To Run!

I know that years ago Crysis had this title and nothing even came close to the amount of abuse it gave to your rig, however I want to know what the current one is. Tell me escapists! Which game will bend my processor over a barrel and go to town? Which game will cause me to look inside my case and see a farewell note instead of a graphics card? Which game will turn my PC into a fire hazard?

Try ArmA II maxed out with a load of AI in a massive firefight.

Certainly gave my computer something to think about.

Metro 2033, I hear, is the hardest on rigs now.

If you really want to fuck your modern technology, try opening instances of Metro 2033, Crysis 1 and 2, and STALKER. Keep a fire extinguisher and Kleenex nearby.
I second this, but it might be passed up by Metro Last Light whenever that comes out. Of course, the developers may optimize its engine more (kind of like the treatment Cryengine 3 got when Crysis 2 was released), so 2033 could remain the top dog in that regard.

For added amusement get all of them to run on a different screens using Eyefinity, all games fullscreened on different monitors, at max resolution.

Mount&Blade or Warband.

Proceed to download the Battlesize changer. Proceed to set it to 1000 or more. Proceed to enter a battle with at least 1000 soldiers.

Metro 2033 on full settings DX11, is still the current benchmark game. Looks pretty spectacular on full if your system can handle it.

Not seen anything upcoming soon which is capable of taking it out.

Problem with M&B benching is that with large battles you'll crash due to lack of resources rather then a great need for processing power.

Offtopic: You're obviously a M&B fan. Did you know there's a third one out now, With Fire and Sword?

Try Touhou...

Any of the 12-something games will do. Try 11 (Subterrenean Animism).

Quite true. The limit however, is high enough to make many computers cry. I based my response on "Which game will cause me to look inside my case and see a farewell note instead of a graphics card? Which game will turn my PC into a fire hazard?" rather than it really being a benchmark.

Indeed, tis true. Used to have great fun using the limit unlocker to make huge, epic battles, the problem was balancing that with the memory leaks which caused it to crash every 5 minutes...

From the specs I looked up, Metro 2033 sounds like it's a real ball-breaker so I'll go with that. It looks like I could run it myself but not sure if it would run too well at max settings.

Makes me laugh though when I look back at games of the past that were benchmark games or too much for me to run. I remember having trouble running the original Baldur's Gate with the machine I had in '98... which was from '96. That plus many more games from that time forced me to upgrade. Good times...
