I have recently played the free game, "Slender" and it really got me in the mood for a good creepy game. So if you could, please give me a suggestion or two and explain why! I usually like survival horror, but really any will do.... and before you suggest something like "Dead Space 2", let me just say that I want an actual scary game, not something that renders tons of blood and gore trying to use shock value to scare people. Thanks for sharing!

Resident Evil 2 is pretty fantastic, there's that Amnesia game for the PC. Fallout 3 can be frightening at times, especially in the dusty museums and sewers. Also, Bioshock scared the fuck out-a me; might be in the minority though.

Resident Evil 4? Though I suppose 9/10 people have already played it. The Regenerators are the scariest things ever.

Remember when you get a room full of them stuck in cryogenic storage? Then get the option to turn off the ice for some vague reason? Ya, fuck whatever that reward is they are staying frozen.

I think you get the thermal goggles for it, y'know, the most valuable thing you could have to beat them...

My tactic of using the radius of the shotgun to randomly guess worked out just fine though.

Also Amnesia because it's without a doubt the best horror game ever and while Dead Space 2 isn't a horror game exactly it's a very good survival game. Not survival-horror, just survival.

It's one of those games where you're on 1 HP scrambling for a health pack and/or ammo for half the game. I would say that Isacc doing all these badass things (like jumping from space, back into the atmosphere and landing at super high speed into a little room through some vents without breaking his legs. Master Chief style) hurts the horror aspect of it even more.

Come on how can you have a truly badass protagonist in a horror game? Resi 4 might have managed it but I think that's about it.

Bioware? You mean Bioshock? Lol, I get those two confused as well.

Which is the 8th word in the OP.

OT: Amnesia is THE scary game. It's on Steam and in the Humble Indie Bundle 5 - take your pick. Let's have a brief recap - for starters you are helpless - you are armed with just a light. Oh and it attracts monsters. However, fumbling in the dark makes your character more insane.

Alone in the Dark if you can stomach the games being older, it's quite good.

Silent Hill series - well a staple of horror games.

Call of Cthulhu®: Dark Corners of the Earth - OK, I haven't tried it but I've heard it's quite good.

Amnesia of course, but you've probably already played it. Might want to check out Penumbra (previous project of the same people). Heard good things about System Shock, too (although that's a rather old game).
I would love to play System Shock! Especially the second one, but they are so hard to find, I guess i will have to dish out 50 or 60 bucks for one on ebay... and yes I have played Amnesia it was a very good one and I cannot wait for the second to come out!

Penumbra series is amazing, 1 and 2 are creepy as shit. There's an add on to 2, but there are no monsters so it's hit or miss with the puzzles. The collector pack on steam is only 20 bucks ;)

Lone Survivor is scary too, if you can ignore the pixelated-ness. I love Lone Survivor, it's very well designed and definitely a good horror game.

As for Dead Space... I think they nailed the atmosphere. Some parts are scary, but it is (intentionally) action oriented, and that's not a bad thing. I couldn't tell if you had already played it or not, so I just wanted to point out, it does have it's moments in terms of horror.

If you own Half-Life 2, then the mod "Nightmare House 2" is great. You only need the second one, because the original one was just a map and it wasn't well made. 2 contains the original map, but remade, so it's a win-win, plus it's free.

The "Cry of Fear" mod for Half-Life 1 also looked scary but I've never played it. I've watched an LP of it though, and it scared me just watching it, so try that :p

If you are looking for more free games I'd suggest the SCP series. They're short, but ridiculously scary. Play them with all the lights off and noise-canceling headphones, and you're going to potentionally piss yourself. There have been multiple SCPs so just google it.

I love the Cthulhu mythos! Is it for PC? And I have heard a lot of good things about the first three silent hill games, I guess I really need to check those out! Thank you.

I would recommend SCP Containment Breach, it's pretty good which made me jump a few times, watch out for out one particular enemy though, SCP 173, it's like the Weeping Angels from Doctor Who, you have to keep watching it as it moves very fast, but the game also has the feature of blinking in the game to make it harder, so be careful or it will snap your neck

Yes, it's on Steam even. Quite cheap - £6, or $10 in money you'd understand.

me, too. I have yet to acquire and play them, though.

Personally, I can recommend the Alan Wake games. They are very good games in my opinion, but I'm not exactly sure if they qualify as "horror games". Don't get me wrong, they are pretty much based on horror / supernatural elements, but it's definitely not as scary as Amnesia or similar titles.

I've heard they are meant to be essentially Steven King novels as a game, maybe that helps.

I don't know if you've tried it already, but Metro 2033 was pretty scary for a while (mostly intense, so I couldn't focus on the horror to resolve it, and that ended up making it scarier than it should have been for me.) Also as others have said before: Alan Wake is a pretty good one.

You might think it's stupid right now, but that thing will haunt your nightmares forever once you have actually played the game.

SCP-containment Breach is a different breed than Amnesia. Whereas Amnesia is the tension-filled kind of scary, SCP-CB is the ADRENALINE MODE kind of scary. In SCP you are constantly on your toes as NOWHERE is safe. If something finds you, you DIE, and it's not a question of 'if' they're going to find you, but 'when'.
