I think I hate to talk about music more than anything else.

Are you me? Seriously this is a major annoyance for me, half of my friends don't listen to music while the others are obsessed with 1 or 2 bands and are really narrow minded. Having a huge collection of music as well as it being my major passion means that I get pissed off during conversations about music.

Friend: "Modern rock music sucks!"
Me: "No it doesn't, have you heard the new Swans album or Lonerism by Tame Impala?"
Friend: "Who?"
Are you referring to The Seer?

I bought it because it was in my Amazon recommendations and I liked the cover! (This is strangely a common occurrence!) And now I love it! :p Really good album!

OT: I like a metric fuck ton of music... and I get this with some of the stuff I listen too... sometimes I get awkward conversations when I am asked what I am listening to. Particularly if I am listening to drone or something similar!
  • "What are you listening to?"
    "Tim Hecker..."
    "Who's that?"
"Canadian drone artist... you won't like it!"
    "Why not? I like music...!"
    "You won't like this..."
"Let me hear..." *Listens...* "Is this just, like, the intro or something?"
    "Nope... that's it!"
    "That's boring...!"
    "Sigh! ¬_¬"

The best thing I have found with more of my eclectic tastes in music is to play it in the background at a dinner party or a evening with drinks! Then anybody who hears it and likes it will mention, and then you can get all enthusiastic about it... other than that you kinda gotta just keep it personal!
Yep, The Seer is fantastic, one of the best albums of the year in my opinion HOWEVER it is not my favourite Swans album, my favourite is Soundtracks for The Blind which you should really check out, alot of Drone, Ambient, Post-Rock stuff on that album.

I love Tim Hecker as well actually, Harmony in Ultraviolet is a classic!

Well OP, I can certainly relate to some degree. I love music to the bottom of my heart but my taste has become rather eclectic in the last years, meaning I'm looking for something or rather anything that is different. Insanely different at times, even. And since nobody in my vicinity actually likes that stuff, the only people I have ever seen who know some of the...err....difficult parts of the music I listen to, are from this very forum.

I can, however, talk to all kinds of people about music because my taste is not only weird but also varied which allows me to actually know and like a lot of the music people tend to talk about. And I'm usually very eager to, even if my knowledge about the technical aspects is...well...lacking[footnote]euphemism[/footnote]. Why? Well discovering new music is insanely fun all the time and in every discussion I can discover something new to enjoy. In fact, this is probably the main reason why I stick around in every other music thread around here (Something which I'd also recommend to the OP if he's also on the lookout for some variety and perhaps some talk).

Case in point:

Also, off topic, whenever someone talks about music online, I feel the need to post this:
I will talk about how Larry and His Flask is a good contribution to both punk and country music. Or how Streetlight Manifesto teaches you how to appreciate a good brass section. Or the subtleties in a Moby song. Or whatever the fuck Aesop Rock is saying. Or that Sage Francis will write a rap song that will make you cry. Or that Ratatat is stoned off their asses but make fantastic music because of it. Or how Atmosphere is both bitter and beautiful in their music. Or Steam Powered Giraffe has exceptional showmanship. Or how Born Ruffians will make you a hipster and you will like it. Or how Mumford and Sons will make you want to learn how to play the acoustic guitar. Or how Foster the People will make you want to groove which is what makes a good pop song. Or how Radiohead... well okay, I don't think I need to say anything about Radiohead. Or how DJ Shadow will make you stoned without pot. Or how Daft Punk... well okay, again, I don't need to explain. Or that Tommy Guerrero is damn sexy with a guitar. Or how Madeon is house music's second coming of christ! ... Okay, that one was a little extreme, I'll admit. But damn it! He was a bloody kid when he started making music!

Or how these songs are these songs are just awesome.

Or, most importantly, how Weezer was the best band ever during the 90s then completely sucked ass now.
Yeah... I'll talk your ear off about the music I like. :p
Well, thank you good sir. I have now been supplied with at least two bands I'll have to look into.

You have earned yourself an internet cookie.

Don't eat it all at once, you hear me?

