ok so earlier i got the box at the bottom of my screen, it say "latest application is availible for NETGEAR WNA3100 Download it now?" and is has a check box next to it that says "don't reminder me again untill next update." and that's not just some typo on my part it really does say that.

plus the box itself looks kinda shady. do I have a Trojan on my computer? and how can i get rid of it?

It...sounds like the software for your USB Wi-Fi dongle is out of date. That being said, you should probably download MalwareBytes and do a scan, because if you're concerned by what sounds like a standard system message you might not be the most savvy user which in my experience suggests you're a more likely candidate for infections.

I think he's concerned about the spelling - and TBF it is a bit weird for a Netgear product to have an egregious typo like that.

OP, install malwarebytes [https://www.malwarebytes.org/free/] and run a scan, then make sure your normal AV is uptodate and run a scan with that as well.
If they don't find anything then chances are the popup is legit.

If you're concerned your computer has an infection, like Snowy above said, just download MalwareBytes and run a scan to be sure. If you don't have any sort of virus protection on your computer, it's a good idea to have it. Avast is free and pretty good as well. Avast also have a feature called "Boot Time Scan" which will run a virus scan before your computer gets started up and can catch some sneakier ones.

Also cute avatar.

My mistake - I never considered the spelling as part of the concern...the rest wasn't particularly well written so it kind of just blended in but on rereading it does seem like that was the point so now I feel like a dope. Having no idea why some kind of malware would do anything like that threw me for a loop...surely once it was installed it wouldn't have to pretend to be a system message like that - it's more the standard to pretend to be something that one would expect to pay for as rogue anti-virus malware so often does. Maybe it was a browser popup or something just trying to get clicks and there wasn't a pre-existing infection but a scan is still a good idea. I googled some of the wording..."latest application is availible for NETGEAR WNA3100" only came up with this thread but correcting the spelling leads to a file "English.lng" from part of driver software for the WNA3100 so it does seem like that may be the wording used in the actual software minus the spelling error. I'm really not sure what to make of it.

Thanks for the help guys. I restarted my computer in safe mode then ran malware bytes, super-antispyware, and then Microsoft Security essentials. Neither of which found anything. Then I downloaded the update. Nothing weird is happening to my computer so i think i'm good. I was pretty concerned cause i never expected a wireless driver to need updates.

Oh and thanks to Eclipse Dragon for the compliment about my Avatar.

Got the same "Don't reminder me..." popup - looks very suspicious. Here's a screengrab: http://postimg.org/image/kocl6kinh/

I do have a netgear wna3100, and the window went away when I killed wna3100.exe, and that exe and folder scanned okay with anti-virus, so maybe Netgear has just gotten rid of all their designers and proofreaders...
