lets start with the "AI" and all the wonderful intelligence they have been blessed with. basically every single enemy i have come across has one single set path where they walk between one or 2 points, stopping occasionally. They never deviate at all or have any sort of realistic rhyme or reason to how they are moving.
I can agree on that one. Thief 2 had better AI than Deus Ex: HR. Man, even Deus Ex had better AI.

But in my opinion the stealthaspekt is still superior to other "modern" stealth games (except Hitman) and thus is because of the leveldesign and the possibilities you get with a freakin 3m jump!
When you say modern stealth games what do you mean? I personally really liked the most recent stealth blockbuster i can think of, conviction. Have you played that? what didnt you like? It was more combat ofcused than some of the older titles but i kind of liked that because i felt that it let me be sneaky or not as i chose.

The only problem I have with the game is that I find Jensen to be a thoroughly unlikable character, I'm having big trouble immersing myself into the game because of it. Maybe I'm just too used to RPGs where you have more freedom in the personality and such of your character. In any case it's a personal problem, other than that I think it's a great game.

For starters this game claims that you can "play it how you want." Well that couldn't be farther from the truth. This is a stealth game plain and simple; you just get to choose whether it is a game where u shoot people that know your around there somewhere, shoot people that have no idea your there, or u can choose to not kill people but instead put them into a magical coma with your non lethal pistol/tazer and tranq rifle.
My current play-through on the hardest difficulty setting with little to no efforts at being stealthy would like to have a word with you. Just because you aren't good at the combat doesn't mean it isn't a viable option, it just means you're doing something wrong. Heck, the simple fact that every review for Deus Ex can't agree on whether the combat or the stealth is easier is proof enough that this is a "play it how you want" game. Again, just because one method is easier for you doesn't mean that the other isn't viable with the right play-style.

But what you cannot do under any circumstance is stand up and stop using their stupid ass fucking cover system, more on that later, because u will die instantly.
Yes yes, real classy. Everyone loves to take pot shots at the cover system in every game because it's the popular target these days. Bottom line: the cover system works. It works well. It isn't just some "We'll focus this game around cover-based shooting because it's the only idea we have" game, this is a "We'll use a cover system because other games have used it well in the past, and we think it will add to this game, too". And it does. It's pure genius how your character (who is very physically fit) has the ability to dive and dodge from one cover to the next rather than just clumsily crouch-walking from place to place.

Also, exactly what are you attempting to imply, anyway? Are you trying to say that standing in the middle of an open field should be a viable strategy during a gun fight? I have news for you, shooters have had cover systems ever since the invention of the strafe feature; it's called strafing behind a wall. If having to use a cover system offends you so much, just duck behind a box, then stand-up manually when you're ready to shoot. And if it offends you to even use a box as cover with that over-done crouching mechanic, then go ahead and just never use cover. See how far that gets you... in any FPS title.

I honestly just hate the cover system in THIS GAME and this game alone. It never bothered me in Mass effect 2, or resident evil 5. It just feels wrong to me in this game so i decided to try to play it like an FPS and that was not an option.

LOL and i wish everyone would stop telling me i suck at games. what is that about?I;m playing on normal difficulty and i can literally die within a half second if im at full health and out of cover. I have no problem playing this game sneakily and peaking out from behind cover. In fact im bored because its too easy. But i assumed (there's my first mistake right there) that the game forced me to use a first person when out of cover to support an fps style of play if i so desired.

With "modern" I meant games after Hitman 2 - till now. With a big focus on the Spliter Cell series. I did not like any of those games simply because I never felt any difference if I knock out every single guy on the map or try to sneak by. Hitman gave me a negative rating for that and up until now I played Deus Ex with only 4 Guys shot with my tranquilizer gun. And if I recall correctly I get exp boni for clearing a mission without shooting anyone.

