledger because you all are familiar with his fan-base. They even piss me off to no end.

I finally, about 3 hours ago, saw the Dark Knight for the first time with my girlfriend, and in all honesty I can say this is probably the most overrated movie in recent memory (rivaled only by the likes of Slum Dog Millionaire).

Now I had no intention of ever watching this movie, because the Joker "fan base" pissed me off to no end. I think it's safe to say I can tell what kind of person you are if you have anything that says "Why so serious?" and know we have nothing in common, and can never be friends.

Ranting aside, can anyone please point out why this movie is good? Or better yet, explain why people are so obsessed over it? Sure, the "OMGHEATHLEDGER" trend lasted about 2 months, but it still wasn't deserved.

Just wondering if I'm the only person who didn't enjoy this film?
Because it was a good movie. The way the score works so well with the editing and the cinematography. The way the script comes together with the acting and directing. The actors are all top grade and wonderful, as is the DoP and Editor and the... actually, I really can't see how this movie is bad to be hounest. Is there a particular reason why the movie is bad?

Don't say a movie is bad if it is not. Say you don't like it. It avoids confusion.

1st watch-thought it was awesome
2nd watch-thought it was shit
3rd watch-thought it was OK
4th watch-thought it was really good

My main foible was that it had almost nothing to do with the actual Dark Knight himself. It seemed like Batman only came out for an action scene every now and then, but eventually I realised that it was mostly because I expected something different and got pissed off because of it. Now I learned to like it for what it is, but I still think some people give it WAY too much credit.
Also, Heath Ledger made an awesome Joker. Too bad he had to OD.

I found it a good movie.
Sure, it had some flaws... But name me another movie from that time that didn't?

It was quite entertaining and that's all I was expecting.
I guess viewing in HiRes iMAX with thundering sound also helped.

Boring film. Even the internet memes it spawned were boring from the get go unlike films such as Lord of the Rings and 300. It's laughable that people compare it to films like Citizen Kane and Godfather but films like that are generally used as a comparison to make other films seem important and respectable more than anything else.

Wow. Not only do you think Dark Knight is overrated, but also Slum Dog Millionaire. What do you also think The Godfather and Alien are overrated too? Dark Knight was probably the best superhero movie ever, and there is so much attention to detail in that movie. Everything was crafted amazingly from cinematography to sound editing. And it was paced so well unlike a lot of other movies which have disappointed me in recent years.
Yes that's right...not only i like batman because he is the only super hero who has no powers but uses his mind to take care of the bad guys in Gotham city...The movie was great
