Red Dead Redemption.

For me it was just "ride horse for hours, glitch, brief shootout, glitch, ride horse some more, glitch, go hunting for Beavers only to find that they apparently don't exist, glitch.

I played to the end of that glitchy mess, and as decent as the story was, I never enjoyed it for a second.

Knights of The Old Republic 2.

From a content perspective there was the weird retcon to the end of the first game that "Revan flew away with no explanation" and now the Sith have somehow taken over the galaxy despite my Revan purging them and leaving the Republic and Jedi firmly allied and in control.

There was the stupid plot twist of the evil companion you meet in nefarious circumstances at the beginning called Kreia is actually "Darth Traya" I mean, the names are so similar they literally rhyme, and the woman oozes evil and is basically insane, the game could never make it's mind up whether it should tell you straight out or keep it a secret
I'm going to sound like a total douche here, but my honour compels me to say it: Congratulations on missing pretty much the entire point of a 30+ hour game. I know taste is subjective, and I know that KotOR 2 does have its odd flaws, and gaps left by its brutal development time, but not only are you making a bigger deal out of many of these issues than they actually are, you've missed a couple of the things it was beating you over the head with.

Namely, labelling Kreia evil is totally doing it wrong. And no, the game isn't confused about whether or not it's a secret. It's right out there, but it's only obvious to the player, not the Exile. And as a last thing, there's a reason the names are assonant.
I understood the whole Kreia isn't supposed to be light/dark side and wants to destroy the force but everything she does is just rationally dark sided.
Sure she'll call you out for committing needlessly violent acts on a dark side playthrough, but no one in their right mind would ever think of doing those choices anyway, except for the extra dark side points. She is still totally focused on self to the detriment of all others and has a "helping other people makes them weak and brings them more pain" mantra, which are textbook darkside traits.
If you play light side you lose influence with her because she disagrees with your choices, if you play dark side you lose influence because you insult her and demean her; it's not because she disagrees with the choices you make, but your hostile attitude towards her that chides her.

I did enjoy the gameplay: The locations were interesting, there was much that was improved upon (the expanded system for upgrading weapons and armour was great) Some of the plot points really got me (I never realised Boba Fett was actually a Mandalorian until Kreia's prediction at the end of the game about the last Mandalorian being a 'shell of a man in a shell of a suit' My mind was totally blown!)
The idea of the institutions built around the dark and light side of the force being wrong was an interesting idea, and it does pose a lot of interesting questions about the Jedi order, but Kreia quite heavily leaned to the dark side in her beliefs (Compare Kreia to Jolee Bindo, who would also be considered neutral and disliked both the Jedi and Sith orders, and would equally condemn both unnecessary generosity or violence, but wasn't a crazy psychopath)

I enjoyed playing the game for the most part, but so many inconsistencies brought it down: The Ebon Hawk getting destroyed and falling down a crevice only to appear fully repaired at the very end. Having so many characters return was just jarring, and many new characters were basically just old characters from Bizarro world (Atton and Carth: Any way they weren't exactly the same they were exact opposites of each other and Zaalbar+Mission being innocent bestest friends vs. the insane hate relationship of Mira+Hanharr) So much half implemented content that led nowhere was constantly jarring: some of the bounties seemed to be none existent on Talos, I think I remember the G0-T0 droid had a pile of storyline cut from it, there's a door in Talos that was clearly meant to lead to another area, but doesn't, the HK-47 clones plot went nowhere. I apparently did the quests in the wrong order on Nar Shadaa and totally dicked up all the optional missions on that planet.

For my first one that'll be Fallout 3. All of my friends keep telling me how awesome it is and how they love it, but I just couldn't get into it. Not sure why exactly. Going to try giving it another shot though, if only because I recently got the GOTYE from Amazon, so hopefully that goes well.

Pretty much the same thing with Dragon Age: Origins, just couldn't do it. Will not be trying that one again though.

