I think it's safe to declare the big two comic movie companies in rivalry to be Marvel and Fox

It's Spiderman when it comes to merchandise (or more accurately Batman is D.C.'s Spiderman in that regard), but Wolverine is the one Marvel slaps on to everything to increase sales.

Like how DC slapped on Batman in Justice League Dark even though Batman has nothing to do with Justice League Dark:

I'd argue that title goes to The Shadow [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shadow], since he predates Supes by 8 years, and he's basically the inspiration for Batman. Agreed on the other point, though - Batman is to DC what Wolverine was to Marvel: he's everywhere, to the point where the character just feels played out. Unless it's an Elseworlds comic, he's just not worth reading.

I think he means that at a certain point Marvel was shoving Wolverine into everything, much like DC often does with Batman. While it is true Spider-Man has had his fair share of comic cameos and team-ups, it wasn't to the extent Marvel once pushed Wolverine. In Spider-Man's case, I also feel it's more often done the other way around i.e. other characters cameo-ing in Spider-Man's books, not the webslinger in theirs.

Exactly. Have you seen the cover for Anita Blake: The Laughing Corpse?

If you look just beneath the "Mature Content" warning in the upper left corner, you'll see how retarded Marvel got with their Wolverine push at times.
It reads: "Wolverine does not appear in this issue".

Critically Fox rivals Marvel, but commercially its still slightly behind DC.

I imagine if Fox have a clear vision for where the take the X-Men franchise and can execute it well they'll eventually be the dark horse and actually be able to rival Marvel's blockbusters commercially. Hell, they might end up in second regardless if DC messes up badly enough.

If we're talking quality, I guess I see them as the two main rivals. I prefer the X-Men films to the MCU, but Fox also helms the Fantastic Four films so that kinda balances them out.
