It's probably some sort of video game masochism, but I really enjoy when they try to divide the devoted and the casuals, just for the sense of awesomeness when you finally beat it.

Anyway the point for this post was to find some ideas on what to play next, I managed to beat arena 51 on god hand, all but chapter 7 on very hard in F Zero GX, IWBTG on hard mode, The endless setlist 2 on expert in rock band 2 and 7 day survivor in dead rising.

Something along those lines would be fun, but none of that japanese purple bullet spam stuff please.

Demon's Souls
Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep on Critical Mode
Bayonetta all the way including the bonus difficulty in which it takes away your witch time.

I dunno anything else really... Touhou?

Calumon: Digimon World. The final boss is really really hard... and you have to beat him twice!

As has already been stated, Demon's Souls. If you like old school dungeon crawlers with some modern design sensibilities, the Etrian Odyssey series on the DS is nice and challenging. Any of the Devil May Cry titles on higher difficulties are usually a good challenge, if I recall correctly.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Think of Fallout, now make ALL the guns absolute suckage, give ammunition weight, allow the player to only ever be able to carry 50 kilos of gear, add in a heap of mutants that are invisble, or come in packs of about 50 million or take 1000 machine gun rounds to kill, then add in a lot of randomly generated NPC's on various factions who will either shoot you and take all your ammo or save you from a bunch of zombies. (yes, zombies)

Damn fine game, Damn fine!

Fire Emblem games on their hardest difficulties. Use no recruitment guides, and no arena training. Do not reset upon unit death.

The real Mario 2 (aka the one that wasnt a palate swap of doki doki panic) was a pain in the arse,

mabie kaizo Mario or kusatare (sp?) mario (mario hacks)

battle toads (if you havent played this im surprised)
battle kid (from what i hear) (recently released snes game, that alone makes it awsome)
Dracula x (ok its not that hard, but hard all the same)
some of the other castlevania series on the nes.

ok this is total obvious here but the ninja gaiden series (one to 3 on the nes/snes)
Gabriel Knight 3 (witout a walkthrough)

i could go on but i think thats enough for now.

Zelda Parallel Worlds.

if we're talking about real games, Metal Gear Solid on extreme with no radar and game over if discovered.

To beat a dead horse, Demon's Souls. The game is old-school challenging without being frustrating.

I wonder, who hasn't played Battletoads? Played it all the time, one of the hardest NES games. I never was able to beat it.

The first Castlevania on the NES as well was hard. Never beat it either.

I would say games like these would be easy to beat now with emulator save states.

The whole reason games back then were so hard was because saving wasn't around. You just get a certain amount of lives and when they are gone, you are done, having to start all over again from the beginning.

The only games I could beat on the NES back then were: All the Mario Bros. games, Dr.Mario, Mega Man 2, Rescue Rangers, Tetris, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. I probably beat more, but I don't have my box of 30 some NES cartridges sitting next to me.

Prinny, Can I really be the Hero?

The game is like I wanna be the guy...but you are an exploding penguin and despite having 1000 lives, it will still bend you over and make you its *****. There is even a hard mode where if you take 1 hit (you get 3 on normal), you die.