You should maybe try KOTOR...although it has a similar combat system to Dragon Age...but it is my personal favourite RPG because the story is fantastic and I much prefer sci-fi to medieval (I still like medieval themed games but I like sci-fi more).

Even then that game took me a bit to get into...the first half hour or so was bad and I didn't really understand the controls. After that though I understood the controls and was so immersed in the world that I decided to put it down because I was hungry...I had played the game for 8 and a half hours straight (never have I done that before or since) and still hadn't even half-finished the tutorial planet (not because it was long but because I just kept finding stuff to do).

Give it a go and if you don't like the combat then thats the reason you don't like Dragon Age either...the combat is pretty strange but if you give it a chance it becomes fun.
Do I need KOTOR to enjoy KOTOR2? I'd rather skip straight to the game developed by Obsidian. I consider them far better story-tellers than pretty much anybody else in gaming atm.

If you think Dragon Age 'sucked' I wouldn't recommend either of them, the combat system is the same and it's based on D20 just like Neverwinter Nights. kotor 2 uses a lot of context from 1 but it's sadly extremely plagued by a mary sue syndrome with the main character and a few disagreements with canon, I think it's quite a bit below kotor but still a good game. If you wanted to fully enjoy and understand both games I'd recommend reading Tales of the Jedi: Knights of the old Republic which is where they were based in the first place, the games being what happens right after the comics.

OT - Well... Can't really name a game I wanted to like but didn't, I thought Fallout 2 had a very slow start that could have been better but the game's still awesome overall. If there's a genre I kinda wanted to like I guess it's JRPG's, since Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger few if any has managed to be decent at all for me. But it's more "I used to like it and it utterly sucks now."

Does anyone else find that a lot of the posts in this thread come off as rather... mean spirited?

And now I've said that, I guess I can't ***** about that one game for fear of being a hypocrit.

Suffice to say, I think your favourite game is a worthless piece of shit and I resent you for liking it. So there.
I have to say this is the first post on the escapist that has made me laugh aloud in a long time, well done!

Tomb Raider. The new one, that is. I tried SO hard to like this game, because I really wanted a Tomb Raider where Lara isn't tiger murdering bimbo to be awesome. Such a shame that the game is nothing but one big quick time event with some narration tacked on. Fo shame!

Bioshock. Played through it twice because I was convinced I must have just somehow missed the genius of it the first time through, but just couldn't find it. Having non-regenerating health is fine, but not when it's combined with having about the same maximum health as CoD on veteran (virtually none) especially with basic enemies that can take more small arms fire than most armored vehicles. Plasmids were horrifically situational at best and completely useless at worst. Plot was dull and predictable (the only thing I didn't predict was the mind control, the betrayal and Fontaine thing I figured out immediately). The only thing I really liked was the atmosphere, but I play games for more than that, like gameplay. Worst five dollars I ever spent, should've bought some candy bars. Tried out Infinite at a friends house though, which is far superior, limited weapon handling non-withstanding.

Soooooo many, so I'm not going to try and name them all. But here's a few:

1. GTAIV. I've given this game more chances than it deserved, and I intend to give it a few more. But what a piece of shit. I can't play a single minute of that game without thinking "I wish I was playing Saints Row."

2. Bastion. I'm currently working on my latest effort to convince myself this game is as fun as the hype says it is. And it's not bad. I guess I just don't see what the big deal is.

3. Guacamelee. I wanted to love this game because of the whole "Metroidvania" thing (which is grossly overstated). And for a little while I did. But the ultra-steep and sudden difficulty spike late in the game means I won't be finishing, and that really annoys me, so now I'm bitter about the game.

Brutal Legend. I love everything about the game (the style, the entire idea of it, Jack Black, etc.), but the actual gameplay sucks a fat one.
Yes, I agree with you on this. Not only that, the writing ad cutscenes were top notch, and I wanted to continue to see more of it, but I just....couldn't...

