I personally think they entered like a trance of so-so episodes for like 2-3 years back there before making a comeback with the Simpsons movie which i found very amusing.

In the words of shakespeare - dont talk balls. The Simpsons has went gradually downhill since series season 8, thats when the whole "the simpsons are going to africa/delaware/japan/britain started, it was also the time when they made homer stupid for the sake of it (all he says knowadays is "why you little!"). It was also around this time when Matt Groening signed off as show runner, ive heard hes coming back so hopefully thatll list the quality a bit. Ps i miss the classic john swarzwalder episodes and troy mcclure :(

Everyone says season 5 is about the limit, but I always liked stuff up to quite a bit later. Its only the last 5/6 years maybe that I haven't found as funny, but I don't watch them religiously.

To be honest, I never used to like the heartfelt stuff they used to try.

I don't watch Simpsons anymore. I used to love it, but it hasn't been that good for awhile. Family guy is better now.

Technically they did get funnier over the years. The Simpsons is like SNL, they many different eras of writers, and if you go watch the first two seasons, they are kind of unfunny. Homer used to say Frosty Chocolate Milkshakes every episodes
But the show made a major shift in season 3. First off, the writers realized that cartoons are capable of taking satire in a whole different level. Secondly, FOX decided to switch up staff, because the show was growing in popularity, FOX gave them better writers and producers.
Now here are Season 4 Simpsons
Even if you don't like that style of humor, you can't disagree, The Simpson during this season 4 - 11 period, had the most poignant writing. Primarily because The Simpsons, at that time, could tell a genuinely good story, and still make it funny. Watch "Who Shot Mr.Burns Part One" (it doesn't matter if you know the ending), if you see it again, you will find a concise story of community trying their best to combat a evil, and a man's descent into supervillain madness.

I can't say modern Simpsons is better than Season 4 - 11 Simpsons. It is better than season 1 and 2, but The great writers have moved on, most of the good ones went to Futurama, hence why both had such good subtle humor. The modern Simpsons doesn't seem so concerned in writing a great stories, rather than just making you laugh. Its still funny to me, but its like a Will Ferrel movie, funny but not engaging. Whereas Seasons 4-11, was like a Woody Allen movie, funny and subtle, but still capable writing a story that could make you think.

Now to end with one of my favorite Simpsons clips

Think that it most certainly did go into the crapper for a while, but as of late it seems like it is getting funny again. Sure it may not be the same type of humor but considering the audience they have to write for these days I'm not surprised. The average knuckle dragger isn't going to want to watch a tv show that is intelligent and witty because they won't understand it, and if they don't understand it they aren't going to watch and thus the show gets canceled.

It's still better than Family Guy.

God, your a complete idiot. And simply because you have an opinion that differs from mine I'm going to call you a troll and further berate you. Yeah, I'm just kidding and thankfully I'm not a complete douchebag so I'd never do that . . . but you best be careful with Simpsons fans, I think you'd get quite a few of them mad.

(P.S I was kind of scared to write down the first sentence in the first paragraph because it greatly goes against my personality.)

You can like whatever form of simpsons you want but I'm going to disagree with your statement on the jokes becoming more 'adult'. Let me put it this way - Family guys jokes are often intent towards topics that we try to generally shy away from wanting kids to know. But does that make it aimed at adults? No, because most of the jokes are incredibly immature and crude despite their subject matter. Back when I was younger I saw Family Guy the same way as I do now. meanwhile, (the old) Simpsons has actually evolved for me.

The simpsons jokes seem to work on different levels. If you watched the show as a kid and then as an adult you'll probably understand the jokes differently according to your age. And you know, if a single episode can hold up to entertain an adult and a child in a different way then the writers clearly deserve a show of hands.

I still love the show and I've watched it since Ullman. I keep hearing "Old Simpson's was better!!1!" from people, and I'm 90% sure that's nostalgia talking.

And I hate to break it to some people, but the Simpsons has never really been subtle.
I'm Sure for most people the simpsons has freuquent showings, perhaps over multiple channels. For me I got two episode on two channels at 6:00 and (now that I think about it) I spent almost every day watching the simpsons. The only thing is over here in Ireland, were about 5 series behind and still I notice that the show isn't as subtle, iconic or (most importantly) funny.

Nostalgia is usually when you watch or play something as a child and If you choose to go back it usually isn't what you remember it to be. But I watched some of the older series and they are without a doubt ten times funnier.

The movie was a disaster and the newer THOHs are just bad parodies of popular things.

They retired Troy Mcclure and Lionel Hutz because the voice actor was killed.

And there was nothing subtle about early simpsons jokes. They where just "safe" safe and child friendly jokes
Hmm yes, Mr Burns coming onto Homer was safe and child friendly. The adventures of Homer and Marge's sex life in Season 1 were child friendly. Episodes that dealt with marijuana abuse, drinking abuse, and homophobia were all child friendly. Two-parters about a baby shooting old men were certainly child friendly. Oh no wait, they were deeply layered and hilarious as hell to all audiences for different reasons.

How long have you been watching this show? (And when do you draw the line of "classic"? I say the show lost its touch around 1998)
I really have to go with "Andy of comix Inc" on the arguement he is having. The simpsons wasn't really "safe" when it was good, It was sharp and enjoyable. In newer series, they just seem to alienate people with family guy brand humour.
For my own amusement heres a list of things that they seem to shove into new episodes:
1. A new character we rarely hear from again.
2. An annoying montage with even more annoying music
3. Parodies of things which have already been parodied to death.
4. Swears
5. Every other episode they seem to travel to another country and make racist jokes.
6. Every episode were they don't travel abroad, Marge gets angry at homer, they threaten to get divorced and then they get together again.

I can feel the nostalgia wave... The Simpsons are still as funny than ever (if not funnier) in glorious High Definition. Sure the jokes have gotten more blunt but that's to cater for the ever-shortening American attention span!
What about the over seas audience?

i still like the simpsons. Its not something i watch religiously though. I simply watch an episode here and there and enjoy it. I could understand the people being sick of it if you were to try to watch every episode every time a new season was made hopin to see every one until you got sick of it.

I don't like when it gets overly political (as someone who is not American I couldn't care less about your political issues, especially when the Simpsons is giving commentary on them) But the jokes are still funny.

One of the problems I think is that the plots are less important, it used to be that about 90% of the jokes were directly related to the plot, leading to clever dialogue and hilarious characters, but now they have kinda copied family guys style of the jokes taking the form of several sketches, loosely drawn together by a theme, and while that works for Family Guy, I would prefer it if the Simpsons stuck to their format.

Finally the characters have received a lot more "Flanderisation" Moe is now some sort of bizarre deviant, where he used to be just an odd, emotionally repressed hardnut, and Chief Supernintendo Chalmers has this whole character thing now of hating Skinner, turning up in virutally every episode to berate him, and never do anything for the plot.

The improved animation in the later seasons certainly make it more bearable to watch though.
Actually, I'm glad for the improved animation for another reason: If I see it, I go "Oh crap, it's a new one. RUN FOR THE HILLS."

OT: Yeah, I'm not a fan of anything out of them from the last decade or more.
At all.

I used to love the Simpsons personally. In fact, I still like to watch the older episodes.

This is one of my favorite clips:

Although I do think the show has declined over the last decade. Of course considering that the show has been running for over 20 years, one would expect it to go stale.
