Ahem, being the sucker for romances and slice of life anime that I am, I would recommend Clannad, Kanon (2006), and Bakuman. But my own number 1 favorite anime ever created is rather new, called Bakemonogatari (I know a real tongue curler) which might not be the best anime for a newcomer, I HIGHLY recommend to watch this in the near future.
As for your kung fu preference I'd say Histories Strongest Disciple Kenichi, Darker than Black, Katanagatari or any of the bigger ongoing anime like Naruto.
Comedy is also one of 'em things that I like and the greatest comedy in anime history is IMO Gintama. Other really good ones are Great Teacher Onizuka, Seitokai Yakuindomo and Working!!
I don't know what exact genre these two blong to, but they are great: Durarara! and Baccano! If you decide to watch 'em, watch Baccano! first as there are some references in Durarara!
If you like plot twists, Check out School Days.... >.>
For more details about these series you can always google 'em and the same goes for where to watch them. I tip my hat and say Have Fun Watchin' ^^
