His wit is there, it's just not in plain view anymore.
Plenty of clever jokes behind the crassness and the Maddox-like "I am so awesome, ha, ha, this is obviously a joke" thing.

But, not everyone is going to appreciate his humour, just like the denizens of the Internet completely missing the point with "the cake is a lie" (it isn't a lie).

People need to remember Yahtzee is a comedian, not a real game reviewer. If he was to give his honest opinion about the games he 'reviews' then the fanbase would dry up. Not all ZP reviews are funny, and some of the things Yahtzee says are just plain stupid but you have to remind yourself he's not reviewing the game or even criticizing it, he's just making fun of it.

Do people actually take his opinions on gaming seriously? The only time Yahtzee is honest about what he thinks of a game is when he's not obliged to make people laugh. [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/extra-punctuation]

I 100% agree with the OP. The older episodes were more intelligent. The newer one generally feel like going through the motions.

His Washington review had me in fucking stitches.

That is all.
So you mean that the blandest and unfunniest thing he has ever done is still hilarious to you? Well, no point in arguing with fanboys, i guess.

Did you even read my post? I'm not implying that he is a game reviewer, i'm implying that he's a bad comedian (in the later times, at lest).

Notice that I said people. It sure sounds different to Kollega.

I said this because many people tend to judge Yahtzee as something he's not trying to be (at least I hope he's not trying to be a serious game reviewer), as awhile back I'm sure we all saw that Youtube vid of someone who posted a bunch of stupid reasons about why he hates ZP.

These things need to be said because some people take a long time to understand the mystic galaxy that is The Escapist.

I would've agreed with you a few days back, but the latest ZP was fucking ace. First one to make me laugh in a month or so. Felt more like a comedic routine than the usual "come up with new ways to call this game bad in a monotone then end with an exasperated and heavily-emphasized punchline", and god, was that ever a welcome change.

Oh geez, sorry. But i didn't notice that many people in this thread that he's a "serious game reivewer". Still, i guess there is a reason for that comment. So, moving on...

His little sections 'in-between' where it was him talking in a car weren't particularly funny I'll give you that, but every time he reviewed a national monument was hilarious.
"Washington monument = giant dick" is a hilarious joke? I thought it was a wee bit too obvious. Truth be told, i don't remember exact jokes in that video - but i can certainly say it wasn't funny to me. If it was, i'd remember said jokes.

Look, Kollega. You should know this better than alot of others here (you seem to know which way is up, unlike others) but this is the type of thread that not only breeds negativity, but really no one cares about. It's a pointless bash thread disguised as a personal opinion.
It's not a "pointless" bash thread. Well, not only that. I just couldn't stay silent - and i even gave quite valid (in my eyes, anyway) reason why it's not as good as it used to be. Too bad that according to local codes of conduct, i should take my personal opinion and stick it where the sun dosen't shine For The Greater Good. Funny how Yahtzee is doing "an important job" by criticizing the game industry, yet i shouldn't point out the flaws in his work.

Maybe i should re-do my thread on nuclear power? That was some serious discushin, which everyone here seems to crave.

ORLY? Haven't seen one in quite a while.

This isn't any big issue with pros and cons, it's just you pointing out objective qualities and claiming that they are horrid without compromise (yes, comedy is objective)
And by saying that "comedy is objective" you want to tell what? That dead baby jokes are always funny, or something else entirely? "Subjective" would be more fit.

I still find his videos to be amusing, and I don't think he bashes the U.S. too much at-all. I do think that he says too much about Nintendo "always using the same characters" however, I know that it's true to a certain extent but he says it on virtually every Ninty-game review to the point where its becoming a bit boring... but anyhow, they are still of high-quality, I thought SMG2 review was one of the best I had seen for ages!

1) - the neverending bashing of America is "meh".
WRONG: On so many levels. When a single nation has alienated the whole world by being a dick, I applaude the man who appropiately and hilariously mocks them.
Ooooh sorry, i didn't know America has killed your beloved parents and ate your pet doggy! Calling USA and USSR "dicks of equal size" is an example of failing history forever - US may be bad, but it's not THAT bad. Did Americans ever, oh say, dry up an entire sea? It's also a sign of disrespect to 20 million people killed by Stalin - but on the other hand, Croshaw does not respect the Holocaust victims either.

2) - constant appearance of balls, dicks, various holes and such are "meh".
SORTA: Yeaaaaaaaaaaah... getting kinda weird, but still funny.
Now, it may sound weird, but it seems that he went over some kind of threshold. Dick picture every 45 seconds or so = funny. Dick picture every 15 seconds means that novelty wears thin much faster and at some point, you find yourself no longer amused by them.

3) - the sarcasm regarding "plotdeviceum" and "helicopter intro" seemed pretty blunt, like a hammer instead of rapier, and therefore "meh".
WRONG: Blunt yet effective.
That's because you don't read TvTropes, where that kind of sarcasm is dime-a-dosen. So sorry, but it's not that funny for me.

4) - the only genuinely funny bit of sarcasm, the one about "metaphor for adolescence" was swiftly undermined by a dead baby joke. Dead baby jokes ARE NOT TOO FUNNY - OR CLEVER, and i used to love ZP for cleverness.
WRONG: You remind me of a Roger Ebert saying what is art or not.
Art and humour are similar in that everyone has their own standards for them. If you laugh at dead baby jokes, then that's your problem.

Oh, and Croshaw is also a mysoginist, if that's gonna change anything. This is well-indicated by his "review" of Sims 3.
It seems like I made you somewhat upset with my comment. What I meant about the America being a "dick" is due to their jingoist philosophy and belief in their own exceptionalism (you can read more about it at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jingoism - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_exceptionalism.
I was not referring to Yahtzee's Cold War reference.

As for the humor, you and I seem to have very different standards. I personally believe anything is okay to mock, even if it is tasteless like misogynism, dead baby jokes, the holocaust.

OP pretty much mirrors my views on ZP now.

I just looked at the episode list to see the last one I watched and found the Bad Company 2 one. Since I own that game I decided to watch it and actually got bored mid video and closed it. Why? At least 5 censored penis appeared in the video and the humor was pretty dry.

It was mentioned before that Yahtzee's influence was Charlie Brooker who has the same kind of sarcastic attitude but is a LOT funnier because he puts a lot of thought into his comments and doesn't just stick to the dick jokes etc.

I'd much rather have someone review a game and be sarcastic about it's bad points

"So yeah... the white house... pretty big deal around here, apparently."

Well, I loved it.
I agree, it was pretty damn funny:

Yes, it's a shitty photo but I'm just trying to make a point.