But the last part of my post was solely my biased opinion. I simply love FPS (first person stealth) because of the immersion.
ya i cant get into avoiding people. I just like feeling like a predator; knocking off one person at a time until there is one guy left and he has no idea how he landed himself in this predicament. I can def see what u mean tho, most modern games don't cater to that very well. I'm glad this one offers u that choice. Its just a shame that someone can neutralize every single person with a melee attack and make more xp than you.

It's actually possible to sneak through most of the environments without killing or knocking out anyone, if you really try.

The easiest way is to just go in with a loud gun and kill everyone, but that's not exactly moral.

The reason it gets you less experience is because, if you're using guns, you don't need to use yourself. You see? It takes a lot more skill to stealth around, so the game gives you more perks to help you do it (like cloak, faster longer sprinting, silent running, and so on). If you're just going to use guns you don't really need most of them.

You can totally avoid most conflicts, or

You can choose non-lethal weaponry (peps, taser, gas, and takedowns) and act stealthily, or

You can do the same without giving a crap if they know you're there, or,

You can just shoot everyone, stealthily or not.

You can also normally choose your point of entry.

So yes, you do get a choice.

Obviously some methods will be better suited to different situations than others, but that's how life is anyway.

I don't think the game is perfect either. I found the last level of the game lacking, and the ending was kinda....forced? I dunno.

Regardless, it's still my Game of the Year. Either that or Dragon Age 2. (Deal with it.)

Well I thought it was really disappointing in the first hour, 20 hours later and it's the best thing I ever spent 20 hours on.

So basically, If you're disappointed and you've only just started playing it, I reccomend you stick with it, it get's so much better, especially as the story develops and I actually get interested in the characters.

I'm banking on skyrim; but if u really would consider dragon age 2 then i have a feeling we have different views of what makes a game noteworthy

You have a seriously low self esteem for mentioning that ginger.
Why?
Because you wish to clarify your self as a "better" person then any of the other people that view the Escapist, are you really that kind of a man?
A boring one?

That is one heavy cat.

Sorry, it was just so obvious, I've got nothing against you but I just couldn't let that one slide.

Anyway, I've not played it yet, I think it looks okay, the only real thing stopping me from getting it is that it's made by Square Enix. Besides, there's going to be a new Hitman game coming out soon and all the stealth stuff I would have done in Deus Ex (I like being sneaky) I'll probably get out of my system with Hitman anyway. I might still get DX, but not for a little while.

I'm sure plenty of people that post on here have adorable girlfriends that they care deeply about as well. I just found it ironic that i was insecure about not having the thing he thought i would be insecure about having. And that i was completely satisfied and secure about the thing he thought i would be insecure about not having.

Why does everyone in this thread think i'm a deusch? I wasn't even mean to the trolls? I'm just honest with my opinion is that a crime? oh and i swear a lot so i guess that makes me a barbarian. LOL I wish text could convey tone

I have to say that, while it rewards you more for not killing, at no point did I feel restricted in how I approached enemies. I simply played it as I felt it, without any gameplay restrictions breaking my immersion.

The cover system wasn't that bad in my opinion, and the gunplay was strong enough to keep me interested. As for the AI though, yeh. They're a bit stupid, I guess that's just one of the quirks of the game.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it. I did, and unless everyone's lying to me, so did many others. There are always that small amount of gamers who hate a really successful title, it just so happens that this time round, you are a part of that group.

Edit: One thing that DID really break the immersion for me, and get on my nerves, was the fact that patrolling guards don't notice each other going missing. You'd think they'd maintain some kind of occasional contact, and notice when someone suddenly stops patrolling their sector. But no, meaning you can pick off and hide guards one by one, until there's just one guy left in the whole complex, and he's still not the least bit concerned that something might be up. It makes me think of how much I liked the Arkham Asylum system, in which guards get more and more scared as they notice their partners getting picked off.

from what i understand doing a nonlethal undetected melee takedown awards u every single combat bonus u can get from an enemy except for the headshot bonus. The kicker is that u can get those same chunks of exp u get from sneaking through undetected as long as every person u incapacitate doesnt detect u first.