Now also off-topic....
Did I mention how much I love the deserted post-apocalyptic atmosphere of Godspeed You! Black Emperor's #F#A Infinity [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0CdLfSEEwA]? Or how brilliantly Blind Guardian knows know how to transport an epic [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFAskJN4YKE] - or scratch that - many [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxeiH5q3Dlw] epics [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uxLm8mcYgo]? Or how Ayreon's The Human Equation [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TObcpD6zneM] is among the sappiest things I dare to like, yet is intensely rewarding if you can get into it? Or how Estradasphere's comical jazzyness [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FbnYgbpRlhg] always brightens up my day? Or how Mussorgsky's old castle from his Pictures at an Exhibition [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oN2j-5ZB3ZQ] almost threatens to drown me in melancholy? Or how Maudlin Of The Well [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGq6ofW-NqQ] and Kayo Dot [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7X6FKD1EX_o] seem like representations of impressionist and expressionist art to me? Or about me also liking almost film-score-y [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5mgw0goLqo] pieces [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IihUMbPucUU] that never cease to amaze me? Or this dark depressing violin-sludge thing that is Giant-Squid's The Ichtyologist [http://www.myspace.com/giantsquid/music/songs/dead-man-slough-55196745]? Or, perhaps, just something [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7g11ViJnU0] far more common [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l2sjcyfCW_M] for a change?
I did say I love to talk about it, right? :)

I don't listen to much music, which makes it reallyhard to have conversations about it. Doesn't help that I'm mostly exposed to crappy pop like Call Me Maybe and Never Ever Getting Back together.
Those aren't crappy pop. They're damned effective pop. What basis do you have to call them "crappy" if you don't listen to much music? You don't like them, that's fine. Don't project your opinions to define something objectively if you don't have the context to back it up.

OT: I like pretty much all the things in music (except I've been overexposed to country music), but no one cares about my favorites. That's OK, I still have lots of other things to talk about in music.

Music really isn't one of my strong suits. Whatever is pleasing to one's ears, that's their business.

I'm reluctant to talk about music too, but for slightly different reasons.

I tend to be a bit ambivalent about music, so it's hard for me to really pick songs and defend my choices when it comes to conversations with other people. Also I happen to like some objectively terrible music. Like I'll listen to it and think "God this is awful. These lyrics sound like something a 12 year old emo kid would write because he got grounded" and then end up listening to it 20 more times because I think it's catchy.

I love talking about music. I just hate how some people aren't open minded when it comes to music. People who don't give anything a chance are the worst. If you went through my iTunes you'd find everything from The Beatles to Cannibal Corpse to NSYNC to Florence and the Machine. Granted the music I listen to most is post hardcore and metalcore, and whoo boy. Talking about those bands are terrible (especially on this site where it seems anything with screams and breakdowns automatically is terrible). I don't like every metalcore band ever (I know some people who do and I've heard tons of shit metalcore). I only listen to what I find good.

I like talking about music, it's just hard to find someone who's open minded.

I'm right there with you. Actually, what bothers me most is that people judge all of my music taste by my favourite band (RHCP). Yes, that's my favourite band but it does not dictate EVERYTHING I listen to! If I say "I don't like this song because of the repetitive beat, poor lyrics and terrible vocals, etc" I always get "Well, fuck you! You like RHCP." If that's what you think, don't ask me for my opinion on a song. Sorry, that just bothers me lol.

But I do like discussing music with people who are passionate about it because you can find a lot new and wonderful stuff that you might miss out on.

Actually, you could make a pretty convincing argument for Dubstep not being music. Especially since you have previously deferred to the knowledge of theoriticians

I pretty much only have one friend with whom I can talk music. Nobody else I know has the same musical taste as me. Sure, there are common bands or artists. But they are generally few and far between.

That may, however, be in so small part due to my tendency to find obscure and/or foreign music.

@War Penguin/Befuddled Sheep/Chromatic Aberration: That feel when someone else likes the music you like. <3

And now, for a bit of good natured music peening/artist sharing :p

The mix of Gregorian chanting and techno/electronica that is E Nomine
The incredible feeling of sadness and the pain of the human experience that is Vewustung.
The Art of Life, possibly the longest song that has been played live in its entirety, and well worth it.
Or how about the delightful indie electro pop stylings of Shy Child? Or the storytelling masterpiece that spanned five albums from Rhapsody/Rhapsody of Fire?Looking for something more reserved? Then try the raw and bleak sound of depressive metal band Abyssic Hate . Or just knock back a couple beers with your friends accompanied by the sounds of Great Lake Swimmers , Beach House , School of Seven Bells , and The Felice Brothers .
You too!?

This is a very good day for Beffudled Sheep.
