I was thinking of enlisting into the Canadian Armed Forces when I'm done with high school. Think it's a good idea? What do you guys know about the military? Any of you in it? I'm not sure which branch I want to join, but I want to be in the reserves.

Might be helpful if you say what you're good at that is military related, or useably in military.

I want to take sniper training (and no I'm not a 12 year old CoD player, I was into snipers since I was 5) just in case my country needs me and I'm the only one qualified for the job or something. You should too, its ideal, no interaction with people, just you the scope and the gun.

Its a lot harder than that but still its better than being the minuteman.

Edit: Please stop quoting me telling me more about snipers I'm not going to write the encyclopedia entry for sniper here its just a metaphor and what I like about it, I know what I'm talking about. Again, not a Cod 12 year old.

If you've thought about it and it's what you want to do, yes with a proviso.

Go into officer or professional training, don't join the military to be a grunt as you stand a high chance of being unemployable once you leave.

Other than that I don't know much, a few of my mates went into it, one's flying helicopters in Afghanistan right now, another's not 'in' the military anymore as he's building Eurofighter engines and another's on some ship in the Royal Navy. They all love it but they all went in to do things other than be a foot soldier, they'll all have profesions when they leave.

Good for you! Just a word of advice: if anyone talks to you about a "Weapon X" project, just politely refuse. Trust me, Adamantium bonding hurts like a mother.

Go for it if it's what you want i mean our opinions dont really matter at the end of the day it's your life.

Plus you know if twenty years from now your behind a barrier dodging bullets in the rain you cant scream "Damn you escapists for letting me do this!"

I recommend talking to all the branch recriuters, this way you can find out what job fits you best. But, my main recomendation is to talk to a regular military solider before you sign a contract to see if the military is right for you.

I do not know if its true in Canada but here in the states recriuters are not the most trustworthy when it comes to certin facts. For instance don't believe them if they say 'that job is not available' or 'that job is full' their job is to get people to join so they can find that specific specialty. Also it helps to take a friend, thats in the military already, with you so the recriuter does not try to pull any tricks.

Im in the US Army and I love my job. Im even trying to go full-time. Also the pay is steady and (in America) its difficult to be kicked out unintentnelly (unless you commit a felany or serious misdimenor then its easy).

(Peace and long life)

As a fellow Canadian, who is in Grade 12, let me say.

No! Nonononononononononono. You will become cannon fodder if you sign up after High school.

I know a friend who joined the cadets, and technically, he outranks a lot of the people who are fighting in Afghanistan.

Plus tons of the soldiers who die there, die because of Car bombs.

Not really something a hospital can fix.

If you see the army guys in your high school go talk to them. They will pay you 3000 dollars or so to do basic training over your summer break so you can be part of the reserves. That is what this guy I know did, he was a reserve field engineer before he left high school.

I have a lot of respect for anyone who risks their life to help others. I just hope that if you ever wind up getting mobilized somewhere, that it is for something you beleive is worth fighting for. Some people I know had trouble with the past few years and things they didn't agree with.

Go for it. You'll soon find out if it's not for you. Just try an get through the training etc. and if you feel motivated to do finish, it's probably the right thing to do. If not, maybe the army isn't for you. Besides, there are hundreds of non-combat jobs in the military that can be compared to almost any civvy job. You don't have to be a front line soldier.

Armed forces is a respectable career (if you want to make career out of it that is) so just do it :D It's what I'm planning on doing in 2 years time anyways, if they want me :p

we are in afghanistan right now, and we've lost just over 130 soldiers and god knows how many wounded since our involvement, so you shut the fuck up.

on topic, subsidized education through the armed forces means they pay for tuition and supplies, and you are paid regular service wages the entire time of your education. but be warned, for every month of subsidized education, there is 2 months of required regular service, where you can be deployed to troubled spots. but if this is what you want to do, by all means go ahead. i'm planning on my ROTP through the combat engineers in EME (electrical and mechanical engineering), but it sounds like your thing is more with the infantry or, if you work at it, the rangers. maybe a career in CANSOFCOM if you can make it.

Ummm, Canada's in Afghanistan fighting against the Taliban, we've lost a number of soldiers since our involvement started after 9/11.

So I REALLY hope that was a joke.

If Canada has an ROTC office talk to them. Enlisting recruiters tend to fuck you over (atleast state side they do)

Do college first then go into the armed service. You can also set that up to start, where you got to college for the armed services.
