I've been thinking about getting into Doctor Who, can anyone tell me where to start?(other than series 1, episode 1)

I've been thinking about starting with The Fifth Doctor, Peter Davison, 1982-1984.

Basically, all I want to know is which Doctor was the most awesome, and which series has the least amount of suck. I say that because I've heard that the current series of Doctor Who has had some REALLY bad episodes. Give me your best of the best, CONVERT ME!

Well, you could start with Ecclestion. As a doctor, he is a good play to start. He isn't the best ever, but he isn't the worst either. Or Jon Pertwee/Tom Baker. Both served as my introduction to Doctor Who (thank you public television!). They were the original ones that got my hooked. I still consider the old series from that age to be the "real" Doctor Who, but that is apparently just me, since everyone concentrates on this new-fangled Doctor. Why do I feel so old at 18?

Well, thats tough to say. Personally I'd go with Tom Baker as the doctor.

I would definately start on the "current" series from eccleston onwards, then give some of the older ones a go.

Start with the 2005 series onwards (Eccleston) and then go back later and watch some of the classics. As the '05 series was a reboot, it introduces the premise / important things well for those who have yet to see them.

Start with the revived series and make sure you start on a Tennant season (those are 2, 3, and 4 respectively) I say Tennant because personally I'm not an Eccleston fan, mostly because I started watching at the end of season 4. If you start on Tennant's first season you might run into trouble with background since that's Rose's second season. If you want to start on a fresh TARDIS companion start on season 3 with Martha Jones.

While I'd like to reccommend starting on one of the older original seasons I can't simply because they haven't aged very well and might be a bit off putting in terms of production quality to new comers.

Start on a revived season and get familiar with the series before you start diving into the older stuff.

Modern doctor who is entierly different to the old doctor who which ended in the '89 (whith the exception of the '96 film). I would recomend starting with the first series of modern doctor who with christopher christopher eccleston and bille piper and then you have 6 great series to eat up you're time

I don't mind old and campy though. I have all of the original "Avengers" DVD. Diana Rigg ftw!

It looks like in just a few minutes, the 2005 reboot is winning.

Your in good hands to start with Eccelston ... although Tennant is definately my favorite. Storyline continuity will force ya back to Eccelston. You've had good recommendations so far.

I'd recommend Tom Baker. The new series is an in name only reboot, relying too heavily on the nostalgia factor, random special effects for the ADHD generation, and soap opera unrequited love wangst.

If you can get hold of Genesis of the Daleks, I'd recommend you start with that. You don't need to know much about the previous stories at all to get it, and it's one of the best Doctor Who stories ever.

(Also, a fairly decent list here: http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/teamt/nash/specials/31100-doctor-who-classic-best-classic-episodes )

Yea, Nash is where I saw the WORST Doctor Who episodes too. That one with the girls DNA ending up on a plate of cement, leading to a bad philatio joke.

2005 onwards. i tried watching some earlier episodes from like the 60s and 70 and 80s and they werent all that great. story wise it just felt wrong and the characters just made me want them to be killed off. glad that Adric kid died. he was the worse of the worse.

maybe watch the best episodes of the old series. i think you can go to tv.com and get a list of top episodes.