For me its Dragon Age 2, I had so much hope for that game, it's the only game I ever preordered. I loved Dragon Age: Origins, it may have had the old BioWare go to X places and complete objectives to advance to next stage of the game mechanic, but any game where I can play all the way through and want to start over again is a winner for me. Then came DA2, combat replaced by button mashing, every location in the game used in the first couple of hours then endlessly recycled, and then the god-awful ending. I mean, come on, yeah both factions can be essentially evil if thats the way the developers want to go, but to change the series of events so that whichever side you pick turns out to be that much more evil than the other side is just a dick-move. I completed the game once and unlike its predecessor, not only did i not dive into a replay, but i havent even picked it up since.

Yeah... Guild Wars 2 :(

The beta's and hype left me completely burnt out by the time the game was released, like a flaccid penis right after a wank. I couldn't get myself to play the game for longer than a month. It's a real shame. The fuzzy feeling I got from playing the first Guild Wars was completely gone for me. Hopefully they rethink their plan of not making expansions.
I too really enjoyed Guild Wars 2 until I got to the end game and realised the only thing you could do is grind for a legendary.

That meant either getting REALLY lucky or amassing an incredible amount of wealth. My girlfriend still plays it but I can't bring myself to pick it up again. I actually wish the game had the holy trinity (tank, heal, damage/CC) to make the instances more engaging.

Any Final Fantasy game ever (yes I've tried every single one that everybody says is the best, which is primarily six and seven, apparently). I just can't get into them, and I hate the combat. If I play turn-based combat, I prefer it to be more like KotOR. The stories weren't particularly gripping either, though to be fair I've never gotten past half of a Final Fantasy game.

Grand Theft Auto 4 tried as hard as I could to get in to it but it just seemed to realistic for a Grand Theft Auto game.

Dark Cloud 1 and 2 was the other way around loved the game but the game must not been into me sense a total of 6 copies broke on me.

Wow, SO MUCH Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

I want to love that game SOOOOOO BAAAAADDDD! From the little I've played, I'm really liking the story, the atmosphere, the tone, and the characters, not to mention the B-E-A-U-TIFUL amber and black color scheme.

But every time I try to get back into it, the gameplay always completely stonewalls me. I just can't enjoy that kind of cruel, unforgiving, trial-and-error gameplay.

Whoo boy, Borderlands 1 and 2. I must've borrowed or rented the first about 5 times. Even played it with my best bro, and neither of us liked it much, we couldn't get into it at all. That's really saying something. I tried Borderlands 2 back in March. It was better, but still didn't grab me. I just don't get the hype behind the game. They're not bad by any means though. I just don't get why people like them so much personally.

Almost every game since Duke Nukem Forever has let me down, including ET:Quake Wars, Battlefield 3, Diablo III, XCOM:EU, The Cave. Several dozen games I've completely refused to purchase. Now that I think about it, a large majority of games since the year 2000 have been awful in my opinion. I might be too old to appreciate current video games. Most of it is mind-numbingly monotonous hand holding crap.

Skyrim, I've a computer that runs it. I bought it in a steam sale before I had my laptop because I knew I'd install it. I just don't like it. The story seams non existent, the combat is lame but I feel like I should like it. I did pay more money then I usually pay for a game.

Skyrim you beautiful waste of money you.

KOTOR 2

I bought the game last fall and was ecstatic at first. I'd heard all about the bugs and glitches that had originally made the game a cluster f*** but the final modification package that cleared all the bugs up was downloadable and so I did that and jumped in...

Only to find myself wandering around in circles.

Seriously, the game isn't as straight forward as KOTOR I was. I had to look up walk-throughs to get out of situations time and again because I missed some particular part here or there. Given that I'm the type of player who went through KOTOR I about 50 times so I could milk any and every bit of play from it I'm not exactly given to missing leads.

Finally I just gave up. I'd made it to something like 23rd level and I'm basically wandering around in circles trying to figure out what the hell I'm supposed to do. And this is after leaving one or two planets/areas behind because I got fed up trying to figure out what I was supposed to do there.

I suppose that I'll go back and play it again, but I'm guessing that I'm not even half way through the game--but I'm 23rd level? What the heck?
