I'll be different and say Persona 4. I just got into it and it is amazing.
demons and spirits count as fantasy, right?

Hard to find but if you do The World Ends With You, another hard find is Shining Force EXA.

I'm going to go ahead and say Demon's Souls for the PS3. In terms of conversation choices there is none so if you like that part then this isn't for you but it's still incredibly fun although it is challenging. Truthfully though I beat most of it with little to no problems except for the swamp world AKA the worst map ever save spawning them into an active volcano. It is has a bit of a dark tone with it and has minor horror elements but not that much. It's in the greatest hits category so it is only 30$ and I would recommend it to anyone who owns a PS3 but if you don't have one then this whole thing was pointless.

Well, the major mainstream ones have been mentioned.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.

It's a terrific game, however there are some imperfect design. If you're able to get past Morrowind's slightly lacking combat system and ten year-old graphics you're in for a treat. It's got a great story and vivid atmosphere.

Plus, the GOTY version is pretty cheap on Steam.

Knights of the Old Republic, along with basically anything by Bioware. I've heard The Witcher is great, but I can't ever get it to work on my PC. Both KOTOR games are great though, and have more action than typical RPG's, so they're a good segue to the wider genre. It's been said a lot, but Dragon Age is fantastic as well, but I'd suggest putting difficulty on easy for your first run through. That game is punishingly hard to the uninitiated. Are you after more story driven games, character games, or do you like the RPG gameplay? Knowing this would allow for more specific recommendations. If you're more into action, I'd stay away from JRPG's, they're more about visuals and don't have nearly as much RP or character building as western RPG's. That's been my experience at least.

FANTASY RPG TRANSLATOR:

MASS EFFECT = DRAGON AGE

FALLOUT 3 = OBLIVION/ELDER SCROLLS

Any questions?
Just because Mass Effect and Dragon Age were both made by Bioware does not make them the same. Dragon Age is a much more tactical game.

OT: I recommend Oblivion, Dragon Age, Torchlight, and Morrowind.

Sorry, they actually don't make those anymore. I'm not even being sarcastic.

Go play FF12 with all the automation turned off.

I would have to say Final Fantasy VI, it's the only real fantasy RPG that I've played, though, so I'm not much of an authority on the subject.
Plus, its perfect if you want some good ol' SNES Nostalgia Trippin

I've got suggestions.

Baldur's Gate
Planescape Torment
Arcanum
Dragon Age

As with most RPGs, a synopsis wouldn't do them credit. Mash those names into wiki and see if any sound interesting. Baldur's Gate and Planescape Torment in particular are considered some of the pinnacles of RPG achievement. The good thing is, the first 3 I listed are incredo-cheap, so you can pick them up with almost no financial hardship to yourself.
the elder rpg games are the best!

don't forget
Icewind Dale 1 & 2,
Dungeon Siege 1 & 2,
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines,
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind,
Fable: The Lost Chapters,
Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2,
Gothic 2 & 3 (maybe Risen but i didn't seem very good),
Jade Empire,
Arx Fatalis,
Freelancer (Awesome mods singleplayer/multi for this game)
Nox,
The Bard's Tale (lol)
Mount & Blade or Mount & Blade:Warband (has multiplayer among other things)
The Fall: Last days of Gaia,
Stalker games,
Drakensang games,

Spellforce, Beyond Divinity, and Temple of elemental evil or something like that
( maybe )

...

mass effect and fallout? then I suggest dragon age and oblivion. made by the same people, respectively. Can't go wrong.

All great games Soph, but, if you have a look at the initial post, he's played ME 2 which is barely an rpg, and fallout 3, which is a first person shooter with moderate rpg elements.

I hardly think that's fair. People discover new genres all the time - sure singleplayer fantasy RPGs might not be the genre he expects (though oblivion is pretty close to fallout 3) but if asked to recommend some good ones, I'll certainly oblige.

And I'd disagree that Fallout 3 is not very RPG. I can't see any way in which it differs beyond being first person. You have stats, and these stats augment your character, you have dialogue with lots of options and choices and ways to act and multiple ways of solving situations, a big world map, involved inventory management, skills to apply when appropriate - yes, you can point a gun at things and shoot them - but unless you've got a decent and relevant gun skill you're going to miss most of the time.
Quite the argument and I agree wholeheartedly. Just because the RPG was done up with FPS flavors it doesn't undermined the fact that its core was about the individual, the skills and make up of that character, and how they chose to interact with a grand world supplied to them.

If Fallout was an FPS with only moderate RPG elements, then Oblivion was an FPMagic with only moderate RPG elements as well. I don't think anyone wants to make that argument.
