I want drug users, smokers, alcoholics to explain this to me (seriously)

I'm 26, I started smoking pot when I was 11, daily from when I was 16 and gave up cold turkey for about 2 years when I was 22, i now smoke occasionally, only in certain situations etc.

I'm a borderline alcoholic (I don't drink EVERY day but I have problems sticking to one drink when I do), first time I got drunk was when i was 12 but was raised with a glass of wine or beer over dinner from an early age

I have smoked regularly since the age of 15 or 16 (hardest thing to give up), in my experience people from my generation take it up as teenagers or not at all

I use hard drugs and have done since i was 18 (no injectables, no psychedelics (anymore)). Ecstasy (MDMA) and Speed mostly but am by no means an addict and never will be.

Now alot of this is a product of my upbringing, but explaining why to someone who has never tried these things (not condoning) I can only really give vague answers: I enjoy it, It relaxes me, It excites me etc... It's the same as attempting to explain the taste of chocolate to someone who has never tried it, its sweet, milky and can be bitter but in a good way etc...

I do however have issues with other harder drugs like speed and heroine. I don't want to damage my body and they burn you out over time. I am not saying however I don't think people should be allowed to use them, I think people should be allowed to do whatever they like to their bodies.
My "bad 3" of Meth, Heroin and Cocaine, I have no support for. I will openly say that you're taking a huge risk by doing them, and the risks far outweigh the benefits. I wouldn't want them to be kept illegal, but they should be very hard to get, perhaps requiring a doctor's note or something, and frequent checkups (or something like that.)
But for everything else, I have no issue with. Drinking and smoking are just ways for people to loosen up (in different ways;) and psychoactives are incredibly fun and eye-opening, with little negative side effects and almost no long term dangers.
I think you got the wrong drift from my words. Now I read them again I can see the error I made. I say "I have issues" as in I have a dislike for them, not as in addiction issues. At least that is the feeling I get from your words. I have only ever done psychedelics. Hell, even Lemmy of Motorhead fame refuses to do heroine and if he is wary of a substance... keep your eyes open.
Ah no, now we've got a convoluted chain of misunderstanding :p I was just backing up what you said. A majority of drugs are mostly harmless and quite fun to use, but those 3, and perhaps a couple others, definitely do deserve the bad name they've gotten.

I don't get smoking, since I don't know of any benefits. I do drink sometimes. Sometimes I drink to excess...I don't really know why. My surroundings tend to dictate it. I'm capable of having fun and relaxing without it, though. *shrug* I don't know. I'm human. I adapt to my surroundings.

Well isn't this a dandy chain of misunderstandings we have built up hehe. At least we are in the clear now. In summary... YAY PSYCHEDELICS.

is a load of crap, you run a bigger risk crossing the road.
That's an even bigger load of crap. Looking both ways reduces pretty much all of the risk. I don't mind people making the choice to do these things as long as they know and accept the risks, but I do mind people so stupid that they ignore or outright deny the risks exist.

I smoke a pipe because it's fucking badass, cliché but true and pipe tobacco tastes nice.
I... no. It isn't. I wish I had the relevant podcast from Spill.com where one of them admits to smoking a pipe in high school, and everyone proceeds to rip the piss out of him for 10 minutes, but I can't.

Just no.
Well here where I live it bloody well is!

If it makes you feel any better, I'm not a huge drinker either. I only ever resort to it when I'm stressed to the point of no return, and even then I'm drunk in 2 drinks.

Why do I smoke? Honestly, because I've been doing it since I was 15, and there's not been a time yet that was conductive to quitting.

I suppose if you don't consider "having a great fucking time" a good reason to enjoy a libation or two, then drugs and alcohol are just not for you.

In my opinion, it's all about who you're with and how you roll.

If your experience with drugs and alcohol so far has been observing dorks with ping pong balls and jobless losers with joints in their hands, then I can see why it wouldn't seem like a good time since these folks are mouth-breathing losers with slop for brains.

But, on the other hand, there are people like me that enjoy the occasional spliff on a sunny afternoon at the river or a beer or four during game night with my friends.

Ultimately though remember it's not the drugs and alcohol that ruin peoples lives, it's the people doing it that don't have enough good sense to either get help, change their habits, or grow a pair and find a hobby that's not bonging a beer in 15 seconds.
