I'm going to save us a lot of time... roll a pair of dice (regular d6 dice if you need to ask). Play Final Fantasy (that number).

Kind of a side note, but I find it a bit depressing how much of a stranglehold the traditional fantasy setting has on Western RPGs. The retro-futurism of Fallout seems like such an obvious choice in hindsight, as is Steampunk, or a Bond-esque espionage game. Pretty much any period we romanticize that has a good visual hook would be a good choice.
I want swords, guns, grenades, explosive RC cars, super-powers, magic, etc. Maybe not in the same game, but just seeing a world I haven't seen a million times before would be great. Of all the fantasy RPG of note, Fables is about the only one that intrigues me... and only because it sounds like it channels folklore more than Tolkien or King Arthur.

in dragon age there is much slower tactical based commbat instead of 3rd person action and there is no moral system just how your team thinks of you
in oblivion a lot more enemies use swords axes maces ect not just the poor ones,also you have sheilds and enchantments and stuff
honestly i think oblivion is the best esspecialy for PC,mind you if your like me your pc can hardly run the damn game BUT if you set it all to low low graphics the game is still so emersive you wont notice,and the mods are awsome (heck they range form houses to weapons to quest to full out diffrent games seriously its very impressive what people can do with the editing tools)one of my favorites was this thing called personal dungion cause i could trap people and make them fight lions or rats or a zombie or eachouther and then make them dance to numanuma! ah that was fun

Class turn based strategy/rpg. Though it is certainly antiquated by todays standards, I'm sure it'll give the most hardcore rpg fan a run for his money.

If you don't mind dated graphics, try two of the best Fantasy RPG's of all time with Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III (VI) on the SNES/PS1/Emulator. A few more really good but slightly dated titles are Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2 and Palnescape: Torment.
It's... REALLY hard to find decent fantasy RPG's these days. Dragon Age is very well done, and it's another BioWare game like Mass Effect so it won't be too unfamiliar for you. Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Planescape: Torment and Neverwinter Nights are also old BioWare titles and availble for cheap from GoodOldGames.com
Oblivion, Torchlight, Diablo 2, Morrowwind, The Witcher, and FF X are also solid Fantasy or Psuedo-Fantasy RPG's. Though technically Torchlight and Diablo 2 are more "action hack and slash" than real RPG's.
Bah I went through all the trouble of creating an account just to suggest Diablo and Diablo 2, just to find someone beat me to it by one post (at the time of typing that sentence). Ah well it could be nostalgia talking but Diablo is where it's at, even number one. I just went back and finished it again earlier this year and loved every second of it.
You MIGHT like Dragon Quest IX as well. Especially all the customization you can do with your character and party in terms of skills/classes. The fact that you can also see the enemies in the area (no random battles) to pick and choose which monsters you wish to fight is also a plus.
Then you want Morrowind. It takes place in a highly unique nd original fantasy world. Yes it has wood, high and dark elves, but the world, history and lore are totally unique, with very unique landscape. You'll like it.Netrigan said:
