Yeah, you need to calm the hell down.
It's probable that the ":p" indicated he was being a mite bit facetious.
im tired of everyone shitting on the canadian military, like we are all dumbasses who can't find their asses with their hands. to say that we haven't done anything in the past while (militarily) is akin to that dickhead who took a piss on our war memorial some time back.

four generations of my family have been in the armed forces, and here this guy is saying we're good for nothing.

so, you shouldn't joke about these things. period. in case SOMEONE gets offended (much like myself)

I want to take sniper training (and no I'm not a 12 year old CoD player, I was into snipers since I was 5) just in case my country needs me and I'm the only one qualified for the job or something. You should too, its ideal, no interaction with people, just you the scope and the gun.

Its a lot harder than that but still its better than being the minuteman.
You the scope the gun the spotter the wind correction etc etc.

So?
Why don't you try getting over it?

People make fun of my country all the fucking time.
What's worse?
They automatically assume things about me because I live there.
OHO YES I SURE DO LOVE SOME WAR AND JESUS AND PIE AND I'M HUGELY FAT
Hey, I have a better idea.
Why don't you submit to my will so I can order you to drown yourself in a river of the blood of your loved ones?
I like it.
I think I'll call it "Operation: Fuck You."

So yeah, one could say I'm not particularly sympathetic to your plight, because I have had to deal with that shit every time I have ever made any mention of where I happen to live, regardless of whether or not I enjoy living here (hint: I do not.)

(And in case you're confused, I wasn't directing the "why don't you fuck off" speech at yourself, I was directing it at all of the people who won't shut the fuck up, as if I care what they think of a country I don't even care about (hint: I do not, but it's still ignorance of the highest caliber.))

Oh, and there is nothing off-limits when it comes to jokes.
i guess you are right, but it still bugs the fuck out of me.

and yes, there are boundaries when it comes to jokes (the really terrible ones where you have to say "aw, cmon man")

If you feel you want to, but yea ask someone who is or has been in the military, and you feel okay to like, risk your life and all that jazz.

hmmm Oh really then?
Go to a Holocaust memorial and grab the microphone and say...
In WW2, if a German asks if you want a shower, NEVER SAY YES! *Dah dum tish*
And start laughing and saying "Silly Jews..."
There ARE jokes that are off limits.

Not knowing those boundaries, is a very sad thing indeed.

Isn't Canada a capitalist nation? I know its more left than America, but so is just about everyone these days.

If its a socialist nation and I'm just ignorant about it, then go ahead and join.

If its a capitalist nation, I don't see why a good commie like yourself would join.

Snipers have the best and worst job.

They rarely get into "Combat" but then they get to wait hours upon hours waiting for a target.

Yep, but there's something I enjoy about instilling fear into others, the posiblity of a sniper somewhere, yet they can't do anything about it.

(You'd think dealing with the bullshit you're having to deal with would make me more sympathetic, but then you probably don't know me very well so your odd misjudgement can be excused.)
To defend his point, the Canadian military historically has some of the best-trained and for lack of a better word ferocious soldiers in the world. However, our government still arms us with WW2 rifles.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee-Enfield#The_Lee-Enfield_in_military.2Fpolice_use_today

"The Lee-Enfield family of rifles is the oldest bolt-action rifle design still in official service;[7] Lee-Enfield rifles are used by reserve forces and police forces in many Commonwealth countries, particularly Canada, where they are the main rifle issued to the Canadian Rangers, "

Still, even I know when to laugh at a joke. =/

Canada is capitalist, but in the event of invasion I want to protect the people I care about.

Definitely get a college degree first and go to OSC (Officer Candidate School). You don't want to be a grunt when the shit hits the fan.

I'm not in it but a good friend of mine is in the Canadian army. He is in the light infantry. i can't remember the exact regiment. I want to say Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry but I'm not sure. If you feel strongly that you should serve your country you should join. A word of caution though. My friend who is in the army was in Afghanastan a few years ago and his hummer got hit by an IED, he was the only survivor. Just keep in mind that war is dangerous and you only get one life.

P.S.
My friend who is in the Army is very proud that he is serving his country and he loves the army. His personality fits the army just right. He was a trouble maker in High school, (set a field on fire, kicked in the school vending machines, etc.) and now he is a very well respected gentleman.

People... The (Now bold) emoticon is a rather clear indication that the man is joking. Let's not get our panties in a bunch over it.

Moving on, It is your life. I've never been to/lived in Canada, but I would assume it looks good on your resume.
